You know Gamer, right? That movie with a pasty-faced kid controlling human prisoners in a future game? Well, it turns out that the film almost ended up as a Grand Theft Auto joint. According to a recent interview with co-writer/director Mark Neveldine, "We [Neveldine and co-writer Brian Taylor] actually were going to be hired to write GTA. I am sure that was part of it. That was after we wrote and directed Crank, so I got involved with GTA pretty heavily, I didn't grow up with it."
Neveldine claims that it was a "rights issue" that caused the silver screen adaptation of GTA to founder. "It was a movie originally directed by Ron Howard ... and because Rockstar Games made a video game, there is some battle of who can use the title ... you can't make it about the game." Back in 2008, Variety alleged that a GTA movie was on the precipice of production when the deal fell through, but we get the feeling that these folks are speaking about something completely different.

So about an hour into the film, the main character will start jacking cars, picking up prostitutes and then killing them, shooting people on the street, having the cops chase after you, go to the top of a building to snipe more random people and cops, fire rockets at a helicopter, and then jump to his death?

And now I just pictured a GTA movie with Jason Statham.
I must say, it is quite a good image in my head.

I actually got the DVD of Grand Theft Auto bundled in with my copy of GTA3 back in the day as an in-store promotion.
Looking back it was not a very good deal. They shouldn't use the name of something to bundle in a product that has nothing in common with the game other than it's title. It would be like getting a copy of Mirror's Edge and getting a free mirror.

A GTA movie would be nothing but a shameless cash-in of a franchise. GTA is GTA because of the gameplay, not the story or the characters which change with each installment. You cant translate that into a movie, it would be even worse than RE.

I disagree. I know I will get a ton of flack for this, but I am quite fond of the Resident Evil movies. Also, as a longtime fan of the Dead or Alive franchise, I thought they did a great job bringing it to the big screen.
I think the problem is... when something is interactive like a game, the focus of the player isn't nearly as much on the story as we'd like to think it is... for the most part video game stories just do not hold up to the quality of story found in other mediums. Of course, our opinion of the game isn't based purely on the story, so when we hold a game in high-regard, it generally doesn't have as much to do with story as it does with gameplay/cool gaming moments.
Take for example Bioshock. Fantastic game, I think most of us can agree. Most will also tell you it has a fantastic story... but does it really? I submit to you that if you divorce the story from the gameplay and examine the story alone it's both simplistic and heavy-handed. If it were a book, it would be some pop sci-fi novel trash; if it were a movie it would be a hollywood blockbuster. And that's one of the best written games of the past few years.
Which is all really just my nice way of saying that I think frequently the source material blows (from a purely literary standpoint), but fanboys nontheless expect that somehow in the translation to the silver screen it will become high art.

Exactly. They may as well call the "GTA" movie "The Bludgeoning II" without even making a first movie and call it good.

Two parts to this:
1) If you want to see a movie worse then anything Uwe has put out watch Repoman. Not the new one coming out, Repomen, the orignal. The one that came out like 2 years ago. Horrible movie.
2) Postal was pretty good, but then again I enjoyed the Postal games.

thing is GTA is something that you can EASILY make a movie off of. Like Cap said in a post above me, just take The Transporter movies and mix them with the 2 Crank movies and you have a GTA movie EASILY...

so you would have a GTA movie sort of like GTA3 with the Italians running things then. I look at GTA now and would think the movie would be more of a Modern "gangster" flick with a younger director...Scorsese is THAT dude for Mobster films but I dunno if I would want him to do a GTA movie...I would just want a lot of explosions, drugs, pointless pedestrian attacks, cop shootings and more....I mean thats another thing....would they REALLY be able to pull off having the national guard running thru a city with tanks? what would their budget be like for that movie!! lol

No no no. It's very simple. It's because they already made one, and it's called Gone in Sixty Seconds.

So...their plan was to make a movie called "Grand Theft Auto", which would have NOTHING to do with the videogame series, and would only serve to make fans of the series BELIEVE it was based on the games, so that they would all go and see an awful movie with no relation to their beloved franchise?
Yeah, regardless of all the recent controversy with Rockstar (I swear, is the phrase "Rockstar" ever NOT in a sentence with the term "controversy" in it?) and their employees, I applaud them for this decision. They could clearly see what those hacks were up to.

If it's a titles issue, they could work around it. If the other movie's "Grand THeft Auto" Their's could be GTA, or vice versa. Or am I wrong in this?

A GTA game would be great! It could be about a ruthless killer, possibly a mobster, and could really let the viewers indulge in some sadistic acts; chainsaws, gunning/running down dozens - hundreds even! - of innocent civilians, police, committing every crime in the book, and throw in some gratuitous nudity, and near-limitless ammo.
Oh, wait. We've GOT that already; it's called: "Every mindless, boring, self-indulgent, sadistic action movie + torture porn flicks like Hostel."
GTA is GTA *because* it doesn't translate into any other medium; and it doesn't translate into any other medium because it's not a story, or a plot-driven, sweeping, timeless, epic, narrative -- it's a decidedly awesome kill-simulator. That's about it. And it's great.
But there's a reason no one has made it yet. And there's a reason that Tetris: the Movie doesn't exist. And why Doom was so atrocious. And.. Dead or Alive. And Silent Hill ... Street Fighter ... Far Cry... Super Mario Bros...

SMB was good if you don't mind that the Goomba's look like the Charger from L4D2.
And you don't mind the humanistic Bowser, but then again due to low tech a dragon like Bowser might've ruined it more.

i doubt a movie based on this game would do so well... for authenticity they would have to film it at only 20fps, use a floating, unresponsive camera for driving scenes and many theaters would be forced to downgrade or use beta drivers on their projectors.

When playing through GTAIV, I felt that an animated GTA movie featuring Niko would be brilliant, because he was as believable as any film character outside of the cast-iron classics.
I liked his sense of humour, his facial expressions, his kick-ass, military-bread hardness. It would have rocked.
