According to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS required some editing to EA's Super Bowl ad for Dante's Inferno before it would expose America's fragile hive mind to it. No, it's not because of all the demons and the brimstone and stuff, but rather due to the game's widely-used tag line "Go to Hell." As you can seen in the clip after the jump, it's replaced by "Hell Awaits."
The change is likely because of worries about offending conservative viewers, but we're secretly hoping that Doritos is launching a new super spicy chip during the big game and it just didn't want Dante copying its line.
its wasn't CBS. It was the folks writing in to the FCC and then the FCC who made that into a huge deal. CBS only cared that they were going to have to pay a hefty fine.
You guys are misinterpreting this. CBS doesn't have a problem with "Hell". If that were the case, the edited version (Hell Awaits) would still cause an issue. CBS isn't being conservative; they're just afraid that people will be offended because if you tell someone to "Go to hell," it's generally an insult.
As a gamer, I'm not offended because I already know about this game and how XTREME EA is trying to make it, but I don't represent the general population. I can see where CBS is coming from.
@Sonos You do realize that the Super Bowl rotates between the main three networks, right? NBC had it last year, CBS has it this year, and FOX will have it next year.
I love being conservative, everyone else works to protect my point of view. Liberals are suckers, they have to fight and bitch and moan for theirs to be protected. Me, I'm good to go from the start.
CBS has been right-wing since they sucker punched Dan Rather. They wouldn't air an ad about tolerance from UCC but will air a holier-than-thou ad with Tim Tebow and his "I'm better than women who would listen to their doctor instead of their religion" mother. Dante's inferno should be able to stand on its own suckiness. Aren't we expecting Go To Hell to be the kind of dialogue from Dante's Inferno? Shouldn't a consumer get exposed to the lame scripting before purchasing this rip-off? For better or worse, consumers are being decieved by CBS.
I wonder in the far away future when I play games that look like this CG trailer. Will I be satisfied with the graphics or will I gripe on how the physics are or the controls suck...
So first CBS cuts the 30 sec ad for the gay, online dating service... They cut "Go To Hell" out of Dante's Inferno... But they're letting Tim Tebow show his pro-life ad?
All of these are politically motivated. Either show all, or show none.
That's ridiculous. They're a business. They don't and really shouldn't care about fairness and the logical conclusion to censoring one add over the other. It makes sense to show/not show ads that your viewerbase will agree/disagree with
The Tim Tebow ad isn't likely to make people turn the channel. A gay dating ad is, as is Go To Hell. If you've got kids watching with you (the Super Bowl is pretty family-friendly), an ad talking about anti-abortion isn't going to make them question stuff. Seeing two dudes kissing is.
Uhh - on a normal CBS night this would ring true... but their viewerbase on Superbowl Sunday will HARDLY be limited to the normal CSI/NCIS-watching crowd. There are MANY people who will be offended that such a polarizing, serious and politically motivated ad will be aired during one of the biggest party nights of the year. El Punisher is absolutely right - there is a reason for this censorship, and it's political in nature.
So Bradwart, tell my why it's OK for two men to be shown kissing under the guise of a moronic, unfunny and universally offensive joke about reversing such a horrendous act out of some faux sense of masculinity.
Now tell me why it's not OK for two men to be shown kissing who are supposed to be emotionally connected to each other.
@fadeoutagain I guess I don't really see it as political so much as they're playing politics because it will affect their profits. I just get the feeling that CBS is making the assumption that the majority of Super Bowl watchers, if not Americans are football watching, deer shooting, Jesus loving people who would be inclined to agree with a pro life ad. I'm not saying whether or not this assumption is correct, but it will probably turn off quite a bit less viewers than a pro abortion ad would
I think, or at least hope, that bradwart is referring to the snickers guys as morons and not the dating service ad. And im prettty sure they're morons because they rip off their own chest hair
@Bradwart Questioning stuff is the single most important skill all kids must learn. Stuff includes prejudice towards homosexuals and religious fanaticism.
CBS is not just a business - they are a network that uses the public frequencies for free. The deal with the American people was that they play fair, report the news, not discriminate in exchange for free airrights.
They're always concerned about offending conservatives but not concerned about offending the majority of Americans who are middle of the road or liberal. No UCC ad? No silly video game ad? Yes Tim Tebow ad?
Perhaps conservatives, or CBS, need to buck up a bit.
Check your facts, the majority of the United States have always considered themselves to be conservative. I'm not talking Democrat or Republican, but conservative.
