Rumor: Star Wars Battlefront: Online in the works

The development of Star Wars Battlefront III has been rocky, to say the least. Work began at Free Radical before Crytek snapped up the company, then the game was rumored to be in Rebellion's care before it eventually dropped from the face of the earth. Meanwhile Pandemic, the recently shuttered studio behind the first two games, apparently had nothing to do with the title at all.

The latest rumor, courtesy of Kotaku, puts development of a brand new Battlefront project, entitled Star Wars Battlefront: Online, in the hands of Slant Six Games and LucasArts. Slant Six is the studio behind several games in the SOCOM tactical-shooter series, making it a reasonable candidate for a Battlefront developer. The game will reportedly arrive in 2011 on PS3 and Xbox 360. It will focus on online play and, presumably, Star Wars. According to Kotaku, Star Wars Battlefront: Online is also the source of the Star Wars Battlefront III casting rumors that popped up last December.

This is bittersweet. Don't know if I'd rather have a bad Battlefront come out for the PS3/360 then have not have one at all. A little part of me is glad that this bit is a rumor, because if we are going to get a new Battlefront, it HAS to be amazing.

I'd rather not have a bad one made at all. If they make a bad one now, they wont make another one for like 3 or 4 years and then what are we all going to do. Play with our iPad?

SW BF 3 shouldn't be this difficult!

take the maps from battlefield 1 & 2, make high res textures and up the player max by 8-16. Sure, not super innovative BUT THIS IS STARWARS fa chris'sake?!? (there isn't much 'new' material to work with not already seen in the previous two games)

i would prefer maps where you can go from the ground, to the sky, to space, all without loading or anything. the rumors said that BF3 would have that, and if so, that would be amazing.

I want at least 64 players on each team!! And have it so that you can take off from land battle in a fighter and go up and land on the enemies ships!! Oh and eh what else.............NOT HAVE IT MADE BY SLANT 6!

This actually makes a lot more sense than some other titles I could mention. Battlefront always felt like an online only game that somehow managed to slip in a SP/MP experience with none of the benefits. Still, it's been so long they're going to have to make a lot of changes to compete. Star wars only gets you so far. This series needs a Reboot and then a major face lift.

WHAT?! What about the PC? What the hell? I LOVE playing SWBF2 on PC, I still play it online today(as do a few dozen others in the 2 or 3 busy servers). I hope that statement doesn't imply exclusivity to 360 and PS3, but just 2 of the platforms it'll be on in addition to PC. I'd really hate to miss out on the next non-handheld SWBF game.

It's about time!!!!! Battlefront has been sad on psp, it needs a next gen reboot. I loved the 2nd game and want to see it improved upon, especially with network play being what it is on console now.

I just hope the Mandolorian get their own faction :-)

renegade squadron was great (as in the online, single player was mediocre). the new one is meh all over.

online focus... so, i'm guessing no couch co-op in this one? A shame.

Just....eh. 2 things very wrong here - 1, the game basically is an online game anyway...SWBF1 & 2 were only really fun when playing against other players. The singleplayer campaigns were only chances to get to know the maps.

Secondly, online only probably = no modding. There's been a huge community creating custom levels, worlds, even patches with new classes. They'd have to go - and on top of that, no PC? This series has lived (and on a smaller scale, still does) on the PC.

Saying all that, it's just rumour at this point. And Battlefront has been nothing but rumour since 2007.
