With posts that go back to 2006, the public embarrassment that is Sadness is far more interesting than the game could have ever been. The epic tale of vaporware, which is comparable to Duke Nukem Forever, receives another notch in its timeline today.
The latest is that the Sadness website is gone and the URL is up for grabs. Developer Nibris has yet to speak on the matter and, frankly, whatever they say doesn't really matter.
Dare we say this is the end of Sadness? Heck no. Where there's a developer and a desperate fan base, there's a way.

I am a little shocked. I still have hope for it. It's always looked interesting to me. :(
I wonder why they've had such problems with it?

Never heard of it. Can I get a recap of what it was and why it was anticipated?

It was supposed to be some kind of black and white survival horror type game.
For some ungodly reason, it got hyped up beyond belief before the Wii launched, despite the fact that the "developers" had never made a game before, and never even showed any actual game content. Their trailer was just concept footage of a woman walking around with a flashlight.

When you read that back, it really does make the whole story sound stupid.

You aren't.
There's something weirdly... off about it.

I remember making fun of Sadness way back. Puns galore. It was a Polish (?) developer that did absolutely nothing else. Just sad, really.

Well at least it has accomplished it's namesake.. :'(

I suspect that Sadness is a text-based online MMO in which certain character class called "developers" are tasked with causing other character classes called "gamers" and "journalists" to become repeatedly sad and disappointed. Developers collect sadistins from every gamer who gets excited about the possibility of Sadness coming out on a console and then gets sad when its doesnt; 5 sadistins for each journalist who does so. The only way to beat developers is being happy that Sadness wont come out or ignore Sadness news.
So, Sadness has already been released and WE ARE ALL PLAYING IT RIGHT NOW!

Hardcore games don't sell on the Wii.
They're obviously going back to the drawing board and putting it on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

You guys should have bought the URL and redirected it here.

And that's why it doesn't exist anymore (we're speculating here).
Hardcore 3rd party games have done so poorly on Wii.
It's just not worth it.
And I'm a fan of many Wii games. Super Mario Galaxy is amongst one of my favorites this generation.
Sadly, many people live in denial and refuse to look at the sales.

Oh man, nostalgia!
I was still in game journalism back when this was announced. My rag snatched an interview with these guys. There weren't so much serious developers as a rustled up group of Nintendo fans with high aspirations and some pocket change.
Good guys with great intentions. Everyone poked fun at them, but they really were *trying* to get this stuff out, least they gave off a good impression to me. I was really routin' for 'em.
Not surprised, but I admit I'm a little...sad.

Sadness had a website?

I've been trying to keep tabs on this game ever since it was announced nearly four years ago. Everything about it - a post-WWI psychological thriller - sounded incredible. I was sold. Originally I would check the website nearly every day. Then once a week. Eventually, once every few months. I finally emailed Nibris about it back in July and never heard a peep back. Even still, finally having the website disappear...I really am disappointed.
See you in another life, Sadness.

well, this answers my question on how the game will play. it won't. while I was not taken away by the hype when this broke years back - it did look to have some promise. towards the end my belief was the game would play like a FMV title and you'd just be selecting 'paths' to take within the game.
IIRC they did make a couple of shooters for the DS, was it them that did Nanostray?
anyways - as someone said above - the stiq should rent the domain and redirect to this post. that would be pure win.

I just want to throw out a middle finger to any of you sad saps who thought this shit was actually going to release. This was some sad no-name developer playing on Nintendo fanboys with the hope of drumming up enough hype for Nintendo to buy into their garbage... it didn't happen, Nintendo is smarter than that. I hope this company and it's "games" is officially dead with this news story and Joystiq never posts another Sadness/Nibris related post again. Leave those posts for the half-wit "Gonintendo"-esque sites.

This is disappointing, albeit not unexpected - I mean, the website hasn't been updated for something like a year and a half. Apparently right now the game is stuck without a publisher, and given its history it seems unlikely that anyone will pick it up. Still, I think the game has tons of promise and I hope, in my heart of hearts, that it will come out someday, even if that doesn't look very likely.
