It always makes me a little happy to see that a game console can be so popular and enduring. I love games and talking about games, and the more people who can understand me, the better.

Sucks that the comments here will probably fill up with Wii hate and Wii fanboys. Why can't we all just get along?!?!

I'm with you on this one.

I don't care what people play or what they prefer, its nice being able to talk about video games to common non-gamers as they have something to relate to, whether its hardcore or casual ... its all good.

Considering people (soccer moms and grandmas) are still buying this, I'd say it's a smart decision by Nintendo. People are still getting it, even if it's at a slower pace.

I actully work for a retialer and I'm fine on the consoles, I'm just out of Remotes, Wii Play, NSMBW, Mario Kart, and the balance board. Most of this isn't expected to be relieved until arch.

Probably too busy making Wii systems to respond.

All the shortages are just publicity stunts. And Joystiq only fuels it by posting useless information like this. If Nintendo wanted them to be in stock, they would. They're just making them seem better by having it sold out everywhere.

Why is this guy being downvoted? The wii has survived on artificial stock shortages since it's launch. As someone posted below this gamestop is apparently getting very small shipments of Wii's and someone else has mentioned that Nintendo has scaled back production. Sales numbers have shown that the damand has been going down, but it's apparent that Nintendo overcompensated for this by scaling down the supply far too much.

I guess Nintendo saw their sales figures slowing down, so thought "We should slow down supply, like we did in 08, then maybe people will buy more"

I completely agree. There is no way they can't keep up with demand nearly 5 years after the thing came out. Nintendo is either very bad at numbers or very smart at keeping a mediocre product on everyone's must-have list.

I have one but play it about 1/10 as much as my 360. I only play 1st party games on my Wii and they come out very rarely.

If you barely play your Wii, why don't you...you know, just sell it? As you can see, there are people out there that are looking for one.

@Diodax

I would sell it except for the fact that every few months (years) a game like New Super Mario Bros. Wii comes along and justifies the purchase. I'm just saying there are about 80% more games at that playable tier on the 360 and it gets most of my playing time.

TvC is actually off to a rather good start, to the tune of about 100k, which is rather excellent considering:
1. It's a Versus game (which never tend to do too well)
2. It's a Versus game where few people know who the hell half the characters are
3. It's a traditional fighter on Wii (which has had very, very few of those)
4. It's been out for long enough in Japan that the dedicated fans probably imported already (though these same fans would probably be dedicated enough to buying it twice, especially with all the content added to Ultimate All Stars)

Let's see... This December 3.8 milion Wii's were sold in the US - an unprecedented number that no one anticipated. The previous console sales record was the PS2, 2.7 million sold in December 2002. So artificial shortages? Nonsense. If there is a shortage, it's a real one due to the unprecedented number of Wiis sold in December.

I am entirely certain that the 90% of these Wii seekers are in it solely for New Super Mario Bros. Wii. However good this game is (which it is, I have it), it's sad that No More Heroes 2, or House of the Dead Overkill, or even Klonoa will not see a home with these newly-sold Wiis. Why must it be only things involving Mario and Miis sell on the thin white beast?

Nintendo really did something right with this gaming system. People of all ages and walks of life are buying it because it makes you get up and move without really realizing that you are doing it. Elderly facility's are buying them to get there patients up and moving helping with arthritis bed sores and really quality of life. Moms don't mind getting them because it is something that the hole family can do. Changing the way family game night is done. I think it is awesome!. In the same breath Nintendo really needs to figure it out and produce more Wii's during high spending months.

Console sales =/= game sales. Most wii owners Only use their wii for first party Nintendo titles. I'm sure there's a large percentage of people who bought their wii with only wii fit and wii sports in mind.

Although it may be worth mentioning that, yes, the Wii is the most hackable thing since ever.* I can't remember anybody saying it's stopped them from publishing on Wii, but I can imagine it's not helping things.

*Note: Hyperbole.

@Acosta02

While this is true, it's not really a factor in developers leaving the wii. The DS, PSP, and 360 all have rampant piracy, but the sales are high as well so developers stick to them. MW2 was one of the most pirated games ever, but it was also one that made the most money. Developers won't leave a platform because of piracy, only because of poor sales.

And how do you propose they do that? Maybe by making new, fun games.

You know, like new installments in the Mario, Zelda, and Metroid franchises.

Wait, that's what they're doing.

That is not true. We are not getting Wii's. I am an assistant manager for GameStop and we have gotten one shipment of 3 wii's total for the last 3 - 4 weeks. We just started a reservation program because they are so scarce. Bestbuy, Wal-mart, Target, and GameStop in my area have been out of Wii's for a while. Nintendo just isn't sending them. Don't be fooled, demand is not higher. They are just very short supply. Xbox is rocking along nicely though. Selling many and getting plenty.

I'm not sure if the Wii scalpers are still around like they were in 2008, but if they want to curb these shortages, then they NEED to shut down the "Wii tracking" websites that list which online stores have it in stock, as those are more often being used for people buying and selling the thing at inflated prices.

Considering they still haven't done so (as far as I know), then they're most likely using the constant shortages in order to keep the item in high demand as long as possible. Nothing makes a consumer demographic want something more than a deficit of a hot product.
