There's a surprisingly large sect of characters in World of Warcraft who live their entire lives without ever stepping foot outside of their race's capitol city. To some, the MMO's in-game auction house presents a more compelling gameplay option than the usual dungeon raiding and level grinding -- it allows players to become wildly wealthy with shrewd business practices. According to an announcement made by Blizzard earlier today, these players will be able to manage their auctions on-the-go using the Armory app on iPhone and iPod Touch.
Little is known about how much control the app will give players over their in-game assets, however, references to the service being "premium-based" have led to conjecture that the functionality will cost a few coins. Real-life coins, that is. You spend the real-life coins for the thing that lets you make the fake-life coins. This is going to get confusing.

Think how confusing it will get when blizzard starts selling fake money for real money and people start auctioning it off.
Then you have to spend real money to auction fake money that you spent real money on to get fake money?

Totally off topic but did anyone notice the WoW Easter Egg in Mass Effect 2? Talk to the game salesman in the citadel and you'll soon find it.

I keep meaning to go there the next time I start the game up to see what all the fuss is. But I'm too involved in WoW right now to turn my Xbox on.

That's cool. I can see how it would be really useful, sometimes it was a pain in the ass to have an auction not sell and have to get home hours later. Of course, I dont have an iphone and i wouldnt pay for it if i did, but it's a neat idea

You'd think Blizzard, a company that's always supported both Mac and PC, would release this on platforms other than the iPhone. Where's the Android love?

It's being released in the normal web Armory *and* on iPhone/iPod Touch. The Joystiq article is a little misleading, but read the actual link to see what they wrote.
Also, they only say *some* functionality will be "premium", so it's possible some of it will be offered free.

This move has Activision's greasy fingerprints all over it. Ever since Blizzard became an Activision property, the number of "premium" services for WoW has increased by something like 400%. It's true that you don't have to pay for them if you don't want to, but this move in particular has a hidden agenda.
As soon as anyone (from anywhere, at anytime) is able to manage auctions remotely, people that are only able to manage them through the actual game will be at a severe disadvantage. Therefore, anyone that is serious about the auction house (i.e. all raiding guild members, anyone trying to earn gold) will need this app in order to keep on top of their auctions, even while at work or school. Essentially, all hardcore (and many mid-level) players will be required to have this app.
To put it bluntly, this is one of the first moves made by Activision-Blizzard that will compromise game balance (via the game economy). I would suspect that it is the first of many--if you're willing to pay the real dollars, chances are high that within the next year, you will have the (legitimate) advantage over people that can only manage their monthly fee.

Will it really be that big of a deal? People will be able to remove and repost items and buy shit when they arent home. I cant see that as colossally upsetting the economy. It's not anymore of an unfair advantage than people who play more do

In the same way, game balance was thrown off from the get-go when Blizzard chose to allow players unlimited play time during the day. Those people that work part time or don't work at all can sit at home most of the day while the rest of us that work cannot.
It's just as stupid (or accurate).
There are two resources players have.. 1) Time, 2) Money
People being able to take advantage of having either of those resources in abundance is always going to be there.
That's life. Make more money if you don't like it. If the rest of us don't like that people can play all day then we've got the same option to find a less demanding (and probably less paying) job so that we too can sit around playing wow as much as we want :-)

oh and before someone mentions 'when does it stop then'.. Well it stops when I don't think it's worth and and stop spending money on it. It's that simple.

to the writer of the article: i usually agree with most things said on this site, but i have to argue that buying, with real money, something that allows you to make money in a game is not a confusing concept at all. stupid maybe, but not confusing.

Because $15 a month times 1.2 gazillion players isn't enough.

The AH is one part of the game that i enjoyed a lot. This new feature lets people play it without launching the actual game? Quite convenient really, gets people glued to WoW, even more, good bye real life. Of course in the end, not like you can buy an iPhone or a PS3 with all that in game gold or anything, you know, stuff in real life?

Nothing says sleaze like micro-transactions.
Way to go, Blizzard - you're one step closer to convincing me to stop playing your game.
Old Republic can't come out soon enough.
