We've always thought the regular inclusion of slot machines in the kid-friendly world of Pokémon to be bit strange, and apparently we weren't the only ones. According to Official Nintendo Magazine, the English-language versions of Heart Gold and Soul Silver have had their gambling devices replaced by a new mini-game which, according to the magazine, is surprisingly fun.
In the new game, players must flip over panels in a five-by-five grid. Some panels hide multipliers for the player's coins. Some, however, hide Voltorbs, which end the round and cause the player to lose all coins accumulated to that point. You can guess where each Voltorb is hidden using numerical clues at the end of each row and column -- it other words, its Picross meets Minesweeper. Meets Pokémon. Yes, please.

I never really enjoyed the slot machines, but they were already a standard in the series... oh well.

I never enjoyed the slot machines either. It was always faster, and more productive, to just beat the Elite Four a billion times, then use the money you make to buy coins. We'll see how this new minigame pans out... Even if it is fun, beating the Elite Four for money is probably still going to be the fastest way to get coins.

Agreed, slot machines sucked. But the roulette table in Ruby/Sapphire was epic, I loved playing that.

I wouldn't trust the "surprisingly fun" part too much. I used to read the UK Nintendo Official Magazine and they are known to suck up indiscriminately to anything made by Nintendo.

The concept itself sounds pretty interesting. I'm interested to see if it actually is any fun.

I feel the need to point out that this is from Official Nintendo Magazine, the UK magazine.
We all know that Platinum removed the slots machine in Europe, but not in America, and this is a European magazine.
So keep that in mind, the American version may still have a slots game!
But on the other hand, the EU version gets this interesting sounding minigame instead of simply having a games corner WITH NO GAMES, LOL.

I like new stuff but not at the expense of something removed that has become a standard... this is a cop out. The best betting game was introduced in Gold/Silver. I really liked that "card flip" betting game.
It's important for kids to learn that gambling can be addicting INSIDE the safe environment of a Video game. I've been playing Pokemon since the beginning and have never felt the urge to go gambling with real money. (not over the value of a pound coin anyway)
What about STEALING the HARD EARNED CASH from every trainers you HAVE to fight EVERY STEP of the way though the game?? At least with gambling you are only risking your "lively hood" in the casino, not other trainers.
What about the forced slavery of sentient life, in where you command this species to fight your battles for you.
How are kids going to be able to cope with the real world if they are not exposed to small pieces of other cultures, and way's of life? A GAME = Not REAL LIFE.
What's next? Will "Bartering" be removed from fantasy games, because it encourages kids to lie about true value of items they are selling?
Anyone can look "too much" at any aspect of a game to find offense. Certain concepts in games, need to be left as they where placed originally.

I never liked the slots since that was the only way to earn enough special pokemoney to get the special TM or HMs so I hope the North American version has this instead of slots.

I had no idea there was a remake coming for this. This might be the reason to get a DS. If only there were to be a "Clear Crystal" version of it. And I'm still waiting for a remake of Pokémon Yellow.
