@ Big Fat: Validation is corroboration of an external source, if I say something and is corroborated by and external source ( the admitted buyers) then it is validated. I never said how much or how many though look to the past when the whole e74 and original RROD stories cameout and they were quite a few. Again what you considered common knowledge is wrong and again units shipped is not the same as units sold.

@ Big Fat : My stupidity? I am not the one that doesn't seem to understand the basic concept of units shipped to stores vs. units sold to customers. Not to mention the fact that you're trying to defend a company that cares nothing of you for making faulty hardware. I am the "pro consumer" gamer and I'd rather defend the company that screws me over the LEAST. It is the likes of you that would call Joystiq MS haters when the RROD debacle came to life when they in fact were trying to help you. Those 3 years extra were thanks to others that worry about the consumer and not some faceless corporation that to this day still denies any wrong doing.

Big Fat, you don't get it. There is a difference between systems 'sold through to consumers' and systems shipped. A shipped system is useless to the manufacturer, because they don't make any profit from game sales or Live subs.

@ Big Fat: Once again you are wrong, units shipped to stores DOES NOT EQUAL units sold to customers it basic economics that you seem not not be able to grasp. MS reports units shipped and both Sony and Nintendo report units sold to customers.

Units shipped is pretty close to units sold.

By units sold they mean units sold to resalers. That is units sold to Target, Wal Mart, etc.. it is NOT units that are in customers hands.

Units shipped might even be more accurate because that represents a fullfilled order. Sony might have sold that PS3 to Target, but that doesn't mean they have sipped it yet.

My PS3 just YLOD'd. I called Sony and they're charging me 230 bucks to fix it in Canada. It's bullshit.

Microsoft may have a high bloody failure rate but at least they don't charge to repair.

I've been lucky with my 360, only issue i've had is it collected dust and started over heating after a year. Which I opened up and cleaned myself, good as new.
But, to your response, I wouldn't buy the same console I owned already if it was getting repaired.

I only have one 360, and I know many who only have one as well.

I don't think it is necessarily bad. It shows how much people enjoy playing it that they are willing to go through many.

Of course it means that I'll be hesitant to buy the Nextbox.

Plus they are really inexpensive.

I can vouch for this. Where I'm working, the console cases clearly are divided into thirds. The first third being Xbox 360's, the second third being Nintendo Wii's and the final third being PlayStation 3's. (Like how how I set that up third, PlayStation 3. 3 and 3.... Nevermind.) Anyway, the Xbox 360 third, is flooded with Xbox 360's both arcade ($200) and Elite ($299.99) alike. I haven't sold any in the last few WEEKS actually and none have come in. The Wii case, obviously or second third of the case is entirely empty. Everyone wants one and the store can't keep up with the demand. The third section, being the PlayStation 3 is well.... Lets just say for a while, we had an abundance of them, but as of late, its hard to keep them in the store. We were even able to sell a Uncharted: Drakes Fortune PS3 no problem. There was a period of time where we went a while because the warehouse couldn't keep us supplied. We got a certain number of PlayStation 3's on a Wednesday, went in the next evening, they were gone and people are still calling in asking for a PlayStation 3. They're hard to keep hold of, but the funny thing, the Xbox 360's are sitting there collecting dust. Nobody's wanting them. Wii's are rediculous still. People buy them because everyone else has one. But the point is, YES! PlayStation 3 has taken off and selling REALLY WELL where I'm at.

Really? The only time I ever had a problem with my 360 was two weeks before GTA4 came out. I made my complaint, I had the coffin the next day, and I had my 360 with a few days to spare. Now maybe I just got lucky because Microsoft had a surplus of refurbished consoles, and not too many orders to fill out, but I still had mine just over a week after I shipped.

Three of those 360s are mine. I bought one at launch... then an elite when that came out because my first one went RROD. Then the elite got E74, so I got another one. The arcade has worked fine. However, when I bought my first PS3 shortly after I got the 3rd 360 and my 360 has been neglected for quite some time now. I used to be such a MS fanboy but I've fallen for the enemy...

