Dragon Quest VI remake approaches 1m Japanese sales in first week

The debut of the Dragon Quest VI remake for DS proves that a Dragon Quest game doesn't have to be entirely new to sell like crazy in Japan -- just new enough. In its first week at retail, January 25–31, the new version of the classic Super Famicom RPG sold 906,458 copies, according to Media Create, making it by far the top-selling game of the week.

A pair of other newly-released RPGs also did quite well: the PS3 version of tri-Ace's shooty-RPG End of Eternity (we call it "Resonance of Fate") landed in second place on the weekly software chart with 118,088 units sold (the Xbox version charted respectably at #8, selling 27,048 units) and Ar Tonelico 3 hit #4 with 81,633 copies sold. Even the Japanese release of MAG managed to make it into the top ten!

I'll agree with you on Gotenks, and I'll even suppose that you know about Akira Toryama, but that girl looks NOTHING like C18.

The blonde one? Looks just like her, same hairstyle as android 18 and everything it's just a little longer than the android's hair.

Not sure if there is sarcasm in this post, but you do know that Akira Toriyama did the art for both Dragonball and Dragonquest right? That's why they look so alike.

I didn't know that until I looked at that box art, then it was obvious. My point was, he's kind of a 1 trick pony (pretty sure he did the blue dragon art too).

He did do the art for Blue Dragon also. I would disagree he's a one trick pony though. He also did the art for Chrono Trigger, and a number of animes that do not follow this art style.

I agree that Toryama's art is a bit limited, especially when compared to geniuses like Eiichiro Oda.

Maybe Akira Toriyama has exclusive rights to do the artwork for everything with 'dragon' in the title... Curious, how "Dragon Age: Origins" would look like with his art... hmmm... Now, that's just creepy.

That's agreed Eiichiro Oda is a pure genius. His imagination has no limits. Best manga writer and illustrator. Ever. Period.

He could pass as SSJ2 Gohan as well. Dude to the right has a similar face to a few chars. in DBZ as well. I for one can't get enough of Toriyama's art style. I wish he'd continue DBZ..

Yea he does look very similar to gotenks. but the android 18 is a lil stretch lol. but to his right is definitely android 16 lol. and how are they floating above the city? Nimbus Cloud? lol

That's cool that they would do a cross over franchise game between Dragonquest and Dragonball z. Goku looks pretty badass on the cover.

What is up with all these people who don't know that the Dragonball series creator is also the artist for the Dragon Quest series? Even if you're not into RPGs, this should be common knowledge for any videogame fan. It's like knowing that Peter Moore worked for Sega in the Dreamcast years. Or knowing that the voice actor for Marcus Fenix in Gears of War also does Bender in Futurama.

Or maybe I just store too much useless trivia in my head >_>

Selling? I don't think 20k units would be selling... i mean it IS selling, but you know what i mean

20k in a week is fairly decent in Japan. The population is much smaller than the US so you have to take that into consideration.

I've played with many Japanese people on Socom back on the PS2 it had a large following there so this doesn't surprise me at all. They know it's a Zipper game so it's going to sell regardless if it's Socom or not.

Not at all surprised by MAG selling over in Japan. You'd be surprised how popular the Socom series was in Asia on the PS2.
