We've been wondering why it's taken Square Enix so long to churn out another installment in the core Final Fantasy franchise, seeing as how the last game came out approximately forever ago. The answer recently came in the latest Dutch issue of Official PlayStation Magazine, which contains a revealing interview with Squeenix's Yoshinori Kitase. According to a fan translation of the interview, Kitase said "Final Fantasy XIII was originally meant to be a PS2 title, but we had to switch systems due to the arrival of the PS3. That cost us about one and a half years and was constantly a case of trial and error."
Considering it took Square Enix roughly "one and a half years" to develop and release Final Fantasy IX, that's a pretty substantial amount of time lost. Hopefully the developer will have an easier time when working on the next current-gen Fantasy.

FF13's graphics are not "failure". They don't look bad at all. That being said, I don't think it's anywhere near the best looking games I've seen this gen, but they're far from "failure"

DS and PSP really is their bread-and-butter in Japan at this point. The really hardcore JRPGs are on the consoles, of course, but they also all have DSes or PSPs.
In the West, the hardcore JRPG fans are still on the consoles, but it's a diminishing market in the West anyway.

@BigFat
I've played the game and the graphics are amazing. They're far from average but like most things graphics are wholly subjective. The world they crafted in this game is one of the most beautiful worlds I've seen. You said the graphics were a letdown and described them as "failure" ... LOL

You are basically saying that the real time graphics aren't as good as a CG trailer and that means the graphics are terrible? Are you really that naive or is this just some console warrior crusade?

Protip: CG graphics are pre-rendered. They can look as good or as bad as the company wants them to. If I remember right, weren't they saying the in-game graphics would look as good as current CG graphics? If so, that's not much of a stretch. Most current gen games look better than the CG cutscenes released during the PS1/2 era.
Calling any part of the game a failure based solely on low-quality youtube videos when you don't even like that genre in the first place is pretty idiotic and asinine.

Bigfat, just stop. Seriously. Watching a low-quality YouTube video is not the way to determine graphical quality.
Using the Cell isn't just referring to graphical quality, seeing as the Cell and the RSX are two distinct things.
Once the game launches, (not that you'll be able to tell, as you'll play the inferior 360 version) the graphics will look great.

Actually developers are using the cell in tandem with the RSX to create better graphics than just using the RSX by itself. So, having the cell does mean better graphics. This is usually only realized and utilized on exclusive games.
The graphics are beautiful. Not good, great, ok, average ... but exceptional.
You're just being a jerk because you don't like final fantasy or the PS3. In fact, you are the only person I've seen complain about the graphics. We all know why that is.

It sounds to me that you are just bitter at its success. Big deal, people like a franchise you don't. Get over it. What exactly does it need to evolve to? Its such a cliche argument that doesn't hold any weight. If you want a tactical shooter rpg then Final Fantasy isn't made for you. No reason to waste time being bitter because millions of other people are excited about a game you don't like.

Actually I do remember way back when those cg trailers were given as an example of how ffXIII would look in real time, so Bigfat does have a solid point, even if it's made in a way that could sound fanboyish, depending how you're interpreting it.

It's out in Japan so if he's played an import version or has a Japanese PSN account and has downloaded the demo, then yeah he's played it.
Just because you don't have an import version or downloaded the demo on the Japanese PSN doens't mean everyone else has? Got it? Great. So yes, its entirely possible that he's played the Japaense version and can make some judgements about the gameplay.
I'm personally waiting till the us english version comes out and hope the guy above is deadddd-wrong!

Maybe johnny's in 2004, because he seemingly forgot about this thing called youtube, or gametrailers. I just pulled up a bunch of ff13 videos in seconds, and you certainly don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out it's not much different than any other jrpg gameplay wise.

Really? If that's true then it's an egregious error on Square's part. They know how long they take to churn out a Final Fantasy game and if they expected to put out another one on PS2 after XII before the PS3 came out then, well, that's just idiotic.

Most RPG develoeprs were content to stay with the PS2 because they werent sure which next gen system to follow, or if they even needed to follow one of them, because there's like 250 million PS2s in circulation. To abandon a user base like that for one that barely had 3 million in the first year would be madness unless you truely had a game that couldnt be done on that generation of hardware.
If the original game was intended for the PS2 then it would have been a very different game than what they're putting out now.

If they were playing the wait and see game then they failed since everyone laughed off the PS3 at first.
Also, the PS2 had around 140-150m last year, so probably around 120-130m when the PS3 released.

You can't feel gameplay or combat by watching a video. I've actually played the import version of the game and it feels really good. Haven't played the entire game but enough to get a good enough feel for it and it's fantastic. I'm about to borrow it from my friend (loaning him Darksiders) and try to beat it even though I won't be able to understand the dialogue between characters.

The battle system has changed and is most certainly different. If you'd of played the game you'd of known that. It's just such an ignorant string of comments about everything relating to the game. They aren't going to get rid of the battle system just like Halo isn't going to get rid of shooting in the first person. But, its certainly changed and evolved and it will continue to do so into the future. If you like that type of game then great and if you don't then you have plenty of other options available to you ... I hear Mass Effect 2 is great so maybe thats more appealing to you since its more of a tactical 3rd person shooter that lets you craft your own character and story. If you want an open world JRPG, that has online co-op and uses real time combat then maybe you should look into White Knight Chronicles which releases on Tuesday. Accept the game for what it is and if you like it then thats great and if not then maybe skip it all together. It'd be like criticizing a FPS for having a gun and a first person mode.

Your beef with FF has everything to do with it being a JRPG.
Seriously, what is it with JRPG haters and WRPG fanboys popping out of the woodwork lately? Can't we just enjoy them both? Dragon Quest IV and Ultima VII in '92, Final Fantasy VII and Fallout in '97, Chrono Cross and Baldur's Gate II in 2000, Dark Cloud 2 and Knights of the Old Republic in 2003, Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy XIII in 2010...

I think it stems fron this:
http://kotaku.com/5430803/bioware-on-the-decline-of-the-jrpg
"The fall of the JRPG in large part is due to a lack of evolution, a lack of progression," BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk told Destructoid last week.
People repeat that talking point almost verbatim since Zeschuk made the statement on that fateful day. Since then we've had this sort of new breed of Western RPG fanboys who have to trash and rail on everything not made (RPG wise) by a Western developer. I don't agree with the notion that all JRPGs are the same, either. You've got turn based, real time, strategy and hybrids of everything in between. What western RPG developers have been able to do is sort of combine action and shooting genres with the rpg genre.
White Knight Chronicles is going to push the genre as a whole forward, I think. You've got the epic single player campaign, real time combat, character customization and the end-all-be-all of online modes that features 4 player co-op and the creation of a virtual town to farm and sell goods to other players. I'm interested to see how it's supported.

I'm calling SHENANIGANS on this....
I remember an article months ago saying that FF13 was nearly done & this was the same time that it was announced for the 360. So NOW they're saying the delay is because of PS3 development? BULL!!
I guess they had to take out enough content to form an additional game b/c of PS2 development also.....

I'm still just really bummed out with all the negative reports about FF13 via Japanese fandom. Sure, I need to find out these things for myself, but when the first ps3 FF game for years gets released after all these years and people are complaining about the story being boring, a lack of towns to explore, and an overly linear experience when compared to past FFs.. well, it just really dampens my enthusiasm for the game.
I don't think anything could stop me from getting the game, but still, I really hoped to hear better word of mouth about it than I have.
