It would have been nice to hear more of an explanation way back in October when Sega's Alpha Protocol was "officially delayed" to the amorphous "Spring 2010," but, unfortunately, that didn't happen. Speaking with MTV Multiplayer this week, though, assistant producer at Sega Matthew Hickman explicitly detailed the reasons for the delay, saying, "We really wanted to polish the game up, make it everything Obsidian planned it to be, and give the consumer a very polished game."
He added that there's been some "tweaks in lighting here and there," and the inventory screen has been revamped a bit, but in general the team has been focused on "bringing the whole quality level up." The post's author also notes that the game is set for a "Summer 2010" release window now, and we've reached out to him (and Sega) for clarification.
Update: The post's author has responded that, yes, the game's current release window is set for "Summer 2010." Guess that's another delay then, eh? We'll update again if Sega responds.

The only reason I was interested in Alpha Protocol was because It was going to tide me over before Mass Effect 2, and then the delays hit, and now I have Mass Effect 2, so good job Alpha Protocol.

Good job indeed, I don't have an Xbox so this will do me just fine. Thanks.
Day 1 purchase for me.

I believe there was a leaked internal response to Alpha Protocol testing made by Sony last year where they came back saying that it didn't feel like an RPG at all. So, yeah, it wasn't there to tide people over till ME2, but it'll be there to tide you over to ME3 and it more than likely will be a much better RPG.

I honestly have no clue what was funny with my statement... nor do I know why I got rated down (or at all).
For proof:
"Michael Foster, product evaluator, said AP felt barely RPG. Initial level too challenging for players. “Mass Effect felt more RPG.”

Alpha protocol will be better than mass effect 2. Maybe not more popular, but still better.

and what is everyone basing this on? That Obsidian made a completely different kind of game 15 years ago with mostly different employees?

These things are tough to make, so if the delays help them make a better product, then so be it.

The difficulty in creating the game is a given. The delay is because it looking like a last generation game in comparison to everything else that was coming out. I mean the idea of a Spy action RPG is one thing but compare the graphics to Mass Effect or Uncharted 2 and it looks horrible.

@PN04 have to agree. the graphics really do look last gen. Kinda like When Spy Fiction came out on the PS2 against Splinter Cell 3... AP just doesn't have good surface lighting NOR does it look cartoony enough to feel intentionally un realistic

It's almost like, 'After ME2, Obsidian should just give up.' this is likely built to match the first Mass Effect, and it's now too late.
I'll still buy it, but my expectations aren't high.

I love how I was downvoted for simply having a different opinion than everyone else. Good job people

When you state your opinion as fact, you get downvoted.
Plain and simple.
Nerdrage is gonna make you get downvoted as well.

@PN04
In this case I don't think it was Captain Nerdrage's opinion about Alpha Protocol that did him in, it was the fact that he said it alongside a very likely fact (that it wouldn't be as popular as ME) as if they were the same thing.
Of course, he also went off on the community in a NEW post about the OLD post and didn't take the goddamn hint.

Summer 2010 is good by me. Good summer games are few and far between - it would be nice to have something to play in the downtime

While I'm not convinced this game will be good (waiting till I can get my hands on it). I am excited to play a mass effect styled game in a contemporary setting....regardless of how lame/silly the story is. I don't see though why people are so ready to deny this game a chance... Obsidian is a solid studio.

I think people are put off by the lackluster screenshots and gameplay videos.
It's an honest challenge to make something like this work in the first place. Make the game too RPGey and the combat will suck. Make it a standard 3rd person shooter and the RPG aspect could be irrelevant.
Stat boosts and play-perks alone just don't distinguish a 3rd person shooter anymore. Heck, even the Godfather game had a good stat based character growth structure.
So it comes down to whether or not they can make the story any good, and your choices IN the story meaningful. Very few games have done that -- and the original KOTAR certainly was not one of them.
none of that makes us doubters confident in the product, even if we want it to be awesome.

They delayed the game what seemed like a few weeks before release. ME2 was a game-changer (Jimmy Cameron said so) in the RPG-shooter genre. Now, any game that comes along like it will faced raised expectations. And if Obsidian's past is any marker, it doesn't look good.

It is an American style RPG that will at least be tolerable, and it will give me something to do between dragon age: an actual expansion and (drool) fallout: new vegas...I'm not seeing the downside even if it doesn't measure up to the great shooter with dialog mass effect 2.

No, I think mass effect 2 may very well be the best game out this year, however it has left the verdant green pastures of RPG for the equally lush forests of Shooter...wow that metaphor really fell apart, but I'm sticking with it

Was at one time looking forward to this game, but this many delays can not be a good thing. Sounds like something was seriously wrong with the game.
..by the time it comes out I'm betting on a 65-ish Metacritic score.

I am looking forward to it. The earlier reports stated it was very hard and needed to be more accessible. It was never moved to sprong 10 it was moved to summer 10 directly.
I think moving to Summer 10 was a good idea we already have too many games in spring. With ME2, White knight, Star ocean international, FFXIII and teh numerous handheld games spring is overloaded with RPGs.

As many have said before me, I was going to use this game to tide me through until Mass Effect 2. This was before I found out the amazing game -- also made by Bioware -- Dragon Age: Origins. So I used Dragon Age to tide me through Mass Effect 2 instead.
I will still give this game a chance, but it is going to be hard to compete with a GOTY contender, as well as a game which many are calling one of their favourites of all time.

@Electronic Old Man: I gotta agree, Dragon Age was okay but it lacked that vital spark that other Bioware games have, was it developed by their Austin studio maybe?

I need this game. I love Obsidian. But holy crap, stop it, Sega. Release this damn game.
Polishing is about finished and nearly the whole team has moved onto New Vegas.
A spring release allows enough polish. We know you're delaying this to hopefully release in a dead month, but the more you delay, the more you date yourself. And if you do that, and it receives poor reviews because of it, no one will buy it anyway.
Release it by May.
