The office of New York Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo is investigating several well-known retailers, including GameStop, for deceptive advertising practices. According to the office's announcement, GameStop and 21 other businesses are directing consumers to fraudulent discount programs where they unknowingly share credit card information with a third party. These third-party programs then place recurring charges on customers' accounts. "Well-known companies are tricking customers into accepting offers from third party vendors," said Cuomo, "which then siphon money from consumers' accounts."
Online movie ticket company Fandango has already agreed to stop the practice and pay $400,000 to a consumer redress fund. The Attorney General's office rightly warns that consumers should take care in reading all fine print when signing up for any kind of discount offer.
Are there any Joystiq readers out there that have run into this problem with GameStop? (You might want to check your credit card statement before you answer that.)
Update: For clarification, as some commenters have pointed out, the investigation applies to GameStop's online business, not its physical retail stores.

We should thank them for taking our old TVs for free? I give my old stuff to salvation army and get a tax write off. I guess you can celebrate being lazy and inactive in your own financial dealings though.

If GameStop should be accused of anything, it's crappy commercials featuring the game their advertising with a crappy framerate and a hipster dude's voiceover.
But if they're being sued for deception then that's good, too.

Never ever going to sign up for that Edge Card now.
Nope...f@ck that 10% off their 95% profit scheme.
Also, I goddamn hate going into their stores and hear "Power to the Players" every 5 minutes. WE GET IT!

GS is just getting lumped in with a bad crowd at this point, they've only been accused of having a discount card.

I got ripped off by that coupon deal. I got about a $10 charge to my credit card that I did not recognize. When I called the CC company, it led me to that company that offers those discount deals from Gamestop checkout. When I signed up for the coupon, it signed me up for some type of account with that discount program, and they charged some kind of membership fee that I did no knowingly agree to. I never gave them my CC info, they got it from my Gamestop order. That was a year or so ago.
I NEVER buy from Gamestop anymore. The last straw for me was buying an advertised NEW guitar hero 3 bundle from Gamestop online, and when I got it, it was used and in pretty bad shape. The Gamestop customer service people wanted me to send it back AT MY EXPENSE if I wanted a refund. I hate Gamestop. I won't even get into how unprofessional and rude the majority of the employees of the retail stores are. I have been to Gamestops in multiple cities, from Seattle to Philadelphia, and they all rubbed me the wrong way.
Amazon, Ebay and National Console Support get all my gaming business.

For some reason in my neighborhood there is a GameStop right next to a GameCrazy. GameCrazy is Hollywood Video's game store, and it's right inside a Hollywood Video. So yeah I have a choice but it's too competitive.

This article should have been clearer. When I saw this news yesterday on another site, it clearly stated the online stores are doing this. This is an online scam that is not occuring at the brick and mortar stores. There are more big businesses involved in this than listed in the investigation too, I was surprised to see DeepDiscount missing as they are really annoying with this when ordering, but at least they don't keep offering it after the sale like GameStop.
GameStop.com even tries to get you to do this WebLoyalty scam after you order by including the link at the bottom of all the e-mails about your order, right above the survey link a lot seem to be confusing this with. For example:
"Thanks again for shopping at GameStop.
Click here to claim your Special Offer from our preferred partner for your next GameStop.com order when you join their service. Terms and conditions apply.
We want your feedback! Please take our brief survey and sign up to win a Wii & PS3 console!
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx"
The click here takes you to: http://www.gamestop.com/Orders/WebLoyalty.aspx?p=randomstringofcharactershere
Anyone run into this offer at Barnes & Noble's website? I just placed an order there a few weeks ago and I can't recall if they tried to get me to sign up. I have their membership card though, so maybe they don't hassle members. I do recall seeing this scam at buy.com though, hopefully this investigation will crush this for good.

This only happens if you buy stuff online. Had it happened to me once a few yrs ago when I purchased a game. When you opt to make an order from Gamestop on the net, they ask if you want to join some membership rewards program claimming that you will receive coupons and discounts in the future. Being naive at the time, I signed up.
Soon after, I noticed on my bank statements that I was being charged for 20 dollars a month
Since I didn't know what it was other than something with rewards on it, I googled the name and found out it was some rewards scam program. From what I read online, you have to call them to cancel and have to ask for a refund and any money they scammed you from. If you don't, they won't do it. I called them and asked to cancel, which they did. I also asked them to refund me the $20 since I was being charged an overdraft fee because of the charge. However, I forgot to asked them to refund me for the month before

gamestop has this thing where, once you complete a purchase online they tell you to go to this other site for a $10 off coupon for your next purchase. Once there it asks for your name and email and I think a few questions on your gamestop shopping history, and then they email you the coupon. theres nothing on either gamestop or the discount site that says itll charge you each month.
i found this out the hard way when my father gave me his credit card last spring to buy a gift. he checked his checking account statement and it showed a $50 charge to his account from the site, and none of us knew where it came from.
