A quick note for anyone out there still clinging to the first iteration of EA's Skate: It's time to move on. EA has updated the page for Skate's Reel service, which allows users to upload and share videos of their in-game exploits. The update reads, quite simply, "Servers for the skate.Reel feature will be shut down on March 1st, 2010." It also notes that the game itself will still function properly, but users will no longer be able to upload videos to share either in-game or via the Skate website.
As tipster Cal points out, there are some Achievements related to uploading videos, so you'd better start capturing those sweet runs and massive bails before it's too late.

Well does this apply to the Skate 2 users that purchased the Replay Editor DLC?

This is one of my biggest complaints about all the online services attached to games these days.

Dedicated servers are better as an option. If your game doesn't support them at all, or if it uses only publisher-provided dedicated servers, than that's a problem.

@ Vcize: that's because they are.
Take IW.net. If/when they decide to shut down MW2 functionality, the way it stands now you won't even be able to play MW2 online at all.
With dedicated servers it's basically ''power to the people'' and you'll have servers as long as people are playing and willing to make/rent servers.
You're not reliant on a companies keeping their servers or online services up.
Not to mention that dedicated servers are plain smoother to play on from a standpoint of power, ping and lag.

I'm confused, I was under the impression that MW2 is peer to peer. I mean I've been in dozens of games that have had host migration.
so wouldn't that mean that MW2 will be available online as long as there is XBL, PSN, steam? wouldn't that make it better than dedicated servers in this area?

Don't forget, the Multiplayer match itself is Peer2Peer but finding games isn't. You still need a central server for that. Finding other players via P2P would be unreliable and time consuming. THAT is what you pay for on XBox live (the searching for games infrastructure including libraries is from and run by MS), not the actual playing of multiplayer games (as that is either P2P or in the case of EA or FF11 via the publisher's servers).
IW.net serves the same purposes, so that you couldn't find any games without it - at least if you don't hack the client.

If you think that's impressive, Quake III Arena, Starlancer, 4x4 Evolution, and other Dreamcast games are still online as well.

The gameplay suffered severely. It seemed that while they added things like getting off the board and moving around equipment, they lost a lot of the magic that made the original so great. The animations seem clunky, the controls are nowhere near as smooth, and the whole game lacks the style which made the first game such a success out of nowhere.

you guys were seriously happy with the way skate2 looked and played?
To me skate2 took a giant step in the direction of the tony hawk series rather than keep going with what I thought was the Skate direction of smooth lines and animation. Emphasis on style over anything else

Listen up developers,
If you're going to eventually shut down your servers, then do not make online only achievements! EA is particularly bad about this.

If you are taking down servers for your games, would it be that much of a pain to put in a quick update for P2P play? At the very least then some people who still want to play can. I am not developer so I have no idea if this is cost and time effective.

It wouldn't be easy unless the game was designed with that in mind from the start. Using user machines as hosts can mean a higher emphasis on optimization of data transfer, and would probably also require that you reserve some CPU power for keeping track of all the networked props in the game (normally these would be handled mostly by the server).

This is why they should just allow you to upload directly to YouTube instead of using their crappy servers.

MW2 unfortunately does use ''listen servers'' (ie. p2p) but you have to go via their proprietary network namely IW.net.
No IW.net = no matchmaking = no Multiplayer
So 'no'. MW2 will not just be up as long as PSN, XBL and Steam are online. If IW/Activision decided to turn off MW2 functionality, that would be it and players would have no say in that.
