We love Nobuo Uematsu's work on the musical accompaniment for the Final Fantasy franchise, but we often find ourselves wishing those games' scores were infused with a touch of Jay-Z. Maybe a light smattering of Outkast. The faintest hint of Ghostface Killah.
The mixologists from Team Teamwork (creators of the similarly-spliced Ocarina of Rhyme album) have once again worked their magic on a classic video game soundtrack. This time around, it's the score from Final Fantasy VII, which has been mashed together with tracks from over a dozen hip-hop artists, as well as Tom Waits, which is just weird. You can pay whatever you want to download the cleverly-titled Vinyl Fantasy 7 -- though we're betting you'll probably settle on zero dollars.
[Thanks, Mike!]

This one is put together better than the Ocarina of Time album, but its still not done very well.
@extinction: Yes, I'll bet your tastes are really obscure and underground (not that I care). The elitism of obscurity is passe anyway.
Its sad to say but with a little work these could actually be good. I havent considered myself a FAN of rap in a long time, but there are a few songs that almost work. On the OoT only the last one had a prayer of working. Its a cool artistic effort, but I wouldn't pay for it...or listen to it a second time in most cases.

This is lazy. It's just rap dropped on the FF tracks. No fades, loops, additional beats. Very lazy, very boring.

An example of a good hip-hop remix of an FF track
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgYUpfZUsI4
Official release, but it's a remix of FF6's "Searching for Friends" (World of Ruin, in the Airship overture)

Ah, me too. Jay Z with Linkin Park got me into listening to mixed music. Feels very refreshing especially for a metal head like me. Just checked out the shadium arcadium, +1

Super Mash Bros, anybody? They do Girl Talk style album-length mash-ups of rap and pop, rather than the 1:1 song to song style.
I'd recommend FBGE, but they have another album, too.

*"Eminem vs. Disturbed" ("Till I Collapse" vs. "Down with the Sickness")
*"Jay-Z vs. Red Hot Chili Peppers" ("99 Problems" vs. "Give It Away")
*"Eminem vs. Jimi Hendrix" ("Superman" vs "Purple Haze")
all of the tracks sound good, but those three stood out for me. till i collapse vs down with the sickness might be amazing (i'm about to listen).

To ill trooper Yeah I was just about to mention the Wu-Tang Beatles mashup. Why are so many people complaining about it being mixed with rap. Artists like Eric B. and Rakim, OutKast, Saul Williams, A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, Jay-Z are great artists it is a shame that all the rap that gets out there is Lil Jon, Soulja Boy and Lil Wayne they are disgraces that give rap a bad rep. Also at ill trooper nice avatar.

I see you're beyond the concept of a writer taking literary license for the sake of interesting writing... OK.
Does the term 'Disc Jockey' bring you to a dead standstill? Nary a horse in sight! Confusion. Don't be surprised the next time you order a "hamburger" and it's actually beef...

That makes no sense. Those are the actual terms used. Disc Jockey is not literal, same with hamburger, but those are what they're really called. "Mixologist" is another name for a bartender, not someone who mixes music.
"Interesting writing" is not an excuse for blatant inaccuracy.

the word was probably used because the author thought it would be funny and didn't know that it was a term that means something else. if the author did know then he made a really dumb pun that makes no sense.
anyway, my post was mainly to inform people who did not know what the word "mixologist" actually means.
unrelated: stupid ass comment system

" 'Mixologist' is another name for a bartender, not someone who mixes music. "
But here it is also used as "another name," to describe a remixer or DJ. For me, it's really akin to calling someone a "maestro of the racetrack" or "butcher of words," it's simply a repurposing of a word to bring a more unique or colorful vision to the reader.
You're really unable to understand that the writer is alluding to how a remixer or DJ is mixing audio elements and songs like a bartender mixes ingredients to create a drink?
I find that hard to believe.

Awful. Ditto the the Zelda album they made.
The only saving grace is that some people seem to tolerate it, but it's just so poorly done it drives me nuts hearing it. There's no real mixing whatsoever and the sound levels are bad. Just two tracks going at the same time, basically. Even if that was what they were going for, I just can't appreciate it especially considering some other fan mixes out there.
Again though, at least it's enjoyed by some. So it wasn't a complete waste of their time...

Not being a real fan of Final Fantasy, I don't really recognise these songs, aside from the battle theme. It sounds messy and midi-ish, but good for them anyway.
Gucci Mane and his type is the reason why I haven't bought a hip-hop record since that Edan record way back - whenever it was. It was the record with LL Cool J on the cover.

I can't tell if this is bad because it's bad, or bad because Final Fantasy 7 is bad. Either way, Ocarina of Rhyme was much better.
