Look, I'm really sorry for the layoffs, but if there is only 250 Game Crazy stores left, and the only other option is GS, then online is the only way to go.
*No sarcasm about the layoffs*

Sure, the market right now is a s*** hole, but if you have good skills, the chance of loosing your job are less than a job that anyone can do it.

I am not trying to be a prick, but every time a company closes, someone post about the jobs... We know that, people lose their jobs everyday... Its life.

well if you aren't trying to be a prick, i guess you're a natural.

it always sucks when people lose their jobs due to closures - regardless of their education level.

Just to put it out there. I am one of these unlucky people that is losing my job. Am i angry about it? Yeah. Am I gong to whine? Most likely. But I will just have to continue my schooling (just finished General Ed.) and get my master's. Until then I have to work these jobs to pay my bills. It sucks when I lose a job due to my company's incompetence, but life is what it is. I forgot the point I was trying to make.

I went to a Hollywood Video recently to rent a game that came out the same day, they were always good about having games the day of release and not asking for a bunch of stupid shit like Blockbuster does ("Ill need your credit card for a Lego game, YOU THIEF").

They didn't have it and I noticed all the PS3 games they had were from like 2 years ago, so I asked, and apparently that store was "under review" to monitor their store progress for the next few months, so as part of that they removed all the recent games from the store and denied them new releases until around... now, actually.

I'm not sure what person thought this might be a good thing to do before watching their sales. I didn't return to the store since I knew they would never have what I wanted.

Lol.. there's no way they'll be coming back.. If you look at it, then have near a billion in debt and only around 60 million in assets. The whole thing will collapse within the year. Get some deals while you can! :P

That sucks. The Game Crazy a couple blocks down from me was really great, the workers were nice and the games were always in stock. Like most other Game Crazy stores though, it shared rent with Hollywood Video. IMO Hollywood Video was much better and closer (and MUCH cheaper than Blockbuster). But Game Crazy closed because Hollywood Video couldn't sustain intself, and when I asked why they couldn't, the manager said that they actually made enough money to rent out the whole complex, but the margin of profit would be too small for good business; it shut down the day Halo 3 came out. The percentage of games I've bought since then is probably 80% lower than when I purchased from GC. Sure it may be the recession, or the $60 price tag, but I think convienence is most important. I don't want to buy games online. Netflix is a different story, and Gamefly just isn't the same.

RIP Game Crazy_September 25th 2007.

I rather going there in Chicago land as well. I also liked Hollywood video more than Blockbuster once I started going there. The people were more friendly and they were not as pricey. It's a real shame they are shutting down. The GC and HW near us just shut down a few months ago - and we were pissed to have to go get Blockbuster cards again. Now I am all about Redbox!!!

I worked for Game Crazy for two in a half years during college. During my time there, the Game Crazy side of the Movie Gallery equation actually made money. However, due to the poor status of brick and mortar rental stores, most Game Crazy locations must close along with their shit-rental counterparts.

After graduation, it took a full year for me to find a full-time career. I feel very sorry for some of my friends who are still with the company. The store I was located at made it through the first wave of closures, and I hope they make it though this one. No one should ever have to be out of a job with the circumstances are out of their hands.

I live in Vancouver, WA. Vancouver is the home town of Game Crazy before they were bought by Hollywood Video (who were then bought by Movie Gallery). I worked at the original GC store in the Vancouver Mall during High School and it was sad to see that store close a few years ago.

No matter how much of a proponent I am of digital distribution, Game Crazy was always the gaming store for me that felt more like a comic shop than a "big-business" retail chain. It's going to be sad to see them go.

Actually, in times like this the "mom and pop" stores are usually better off than huge companies with hundreds of stores that were probably already in a little bit of financial trouble before the economic crisis which then exacerbated the whole thing.

I think the local game stores are doing quite well overall. Just a hunch though.

Mom and pop stores can typically ride out these types of economic times much easier. The problem with giant chains is that they typically expand quicker than their revenue does to support it. So in the slightest bit of turmoil, they crumble. I've been reading up that a lot of major chains expanded too quickly during the 90's, when credit was easy breezy to get, and now they can't get any extensions and such. Krispy Kreme, Blockbuster, Circuit City.

