With Activision's holiday fiscal report expected to release this week, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter is predicting that the Call of Duty profit machine may not repeat its fantastic 2009 performance this year. As reported by IndustryGamers, Pachter believes the Call of Duty franchise will generate "sharply lower revenue," in 2010, to the tune of a $250 million decline. Not to worry, though, as he notes that Activision is likely to more than make up for that amount thanks to Blizzard's impending releases (hello, StarCraft II). Aside from that, of course, it's important to remember that we're talking about a $250 million decrease on almost a billion dollars, so it's not like Pachter expects Call of Duty to wind up in the toilet.
It's worth noting that the previous Call of Duty title, World at War, initially outsold Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, though Modern Warfare remained on top after the dust settled. Unsurprisingly to anyone paying attention, Modern Warfare 2 turned around to outsell the original Modern Warfare. Still, all three remain among the best selling games of all time, so maybe it's okay if the next one is only phenomenally successful.

Is "Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter" the only guy that matters when it comes to people who analyze the industry (who aren't an inherent part of it, like an industry exec or dev)?
His opinions seem to be worth something... but It seems like he is the only analyst ever mentioned here...
Is "Wedbush Morgan" a private company, or is it owned by any conglomerate in particular?

True, but I would really like to see something new from either Treyarch or Infinity Ward

I actually want to see what Treyarch does with the Vietnam setting. I thought MW2 was terrible (single player and plot wise), and I have CoD4 and 5 for multiplayer so I won't be buying MW2.

@Bradwart: I'm not a rabid CoD fan or anything (in fact, I'm a hardcore Halo fan), but MW2 is plain fun. It really has the arcadey shooter feel down. I'm kind of happy Reach is going in that direction, obtaining rewards and killstreaks are addictive.
I could see not liking it, but it's not a poorly made game or anything.

MW2's story was wacky as hell, but the online is damn near perfect. if they somehow managed to completely eliminate glitches and hackers, it would be perfect. and i'm hoping treyarch does well with whatever they do. they did a great job of psychologically freaking you out in WaW. not necessarily scary, just... freaky.

You mean except for the fact that people that can run around at 20 mph and stab you from 10 feet away and the fact that you can get a kill with a shotgun from like 20 feet away just by aiming in that general direction, making all other guns useless, right?

@Traceur
MW2 is evenly balanced with A LOT of powerful weapons and tactics. The variety of them makes the game balanced. If you haven't figured out a good counter to rabid knifers, then you just suck. Why don't you try the heartbeat sensor or the shield? IW even toned down the 1887s cuz people like you can't handle their range. Yea, it's crazy range for a shotty but there are counters to EVERYTHING in the game. And while I never used 1887s like that, I'm more of a ranger guy myself, I can definitely see the fun factor in using a shotgun with long range. Waaaaay to many JS commentators complain about this game when it is MOST EVIDENT that you just don't have TEH 5K1LLZ!!1!!

I don't play any Call of Duty games,* but I can hardly blame people for buying a sequel. I mean, why buy a new Halo, Super Smash Bros. or Viva PiƱata? You get cool new stuff. Seems easy enough to me.
*In the interest of full disclosure, I've played offline Call of Duty 4. But I'd hardly consider myself a fan.

Couldn't agree more. So cloudy eyed Patcher says that Activision will be down 250m huh, could that be because they aren't launching Call of Duty MW2 this year? Way to go Patch, that is some top-notch analysis.

I'm already experiencing people that stopped playing MW2. Evidence is the 90-130ms latency and taking a while to find a game session. As a result, I went back to CoD4:MW

If a perk lets you run 50mph, stab people from 20ft away, while dual-wielding shotguns that require no aim from 100ft away, consider it one less copy sold here.

It's not a simulation game, guy. Play it b4 passing judgement. It's made to be FUN, not REALISTIC.
