Here's some data from Sony's fiscal Q3 earnings and, as predicted, the electronics giant had some positives things to report out of its gaming division. However, like always, with the good comes the bad (and sometimes the ugly). The good: "Due to the launch of a new model, approximately 6.5 million units of PlayStation 3 ... hardware were sold in the current quarter, compared to approximately 4.5 million units in the prior year's third quarter," reports Sony's Q3 earnings report. The PS3 Slim continues to drive hardware sales, with its slim new form factor and, more importantly, slim new price tag. Now the bad: "Approximately 4.2 million PSP units were sold in the current quarter, compared to approximately 5.1 million units in the prior year's third quarter." And the ugly: "Approximately 2.1 million PS2 units were sold in the current quarter, compared to approximately 2.5 million units in the prior year's third quarter."
It's when you get to the PS2 software sales that things really get ugly. Sony sold 11.2 million PS2 software units, a 62% drop from the same period last year. The bad: The PSP sold 15 million units, a tiny 3% drop from the same period last year. Just like the hardware numbers, the PS3 software numbers are the good: Sony sold over 47.6 million pieces of PS3 software, a lovely 17% jump from the same period last year.
But things aren't so bad for the beleaguered division. "Despite a decrease in PS2 hardware and software unit sales, as well as PSP hardware unit sales, profitability was relatively unchanged mainly due to an improvement in the cost of PS3 hardware," Sony reported. Sony's Q4 forecast predicts more of the same: a "decrease in PS2 hardware and software sales" and "an improvement in PS3 hardware and software profitability." And that's how console generations work, boys and girls!

I could have swore the entire population of Earth had a PS2. Where the hell were these 11.2 million people hiding?

That's just Software sales, not hardware.
But even 2.1 million PS2's seems high.

I'm pretty sure the sharp decline of PS2 stuff is that stores have stopped carrying the consoles as of the playstation2's10th anniversary.
I think it's a bonehead move, I was about to go buy one since my ps3slim wont play my ps2 games and I was kinda missing playing them from time to time. But I got the same story from several retailers.
Retail sales are gonna go down if your retailers aren't selling it, kind of a no brainer.

So, does 'an improvement in the cost of PS3 hardware' mean they make a profit? Or that it's been slimmed enough to not matter?

Any chance someone can point me towards a list of the "new" rules? This is typically the sort of things you want to let your viewers/commentors in on..

Drop in PS2 sales isn't surprising. Still impressive that after all these years it's still pushing out in the millions.
I wouldn't be surprised if those rumors of a psp relaunch come true now. I just hope they don't make it too much cheaper or better. I just got one ;)

You know, I am a bit shocked. I have been looking for a week for a ps3 near where i love, and other then 1 refurb from a gamestop, everywhere is totally sold out. I ended up ordering from amazon. I am shocked their numbers are so high if they cant keep units on the shelves.

Not happy with PSP progress, since they released the GO, its like they stopped caring and reverted over to push the PS3 full throttle. What are they planning? See I wouldn't mind so much if the PSP2 was releasing soon, but I'm waiting for new exciting games for my PSP, and few are coming my way as opposed to before, like a year or two ago when I was spoilt for choice.
Come on Sony, pick up the pace.

I am actually now considering getting a PS3 for the first time ever. Can I ask: How is it as a couch websurfer? Is the keyboard and browser full function? Flash?
This PS3 just might be an iPad killer for me. And I can play Uncharted, Flower and other stuff rather than iPhone games

It's a little slow for the most part, at least compared to what I'm used to...
I don't think it plays flash; youtube works fairly well though!
And oddly enough I've never tried using a keyboard... you've got me interested now!

It's fairly 'meh'. It supports flash, you can watch youtube and flash vids on joystiq but not everything works well.
Will do for a couch browser.

I cant believe PS2 is still selling that much. Of course you will have a decline at this point, but that's hardly something to consider negative-it's been out 10 years and the successor has been out for over 3. I wish they'd come out with an HDMI output with DVD upscaler. Well, actually I don't really care but I don't think it would be a terrible idea if it was cost effective.

I'm on my third BD drive on my 60G. I just think it would be nice to have the option to play PS2/1 games and DVD's in upscaled HD without burning up my drive on my PS3. Not a big deal, though it would be nice to have the option. I use my PS3 a lot.

I'm happy to have contributed, is that weird? A bit. Oh well, I'm still loving my Slim much quieter than my old 40 gig.
