Of course, there's always the question of whether the sales were spurred on by marketing money or, y'know, the actual quality of the game. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions are averaging in the low 80s on Metacritic -- what did you think of it, sports fans?
NBA 2K10 nets two million sales

We're not sure what sort of numbers 2K Sports had hooped hoped for, but no one can argue that two million copies of its latest basketball sim, NBA 2K10, is anything but a ... slam dunk. The label announced today that the game has reached that lofty figure worldwide, which it says marks a 60% increase in units of NBA 2K9 sold during the same period last year. (Though it confesses that this year's sales figures include versions of the game for PSP and Wii.)

gross, no sports game deserves 2 million in sales. If i had picked up a controller and played only sports games when i first started gaming, i wouldn't stay long, and i probably wouldn't end up as a gamer

granted sport games come out every year which is why quality isn't that good in most of them but really when it comes down to it every game is repetitive i.e. you shoot this move on to next level, finish this lap first, punch this guy till he's out, etc. The point is just because you're not a fan of sports games doesn't mean everybody else is.
Side note: I'm surprised that 2k10 sold well considering this is the crappiest version (IMO because of the framerates/bug issues) in the last 4 years. I really hope 2K steps up their game for next seasons bball.

It was released with very little play testing in various on and offline modes, it has been patched 3 times! and still people are having server issues with many of the new modes such as crew games, and pick up games . before purchasing 2k11 this year I recommend fans go check out the 2ksports forums, and see what the reaction is there day one.

Even after patches, problems still remain.
I've been an avid player of sports games, and the NBA games in particular used to be a day one purchase for me, but it has become to common that the games are released with massive problems that need to be patched. So I stopped buying sports games on launch day, and wait for them to get patched at least once before getting them. Hell, this year, I just put them on my X-mas list. I still enjoy them, but it makes sense to wait.

2k10, even wit all the initial fuss is a great game! The living rosters and NBA today immerse u into the game for months. Even the little things are done exceptionally by the 2k team. Haha, the only game in my ps3 for 'bout 3 months now.
Only tiff I'd have wit it is the commentary which isn't sometimes accurate and little repetitive.

I'd say it's a combination of the marketing and the quality. 2K has been on top in terms of quality for a bit now but I barely saw any ads for Live in comparison to the plethora of ad content for 2K10. Maybe EA will get it together and do a high-quality release for $20 dollars to grab market share like 2K did to them.

2K10 is awesome because of My Player mode. Regular season play is boring and online is still broken, but My Player rocks.
But yeah, before the last 3 patches, the game was horrible. Sega deserves the low sales for being so lazy.

Well with these figures and NBA Lives sales I wonder if this will show a increase in selling power of having strong competitors in a market. Which could get the NFL to change their ways and let some competition enter into that market as well.

If you do not want to play online, 2K10 is a solid game. If you want to play online and are trying to get all the achievements, good luck. Even after being out for months, it is very difficult to play online because of server issues. Patches are released and they fix some issues but cause others!!!! FRUSTRATING.
Last night, I tried to play in online pickup games. I successfully connected and completed 1 of 5. And no, it was not my connection. How do I know? Because the people in the game lobby were messaging back and forth asking what the eff was going on. Thanks 2K.

what? no. I metacritic everything, so i have numbers to back me up. Just because you're shooting something doesn't make it repetitive. shooters aren't released annually, with the exception of CoD... which is still in development for two years since they have two development teams. Sports are mostly pretty crappy reviews, and they're released every year with next to no improvements.
Sorry if you like sports games, and you probably have your reasons... but in my experience, my friends that play madden would never play a game like okami and only play sports games because they're too embarrassed to play games otherwise

been playing this game pretty much non-stop since it was released. it's my favorite b-ball game yet. very tight controls, and realistic where it counts. i've restarted association modes 5-6 times with the new rosters that come out to reflect my favorite team's changes, and i find it extremely fun to play with other users' uploaded draft rosters. i use it both as an arcade sim and a "text based" management sim, and i enjoy both quite a bit!
ps. i also love games like okami and ico (even bought madworld). in fact my favorite game of all time is probably the dagger of amon ra - an old school PC point-and-click murder mystery adventure game. how's that for an ignorant sports-loving NBA2K fan?
