Officially licensed external PS3 HDDs hitting Japan for 'torne'

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has given its official endorsement to two upcoming 500 gigabyte external USB hard drives for PS3 -- in Japan. The Buffalo HD-AV500U2 (pictured) and HD-CL500U2 are the first add-on storage solutions to receive Sony's blessings, and are being released overseas in March to coincide with the launch of the PS3's "torne" DVR hardware / software combo.

Apart from the fact that they're officially licensed, neither drive boasts any special features that make them usable only with PS3; in fact, the tower design HD-CL500U2 (¥11,800 / $130) is essentially one of Buffalo's external HDDs already available in the US, with a model number change. The HD-AV500U2 is designed to fit into existing entertainment center setups and features a blue LED display on its front that shows remaining disk space. It's selling for ¥14,800 ($164).

500GB for 130? Wow, Microsoft Needs To Open Their Eyes...

That's the only real thing you can say about. Since you can get a USB powered 500GB for well under $100.

and at the same time, it's not a good price at all either.
You can install an internal 500GB drive for more thn $70 less.

Hmmm..... Just earlier today I paid $129.95 for a 1.5TB Western Digital External HD on the egg. I have one already, and can verify that it works just fine on my PS3.

...but mine is not "blessed" by Sony.

exactly my point.......Hard drives are crazy cheap there's no way id pay 130 for a glorified external hard drive

If Sony didn't bless it, then your hard drive is going to hell. Must be a tie-in promotion for Dante's Inferno.

Oh boy, now I can do what I've been doing all along with my WD external drive..

Sorry I just don't see the point of this at all.

Just get an internal 500Gb/2.5 hard drive and shove it into the PS3, it's cheaper. Then wait until they come up with 1Tb sata drives

hmmm.... I got a 1TB external hdd and it cost me those same $130 with shipping included, and I can use it on my PS3 as well.

The question is, can i copy/move my copy protected save to the external drive?

Why? I can slap a WD 640GB drive into my PS3 for 108...

It's not a bad price for an all in one solution. However I'd still rather upgrade the internal HDD on the PS3.

Can we save to it like we can our Internal? Because my brother has an External to his PS3 and it's pretty much there for just watching movies off of it.

you can copy saves to an external drive but "locked" saves remain "attached" to the user who created it.