Movie Gallery just... Ugh, everything I've read says that they bumscrewed themselves by purchasing Hollywood Video. HWV was so racked in debt that anyone who bought them was dooming themselves. Sad that the one profitable aspect of the empire gets hurt so badly though.

They already closed all but one within 50 or so miles of me, but I always have Play 'N Trade. The downside is that Play N' Trade (yes, reversed apostrophe, I'm not sure where it goes) closed its best store and the ones that are closer to me are kind of a ripoff. I miss the one that was disorganized but had loads of Dreamcast, Sega CD, Xbox, Gamecube, and Genesis games that I was interested in; all of which at killer low prices.

Look guys and gals, as a former Game Crazy employee, I can honestly say "The Hell with them".

If you think Gamestop treats their employees like crap, "Movie Gallery" practically rapes your soul. Every single person who works at a Game Crazy is expendable to the point where a used copy of "Run Like Hell" is worth more. They fire people who actually know a good deal about the gaming industry for the reasons that are really not worth it. They go through a large deal of employees, and never really keep one around for too long, unless there tongue is completely brown from being jammed where the sun don't shine.

For one, the store I used to work at (QUEENS VILLAGE, New York, REPRESENT!) transfered a Manager in Training from another state. He didn't "look the part" of a manager due to his tattoos and piercings, so they strung him along for months until finally telling him he had no job anymore. The poor guy had left his family for a new job in New York, only to get shafted.

They fired me for cursing out my supervisor and another employee for stealing my DS, even though I was a model employee, lived close by and filled in for anyone at anytime, and LOVED my job.

A good friend on mine was a manager. After I stopped working at Game Crazy, he stopped talking to me. He was pressured by his superiors to not associate himself with former employees.

Another friend of mine was fired because a customer wrote a letter to the company, with a false story of the said employee cursing him out, which did not happen, as I was present for that moment.

When I was a kid in high school, I would cut damn near every day just to hang out in Game Crazy. I felt like I was good friends with the manager, who later, became a district manager, later becoming the reason I was hired 6 years later, and also being the sole reason I was fired.

I hope the stores get looted.

I am a former employee of a Game Crazy in Eastern PA and I can vouch for this guy.
I know retail corps care a lot about sales, but gamecrazy does to a ridiculous degree. They honestly treat you as if you are a real estate agent.

You even get graded on how many trade-ins you ring up! You can't control that!

They care about sales 101% and passion and knowledge about games -1%.

I got fired because I didn't feel like giving the mvp membership speech to LITERALLY every customer, even though I was the most knowledgeable in the store about games, the one who question were always directed to. Never missed a day. Never yelled at other employees.

All about the sales. More so than normal retail.

My wife has worked for Game Crazy for 10 years. I worked for them for almost 6, but then quit to go back to school. She's much better at it than I was. The company truly does care about sales of mvps and preorders above all else. Can't get the numbers? Can't work there. The ones around here have always managed to stay staffed with passionate gamers, though. Tournaments and midnight launches abound. Fun place to work until it wasn't. Anyway, the point of this post was that they will keep you if they value you. Making them value you is the tricky part I guess.

I was a manager at a Game Crazy as well, one of the first to get the axe years ago before the purchase by Movie Gallery even. I was hired and given the store but it was closed like 4 months later. They gave me another store in the district which I tried to make the most of.

I will say what these guys say is true, they care more about sales and MVPs then anything else, but they are in the business of making money, or trying to! I had no hard feelings towards them in the end. I left to move on to something better and my DM told me that was best cause he was getting pressure to make a change anyways with my store because of the numbers. That is the business of retail, be it shoes, books or games I suppose.

They had some great things going on with the try any game before you buy, they really encouraged store tournaments, and a lot of my fellow managers were pretty big gamers. But lets be honest, its still a business in the end.

It'll be interesting to see what happens if both Movie Gallery AND Blockbuster fold in the next year(both highly likely). I'm curious to see if smaller regional chains were start to rapidly expand, a rise of mom and pop stores again, or if the entire brick and mortar rental system will collapse(doubt this).
