My FupaPS3 plays PS2 games I like it a great deal more than the slim PS3. I also just don't dig the SlimS3's design.

The slim is so more more sexy than the phat in person. I have my broken 40gb next to my new 120gb and it's so much more sleek and less square.

In all seriousness though doesn't MS count systems shipped as opposed to systems sold as Sony and Nintendo do?

I'd like to know how Joystiq is quoting Full Fiscal 2009 numbers when Fiscal 2009 for SONY ends Mar 31 2010?

@KSPRAYDAD: They aren't - theyr'e quoting fiscal year 2009 Q3 for the recent additions, and dispite not knowing Q4 fiscal 2009 is already higher than 2008.

Now we've reached the point where devs can't ignore the PS3 anymore.

It's about time.

And still Gabe Newall will just sit there with his mouth crammed full of chicken and Bill Gates semen, saying how the PS3 is a "failure" and he wont develop for it.

It's probably because his beloved Source engine is DirectX friendly and, despite OpenGL ES compatibility, doesn't work well on non standard architechture.

The Source engine isnt even that good these days. Yeah it was friggin revolutionary when it came out, but now-a-days it just seems very outdated

We reached that point a long, long time ago, i think. Aside from a few particular devs who just aren't going to get on board at this point, this generation is largely set for that

The only room for growth is for more devs to do a Wii project, but even then, we're going to be seeing the last wave of announcements in the next few months.

The source engine was never revolutionary... My favorite games were made with it and I can still tell you that it's a good engine, but it was never considered "revolutionary" in fact most people at the time of it's release thought of it as dated and unimpressive.

I've been wondering for a while when they were going to give a true re-vamp to the source engine. Was great in Half Life 2 days but looks a little dated now although it's hanging in there.

Gabe made millions while he worked at MS, him and Valve's other co-founder funded Half-Life 1 from those millions, yeah, hes gonna be loyal to MS, nothing anybody can do about that really; Steam will probably never be on Macs either.

Source is aging but it's plenty good enough to create a great experience with the right story, atmosphere and art.

I do wish they would figure out how to get over the whole PS3 thing and get their games onto it, there's plenty of other devs not having that problem.

lol I like where you're going with that, but most people's RRoD's are covered under warranty and probably don't get counted into sales totals. Also you could technically make the same claim for PS3's YLoD which was getting pretty rampant about a year ago, but has since pretty much disappeared.

But yes, I have full confidence that the PS3 and 360 will pretty much end this generation neck and neck.

Pretty rampant? I never heard of one case of the YLoD, but I know at least 3 people who got red ring at least once. I know the YLoD existed but I wouldn't call it rampant, especially considering how the estimate for failure rate is between over 20 and 55 percent since launch of the 360.

I called it rampant mostly because it seemed like a landslide when all of them started happening right around the same time and then almost immediately stopped. So it seemed like it was rampant. I could have chosen better words I suppose =P

I had the Yellow Light of Death on my launch PS3 a little past a year after I got it. Even though it cost me $200 for them to fix it I'm glad that they sent me another lauch model. If they would have given me one of those non-PS2 compatible ones I think I would have flipped.

Yes, but the 360 is only 6 million ahead with its sales generally decreasing, and the PS3's sales are generally increasing. Assuming the PS3 keeps this momentum (about 10+ million per year), whereas the 360 had 39 million after 4 and half years the PS3 will have at least 4 million more than that at its 4 and a half year mark.

But honestly, you could honestly consider them pretty much tied currently, especially when you consider the wii is beating them but almost double their numbers.

In all seriousness you really got to wonder. Are the 360's sale numbers that legitimate?

Not to sounds like a douche, but I know a lot, A LOT of people who buy second 360's due to hardware failures they receive, and even listening to all the podcasts I do I hear they do the same thing.

But the PS3 failures are nowhere near the 360 RROD failures. So the amount of people who have probably bought 2 or more 360 consoles is probably a lot higher than the PS3 numbers

Its called using common sense. I havnt said a single number becuase i know that its pretty much impossible to get an exact number. However the 360 is in the record books for the "Highest amount of failures". Ive yet to meet someone i know who has had their PS3 fail, yet every single person i know who owns a 360 has had it break down on them at least once. judging by those experiances and the experiances of every friggin other person on the internet, im gonna say the 360 has a much higher failure rate than the PS3, and thus has a higher chance of people re-buying.

Bigfat, the refurbs are terrible. People shouldn't get their 360 back from Microsoft to have it still RRoD when they turn it on. They're shoddy, and still only use a 65nm process on their chips, not 45nm like Jasper units.

Tmac actually has a lot more validity to his claims because the 360 has free repairs on their biggest cause of failures. So, although the 360 may require more maintenance, people generally don't HAVE to buy another 360.

Double standards seem to be the em-oh on Joystiq, though. The slimmer model really helped things.

I know 8 people that have bought 2 xboxes because of them breaking, sure they cover it for three years but the 360 is older than 3 years now. and wouldn't you know, they still break after 3 years. go figure.

also I know two people that have bought 3 xboxes!

that's 22 xboxes bought from 10 people. when you add in the refurbs they got for free...that number is easily in the 40's. I know someone that is on number 7. SEVEN! tell me that's not absurd!

I know 11 people with a PS3. not one has broken.
I'm on my second ps3, but only because I sold the first one when I moved to Oz.
