After surviving harrowing losses of ¥22.8 billion (nearly $254.8 million) during its fiscal year 2009, Sega Sammy Holdings (parent company to Sega, which you've probably sussed out) has managed to revive its faltering bottom line. According to the company's latest financial report, Sega Sammy brought in a net income of ¥16.9 billion ($189.5 million) during the first nine months of its fiscal 2010 (April–December 2009).
This income came in spite of the fact that Sega's total game sales had dropped 13 percent from the same 9-month period the previous fiscal year -- however, thanks to the company's massive restructuring last February, operating income skyrocketed to ¥28.8 billion (about $323 million), which more than softened the blow. The company's highest-selling title was, alarmingly, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, with 5.6 million units sold (and probably counting). Bayonetta, which was only available in Japan (released October 29) during the period covered by the report, came in a distant second with 1.1 million units sold.
It looks like the company's managed to recover from an extremely painful fiscal 2009 -- at a cost.

Nearly all the staff that led them through the glory days of the Genesis and the Dreamcast are gone. There's not much hope (or point). The market really can't support four consoles.

Sega's never ever going to have the money needed to even enter the console market again, let alone maintain it. It's just too expensive nowadays.

Both David Rosen and Isao Okawa wanted Sega out of the console market for a reason: Sega would be better off selling software.
Of course...they didn't plan on Sega's software divisions going to pot either.

How is there not much hope? Just because a lot of the old staff is gone doesn't mean a new staff couldn't do a good job? And "Glory days" of the Dreamcast? That thing was awesome, but it went down faster then a 2 dollar hooker.
The staff that was there at the time is what tied the noose around SEGA's console future.
And how do you know a market couldn't support 4 consoles? Please elaborate with something substantial.

Sega's made a lot of great games lately? Would you care to let me know what these great games are?

Mystile, the Dreamcast died due to pirating morons, not to mention Sega had every intention of leaving the console market after the Dreamcast was finished, even if it was a success. There never was a plan for a Dreamcast 2.
And when has the market ever supported four consoles?
Not to mention Tmac is right: Sega doesn't have that kind of cash anymore.

The market has never supported 4 consoles, but the same could've been said when SEGA and Nintendo where going head to head. When Sony came with the PS1, there weren't ever 3 consoles.

Wrong. During the 16-bit era the US market had the Genesis, SNES, and Turbo-GrafX 16. During the Atari era there was the CBS Colecovision, the Mattel Intellivision, and the Atari VCS.

Actually the Dreamcast died because the PS2 had a secondary use as a DVD, something that was bit of a trojan horse for Sony seeing how DVD players were not as prevalent in homes in 2000.

That made matters worse, yes. There's a lot of debate over whether Sega could have afforded to put DVD in the Dreamcast if they hadn't had to pay that 10.5 million dollar settlement to 3Dfx regarding the Black Belt designs...

Actually in the second generation of consoles, there was more than 3 and we all know what happened then...

Yeah what Whylekat said. Everything about the game has "appealing to a japanese audience" written all over it. It should have sold more.

I have this feeling that the American numbers are either going to be insanely high, or insanely low. Yes, I'm literally predicting both outcomes. Pachter should hire me as an assistant, because I am like the second coming of Nostradamus.

Good for Platinum, I say. It's about damn time one of their games FINALLY was a bona fide success.
...too bad it's easily the worst game they've ever made, IMO :\

@samfish - The article specifies that the game was only available in Japan. The chart seems to say otherwise. I hate it when charts and words conflict.

I am just glad Sarah Palin got her own video game. Is there a moose shooting scenario in Bayonetta? Like old school Oregon trail style?

I would love to have bought a copy of Bayonetta, but I don't pay full price anymore. Despite that, I'm happy to hear positive sales numbers for Sega.
Much like HD DVD, I miss my Dreamcast. I think I miss my Dreamcast just a little more.

Hey, I still have an HD DVD player and a hell of a lot of HD DVD movies.
I bought them when all was "failing" and saved myself a whole truckload of money.
And having the standalone player means I don't have to use my 360 or PS3 as a SD DVD drive, I can feel more comfortable using my HD DVD player, that does a very nice job upscaling.
Simply put, HD DVD may have "lost", but for me, they've won! :P