The ign editor, Matt Cassamasina (or however its spelled), on his blog at ign, he writes that his latest xbox RRoDed and he went and bought another one, already on his 6th (or 7th) xbox 360; and he has 2 anyways, one upstairs and one downstairs, he still went and bought another one! He didn't say what he did with the broken ones though.

See here: http://blogs.ign.com/Matt-IGN/2009/09/14/128699/

My point is, just because you won't, don't think everyone else won't. But how much this type of cases adds to 360's units sold, who knows.

In the western world the Xbox 360 has a massive margin over the PS3...these figures are worldwide, and in turn include japanese sales totals; which dramatically inflate the PS3s sales and add maybe 1 million at the most to the Xbox 360s figures.

Take away Japanese sales and I'd say were looking at a 10-15 million unit sales lead for the 360.

Yes let's all rig the statistics by removing sales from particular countries. What would happen if you removed all US console sales from the numbers? Maybe then the 360 only has about 5 million total while the PS3 and Wii would still have tens of millions. This is a stupid point to even bother trying to make. The idea that because a console sells well in a particular country means its sales are inflated and invalid are just idiotic.

yes, but that whole thing works both ways. so whichever is your favorite console, take out the weakest link and that one will be winning. that's why global sales is the point here.

Well, one could also note that North America is the largest Video Game market in dollars. And that the 360 being nearly 10 million ahead and gaining in the largest market in the world is very good news for MS.

Add in the fact that the 360 is continues to perform above the PS3 in every country where English is the majority language and you have to wonder if Sony's sales aren't just them pushing themselves into non-tradition video game market areas.

i know it doesn't matter to most (especially fankids), but i wonder how many PS3s vs 360s are actually purchased for gaming. i have both and any multi platform game i buy or rent goes into my 360. any movie i buy or rent goes into my PS3. just curious how many others this kind of thing pertains to, even it's visa versa. personally, i just don't like gaming on my PS3. it just seems......inconvenient for some reason.

Well, I think the majority of people that own both consoles buy games for 360 rather than PS3 because either their friends have a 360 or they are already paying for Live so they might as well use it. However I bought a 360 Arcade a while back and I use it solely for single player games (I.E Fable, Mass Effect)

I would agree with you. I'm not big on the co-op and that is one of the main reasons why my 360 has not been turned on in ages. If I loved the online play like most I'd prolly go for the 360. I'm a campaign kind of guy though so I choose to buy multiplat titles on PS3. It gets used all the time for blueray movies too. I'm amazed at how many people say that is a nonfactor. I love that.

The Most I've PS3s I've ever heard of someone buying was 6, 2 of which he leaves running F@H all the time. As far as I know all work so he has 4 PS3s that he can buy games for and play on. The most Xboxes I've ever heard someone buying is 13 of which 3 work last I heard.

In terms of multiple placement buying I know someone who has bought 3 PS3s one for his Workplace, one for home and one for his Brother
For Multiple placement someone bought an xbox for himself and his father then bought two more to play on when the first two die while they were away then bought two more to replace the first two when they either finally die or won't get replaced any more.

These are just the most extreme stories I've seen from hanging around on the net over all of people buying things but in general you can expect an average owner for Sony stuff to buy two over the course of it's life cycle It seems an average owner of Microsoft's will buy two over the course of three years. The obvious extremes on the low end of each is one for the full life span the numbers on the other extreme are much much wider.

Agreed that someone willing to buy a single system closing in on 20 times does speak a lot about the value put on the system but it still means that the number of addressable systems in the wild that someone can sell a game on is probably more skewed on the Xbox than possibly any other console in history and certainly in this generation
(Most extreme was buying 3 wiis in case anyone cared no idea why they just said they had 3 and of course multiple PC buying is de riguer)

The write is just being sarcastic. It is NOT required to have 2 to play 3D. You DO need 3D TV For it though . However, to date, I believe there have been only 2 games released that employ 3D (one is a PSN fighting game the other I am not sure) .
