"Rumour: Nintendo Opens Liverpool Subsidiary; F-Zero Wii in the works?"

Would be a nice end to this story, IMO. Amusement Vision did a banging job on GX, but they're pretty tied up in other developments. Couldn't think of a better group to pick up the franchise, wish them the best regardless.

A better ending would be: "Nintendo picks up Studio Liverpool devs, Star Fox Wii in the works."

I know I was hoping for another add-on. I guess the chances of that are slim now.

Same here, I love WipEout, and I have HD as well as the Fury expansion. It is one of the best racing games ever conceived! Good luck to those laid off in finding other jobs!

I don't know what's sad, Sony laying off these folks, or blogs clamoring for anonymous tips for hits on their site. Either way, you will not bring these guys jobs back. I hope they get back on their feet soon.

Sucks to hear this. They've had a pretty rocky run the last couple years with project after project canceled. Wish them all the luck in the world... Psygnosis was a huge part of my childhood, and they've been nothing but a class-acts durring their Sony years.

This is terrible news. Studio Liverpool have produced in Wipeout HD / Fury one of the most well-received and technically brilliant games on the PS3, and personally one of my favourite games of all time. The studio has had a long history of making games of exceptional quality and were obviously hugely talented. For Sony to cull half of the studio seems absolutely moronic given the wealth of talent they had in that team. If any of SL are reading this, my thoughts are with you, and thankyou for putting so much work in creating the masterpiece that is Wipeout HD / Fury.

It's because Liverpool should have fired Rafa Benitez long ago. Hopefully he can get a spot coaching in Italy for Juventus though.

From an employee, posted on another board:
"Thanks people.. I dodged the bullet...

Im safe.. but that doesn't mean I'm happy...far from it. There is hardly anything left now... the amount of good people that went yesterday is disgusting... and some of the names that have gone is beyond a joke.

We haven't merged with Evo... they have came in and just bulldozed us. They don't care about our history and what we stand for.. making QUALITY games..that score 90+% on metacritic.. rather than generic shovel ware.

Or management went.. our projects, now 50% of the staff.. we find out our 'future' on Monday... but I fear a knock out punch is coming."

They all need to leave, form a new studio, and then hook up with Microsoft. Hard to believe a studio with so much talent is being razed like this.

No, that's the last thing they should do. Microsoft has destroyed so many studios it's not funny. Plus, they shuttered most first-party development in 2008/2009.

I mean as a 3rd party. I certainly wouldn't go to Nintendo unless they were willing to give you one of their own IPs to work with and they would clearly be hesitant to work with Sony again.

I hadn't been aware that Sony owned Evolution. We are talking about the Evolution that made Motorstorm, right?

Yeah, Sony picked them up in...I think 2008.

They've got a lot of studios.

I'd heard from a friend in Liverpool that they were completely shut down, so I guess it's not as bad as I thought. Still pretty sad to hear though.

I'm sorry, but this was a very uncool move on Sony's part. Studio Liverpool/Psygnosis has been one of the most consistant developers for Sony. Surely there was somewhere else they could've made cost-cutting measures.

Agreed! I discovered Wipeout much later than most but nothing comes close to it. FZero can suck it, Wipeout is my favorite future racer!

I haven't bought HD so well... HERE I COME! :D

This is surprising. I was under the impression that Wipe Out HD sold pretty well. And weren't they planning on doing a WipeOut disc based retail game?

Being someone that lost his job because of Sony's "fun-cutting" (last October at Idol Minds), you guys out there all have my sympathy and support. Keep your heads high!

I really hope some people from this studio get the balls to do their own thing. I think Most of the industry is understanding now that if you want to make new and interesting games that it get's harder and harder the bigger the company you work for. Videogames are getting so homogenized as far as art and innovation goes... and liverpool really proved themselves to me with wipeout hd....I just really wished they could have had a chance to apply that style and finesse to something that wasn't wipeout.
