I bet the sales boost is due to the new awesome advertisements. The reason the PS3 started out slow was because of those terrible ads. Now, however, NOW WE ARE TALKIN!!

The advertisements sure don't help.

I don't know why Sony didn't realize this, but some people didn't understand what a PS3 was. A David Lynch commercial won't tell them, either. The PS3 has really good features, and now that consumers are better informed about it, it's selling a lot better. This is not complicated stuff.

And there's nothing wrong with the 360, but I like the PS3's online experience much, much better. I know that's the opposite of internet wisdom, but I just find it easier to play online games, with fewer schreeching kids, and with better online games (imo) such as Warhawk. I actually like Home now, and I like the folding@home feature (with trailers or news and weather, it's a nice screen saver). I also don't mind the internet browser with Pandora.com over my sound system.

the 360 is obviously a great system too, but it's so much more expensive when you add in what it takes to have a full experience (in my opinion). I hope MS takes a cue from Sony and cuts their prices beyond the gimped console itself.

That has been the trend. But marketshare gain is far easier for the PS3, given that it was (and remains) in last place, while it is equally difficult for Wii, given that it needs to outsell PS3 and 360 together, whereas all PS3 needs to do is make sure that PS360 outsells Wii, and then they outsell 360 individually, and they get marketshare gain.

You r taking things for granted there mayhap, the alternative scenario could be staying in last place AND dying.

Anybody remember Lord Vesper? That uber troll who called every last person in here a racist "piece of shit 3" fanboy? I wish he were here right now. He would make this post sooooooo epic.

He was solely responsible for 4 - 5 page epics. I still think he was secretly an AOL employee adding hits to their pages >: )

i don't these analyses take into account market saturation and demographics. it's been proven that the majority of gamers are in their 20s and 30s, meaning most gamers earn their own income and have likely already purchased at least one console by this point. the numbers over the last few years showed the 360 selling better, so it's likely that the "first choice" for many was the 360. considering that this past year was the first year in which the 360 failed to sell more than the previous year, it's plausible that the market has somewhat become saturated with people planning to purchase a first console, that console more often being the 360.

another big factor in this is that gamers who earn their own income are probably more likely to not have to "choose" between competing consoles, and can afford both. now that PS3 has dropped in price and its value is more obvious, i'd wager that there's a lot of 360 owners out there "repeat purchasing" a console by getting a PS3 slim.

if any of this is true, then it might seem like PS3 is increasing in market share, but market share assumes that the market operates via mutually exclusive purchases, aka you buy one or the other. but my guess is that the market is changing such that owners of "core" consoles are more predisposed to owning both, so market share only says so much. it's like TV ratings.....if people could watch more than 1 channel at a time, then ratings would become worthless as a measure of how well a broadcasting company is doing.

What if someone owns 2 or more of a single system then? I think you are over complicating the issue. You should just count the units sold, or it would have to literally be a crime to own competing products, just so accountants can draw a cleaner line.

sorry but in latin america, especially mexico the xbox 360 is the choice, waiting almost 3 years so we could have our own store is lame.

I am from "latin america", even though I speak a latin language, I don't feel anything related to spanish speaking countries from the north.

Indeed, I got bored waiting for the 360 to be returned from RROD repair a while back, and decided to go ahead and get a PS3 and a couple of its exclusives (And there are several great PS3 exclusives that aren't as notorious as the great 360 exclusives). Now, I buy all multiplatforms on PS3 under the basic assumption the console will live much longer. I also really appreciate the quality of some PS3 games. They are delayed forever and I think the PS3 is probably a mess to dev for, but some of those games are really amazing, and I think the PS3 has the best exclusives at the moment.

But I would never have even bothered with my 360 had kept working.

I got a PS3 because all the 360 "exclusives" are pretty much playable on the PC, thus giving me no reason to pick one up. Aside from that, It's like comparing an emachine to a custom quality built computer, You can tell me that the 360 is better all you want because of it's online blahblah blibbity blah, but all I have to do is look under the hood to see that you guys are just stupid emachine zombies who are letting the embarrassment of buying the wrong system speak for them.

Now the question is, will ex-microsoft employee mr. Gabe Newell still ignore the growing oh so tempting PS3 market, or invest in some PS3 development classes for his developers?

MS is definitely better connected with English speaking media. No doubt about it. That BBC YLOD expose was really awful, but got a point across. When it comes to viral marketting, Sony is just not as good as MS.

There are a lot of little details to dealing with media that Sony screws up, and Ms gets right. MS is also better at making deals. You can see this all the time. Few Multiplatform games are even allowed to be better on PS3. That's smart lawyering by MS. Since they are allowed to be better on 360, and the systems aren't identical, that obviously leads to a lot of 360 games that are a little better.

We'll see if Sony ever catches up.

Yes, he will, but since Valve games are generally on the PC anyway (ex: Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2)

The only reason Valves games are even on the 360 is because it was easy to port the games to it. Valve is a PC developer, first and foremost. Taking on the PS3 would be a huge change in their tools and engine. I'll bet they'll include it when they finally make a new engine from scratch, but as long as the source engine is around the PS3 is more trouble than it's worth for a developer that's focus is PC development.

If you think Valve games being 360/PC exclusive have anything to do with MS, you're crazy.

That could be why HL2 E3 isn't out. If Gabe wants to tap the PS3 market, he needs a new engine, which means HL3.
