Miyamoto is a legend to be sure, but to say he is the greatest ever that's a bit much.

I understand he created the nintendo classics, and he certainly built part of the foundation of gameplay, but after a certain point nostalgia and familiarity start to alter people's perception of quality of his newer games.

if mario galaxy had ratchet and clank skins, people wouldn't praise it, but because it's mario...it's iconic, it's familiar...it sells, it gets praise. It's a brand.

For somebody to be the greatest ever, that person has to change with the times. and must constantly be innovative and relevant. Mm is kind of new, but damn that was the most ambitious game ever fully realized. And as much as I'm sick of metal gear kojima is constantly raising the bar.his stealth gameplay was new back in the eighties and his cinematic style was fresh in the ninties.

I'd guess 'new hardware' is likely a new handheld. The DS is getting a little long in the tooth, even compared to the Wii.

(Or he could just be referring to Vitality Sensor Plus.)

Space, Miyamoto essentially JUST reinvented video games with Wii Sports. How can you possibly say that is NOT staying relevant and with the times??
People don't praise Ratchet & Clank because the series NEVER did anything that would really be considered innovative. A lot of the praise Galaxy gets is because it is so completely different from the 2 previous 3D Mario games while also managing to be the first 3D Mario that incorporates the series' 2D roots, be it through nostalgia elements or level design.

The key is that gaming is not strictly an evolutionary thing, it doesn't just have to grow upwards, in terms of building on pre-existing foundations. Miyamoto's been growing it outwards, which few other big-name developers this generation can attest to (perhaps Mr. Rigopoulous of Harmonix, but few others)

Beat me to it again, Samfish. This gen Miyamoto has basically redefined the public's perception of video games, breached an entirely new market, and completely defied the traditional definition of "video games" themselves. You may not like it (or you may not like the shortsighted, cynical ways in which other companies have tried to cash in on it) but you'd have to be a fool to deny what he's accomplished.

Why is it that the Sony fanboys on this site hate Miyamoto so much. The guy is a legend.

Are you still upset that Miyamoto pwned Insomniac games.

I think a little too much credit might be given to Miyamoto's involvement in the current generation. It seems when ever there is something worthwhile in a Wii game, credit is immediately given to Miyamoto, even though for the most part he has only filled the 'producer' role recently, where his involvement may be minor at best.
Hell, his name isn't even on Wii sports.

Give credit where it is due, Nintendo is a big company with many designers, artists, and creative directors.

Probably DS2, I'd imagine. There's been an increasing amount of chatter about it, even from Nintendo themselves, so you'd think at least an announcement is coming soon. There is a rumor that Nintendo will be announcing new hardware at GDC this year, but... I'll believe it when I see it.

I don't imagine it'd be an HD Wii (NOT Wii 2), since Miyamoto doesn't seem terribly enthused by the possibilities of high def visuals.

Whether the Wii has a lot of terrible games or not, Miyamoto isn't fully to blame. He brings us pretty much the only good games that are on the Wii.

Don't forget that N's R&D is always working with new hardware, so this could be nothing. Of course the DS is over 5 years old - so I would have to side with others and think maybe there is an announcement coming for the DS sucessor this calender year.

I remember getting my phatso on launch day, coming home - being totally blown away by a) the Hunters demo....OMGBBQ...teh grafx!!! l00k!! and 2) the loudness of the unit

That morning is burned into my mind.

@Brad

They didn't screw up the system OS. Actually, they didn't even include one! Thats the biggest hinderance to the Wii moving forward. Not even the platry storage limitations, games, online etc, hardware ... it's the way the console was designed to function.

I know, mine as well. Is that sloppy, lazy or just a lack of understanding when it comes to modern day architecture? Nintendo is like a blast from the past man ... what a trip. They're still doing everything (except the controller) like it's the 90's and the craziest thing of it all is they're banking on it. They're like this strange relic from the past that refuses to change and adapt yet this one cycle it actually worked.

The Wii has more of an 'OS' than the DS, which isn't saying much.

And yes, that's unfortunate, but on the other hand, the CPU's not exactly got spare power to run multiple processes in the background while playing games... Given the small power jump over GameCube, it's a fairly reasonable decision. And at this point in the generation it really doesn't matter because what operating system changes were you expecting? Way too late for that.

Hopefully though they will do a better job next time, when they have the processor power to easily handle it. If they go for an appropriate jump in power, then running an entire Wii in emulation (maybe except the GPU?) shouldn't be a huge deal for a new operating system.

(I'm not at all sure that the next console will have a 'real' OS either... it doesn't seem a strong point of their development. Fingers crossed, though.)

My guess is that limitation was part of the processor structural limitations to begin with, the GameCube obviously wasn't designed with an OS in mind, architecturally, so the Wii would be incapable of one either way, given identical architectures.
