When we saw the iPad at Apple's less-than-exciting unveiling event, we noted that the upscaling on iPhone games was a bit blurry. But, hey, we're no certified graphicsologists or anything. Luckily, Kevin Ng is, and through the help of the iPad SDK, he's compared the appearance of his game WordCrasher running on the device in several ways: at native iPhone resolution; using the iPad's zoomed-in "2X mode" and -- through a little bit of tweaking with the SDK -- full iPad resolution.
His results in running WordCrasher at native iPhone resolution and in "2X mode" pretty much mirrored our own observations: standard and pretty ugly, respectively. When blowing up the iPhone version's graphics on the iPad, jaggies became prominent and it was a pretty ugly experience overall. However, when Ng rolled up his sleeves and started fiddling around, he found that tweaking his game to run at the iPad's native 1024X768 resolution helped create some strong visuals.
Ng credits the device's support of OpenGL ES 2.0, which allowed him to "use bump maps and other shader techniques to present more realistic materials." Again, we're not graphicsticians (see? we can't even get the term right!), but it seems like the initial cries at the device's inability to make teh purty pics may have been a bit unfounded.

Hmmm, industry has a different take on it...

It's no big deal if you don't want to game on these devices, but realize games will be happening on it, and millions of people will play them.

People game on the iPhone because they have one. People have an iPhone because it's not a useless piece of crap (even if it is unreasonably locked down). If people don't buy an iPad because it IS a useless piece of crap, people won't game on their iPads that they don't have.
Also, I came into this comment section just to make sure someone had posted "Nobody cares," or I was going to do it. Kudos. :)

I don't get the point in this article? Scaling things up to fit the screen looks bad but remaking it to fit the screen native looks good?
I could have told you that without even knowing what device you were talking about.

I'm not really bitter about anything. I just don't see why any reasonable person would care about a novelty-sized iPhone.

I'm not bitter. But I am annoyed at these articles. This is a great article for engadget, but on joystiq I expect news relevant to gamers. A a general tech enthusiast the iPad is interesting, but it is not a proper gaming platform and has no place next to devices like the PSP and DS. I don't feel like it belongs here. More than the ipad itself not belonging here this article is extremely pointless. We already knew that games could be stretched or rendered at their native resolution the day the iPad was announced. There's no reason for a whole article about it.

I have a PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360. My iPod touch gets the most play. Sorry - this is relevant news to me and I welcome it on a gaming site.

These are screenshots from the simulator for the iPad, not from the iPad. The game looks great in 1024x768, but this is using the Mac hardware to render the graphics, not the iPad hardware. It might not be the same on the real device.
Let me put it this way, if I told you a Mac could render good looking games in 1024x768, would you be surprised? Well, that's what you're seeing here.

You have a point, but just to clarify: Are you doubting that the iPad can render a simple 2D game at its own native resolution?

These are polys with textures. And the textures are all stretched and rotated as the discs rotate and are of different sizes. There is no guarantee the quality of texture anti-aliasing and rotation (i.e. mapping) displayed by the graphics card on the Mac is the same as on the device.
Is it likely to worse? I dunno, probably not. But either way this article doesn't add any information to the discussion. It doesn't even tell us how the 2X stretch will look because that's being done by the Mac card not the device hardware in the simulator too!

I think the iPhone is incredibly awful as a games platform - sure the games look great but they ALL control horribly - unless it's a puzzle game like Peggle - which is awesome. So I can't see how the controls on this big bulky device would make them any better.

i dont think you should be saying that towards the ipad. who knows maybe you guys just suck at it, you never know.
i went over to IGNorant and they gave a horrible review to CoD ModernWarfare reflex for wii. and they complained about the graphics of course >_> but even tho it was better than W@W they still said it was worse.
but back on topic, they said the controls were the worst ever, saying how "the wii has some good games for their unique controls but you wont find it here" which made everyone furious! because the controls were spot on perfect, especially the controls far surpassed the conduit which was all about controls. now people that actually believe that garbage will pass up on such a great game.
now the people who reviewed the wii game is most likely a 360 or ps3 fan boy but since i only have a wii i appreciate the wii controls over standard analog sticks for FPSs anyday!
but who knows maybe they're people who prefer the ipad controls better than others. i for one might. have you ever played a fps on ds? i cant stand! the controls (and graphix. tegra FTW) if nintendo decides to use the multi-touch (which is pretty much a 99.9% chance) in their touch screen then we can finally actually have a good FPS for a handheld like how psp controls it but instead of the analog stick and buttons to move the ds can have the touch screen for the analog sticks and d-pad and buttons for everything else

I wish people would stop trolling the iPhone posts. If you don't game on the iPhone or don't plan on getting an iPad then pass up the post.
I don't read the 360 posts, but that doesn't mean that I dive into the post to leave comments about how I don't. Jesus you people are annoying as shit.

i know the ipad isnt a gaming device but isnt it like a laptop? didnt apple say it was like a touch pad/lap top thing? in any case if the pc came out with a new crysis game or sumthing would that be here?
if yes then why is it there? isnt it just a pc not a gaming console?
so if anything, i think an ipad game deserves to be here as much as a pc game does.
im no apple fan but im just trying to be fair.
and sorry for all the questions. do they bother you?
