Among the handful of
Ubiscoops about 2010's releases coming out of today's investor call, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot brought up the tactical Tom Clancy franchise
Ghost Recon. Beyond the already revealed platforms for
Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, Guillemot detailed the franchise's further ubiquity, saying the next
Ghost Recon game will "be on all platforms: 360, PS3, Wii, PSP, [and] DS." He noted that the Wii version of
Ghost Recon will "be done by a different team" with a "different approach ... created for that Wii population." Presumably, the game will involve standing on the balance board to approximate a sniper's breathing -- and it'll also be made up entirely of mini-games. Whoa, whoa -- calm down there killer. We're just joshin' ya!
He also confirmed something we've been mentioning for months now: "There will be more competition in the first eight months than in the last four." Get your calculators and spreadsheets out, folks --
early 2010 is gonna be a bruiser like we've never seen before (on our bank accounts, that is).

"He noted that the Wii version of Ghost Recon will "be done by a different team" with a "different approach ... created for that Wii population.""
And that's why it's gonna flop.
Bradwart @ Feb 9th 2010 2:08PM
Wait, so because Ubisoft is building the game around the Wii, it's going to flop?
samfish @ Feb 9th 2010 2:11PM
with a "different approach ... created for that Wii population."
michael @ Feb 9th 2010 2:22PM
How do you even know that. You don't even know if the Wii version may do well or not.

It worked for Dead rising.
TwEE...Nintendo is DOOOMED!! @ Feb 9th 2010 2:33PM
I meant dead space, but dead rising works as well.

+1

When they make these hardcore games so they try to please both hardcore and casual gamers (ignoring the fact that those definitions are...stupid), they ultimately please no one. Sales reflect that.
Scuffles @ Feb 9th 2010 2:55PM
~.~ a different development team ...... no words in the engligh language short of the use of the word flavored (EG Chocolate flavored candy) send such a cold chill through me :(
Also you left out the part where they bitch endlessly about the poor sales that are a direct result of their muddled attempt to cobble together a game and subsequent use of that poor attempt at a games failure to label the entire playerbase because after all the game was FREAKING AWESOME (their moms said it was!!!1!)
I look forward to the fiasco
Tigre @ Feb 9th 2010 2:58PM
It'd probably fail regardless. The good news is that its coming in some capacity.
DBuck_Eye @ Feb 9th 2010 3:10PM
And that's why they are gonna say hardcore games don't work on the Wii.
Spartan [Planteer | Power of The Arduous Task of Smiting Kittens] @ Feb 9th 2010 5:17PM
"created for that Wii population"
CONFIRMED:
dumbed-down graphics
downgraded sound
No online multiplayer
reduced violence
Debikul @ Feb 9th 2010 2:06PM
I'm not hating on the Wii, but it doesn't seem like it would be worth it to bring the game to the console. Especially in light of recent higher profile games that have made the jump and have come up short. It if doesn't come from 1st party Nintendo then it doesn't really stand a chance.
Cody @ Feb 9th 2010 2:38PM
Fairly certain they are bringing this to Wii in light of the Call of Duty franchise successes on WIii, which are hardly coming up short.
Bradwart @ Feb 9th 2010 2:06PM
Alas, no PS2 support.
Gunther Hermann @ Feb 9th 2010 2:10PM
Why would you be worried about PS2 support?
Bradwart @ Feb 9th 2010 2:12PM
Why WOULDN'T I be worried? It's the best selling console ever!
Gunther Hermann @ Feb 9th 2010 2:15PM
Um, weren't you the sperglord who was telling everyone to get with the times and buy an HD TV?
Surely you can see the blatant contradic- oh wait no, I'm talking to Bradwart. haha, silly me
Bradwart @ Feb 9th 2010 2:17PM
I play my PS2 over component.
And I was referring to seventh-generation console owners, not console owners in general.
Gunther Hermann @ Feb 9th 2010 2:21PM
Get with the times braaaadwaaaart and buy a PS3 already, prfff what a grandpa. (btw nice Dreamcast Half-Life avatar, too bad it's infantile garbage compared to the PC version)
Bradwart @ Feb 9th 2010 2:26PM
That's your opinion. The Dreamcast version is just fine, though the PS2 version is better thanks to far improved graphics (even better than the High Definition Pack on PC), plus it includes HL Decay.
Kleptomaniac @ Feb 9th 2010 3:07PM
Brad didn't you say before that you haven't even finished any of the half life games?:S
Bradwart @ Feb 9th 2010 3:11PM
Have them, just haven't finished them.
CaramelZappa @ Feb 9th 2010 3:24PM
Lol, Badwart thinks that the PS2 version of HL is superior to the PC version.
Enjoy your 480p.
Bradwart @ Feb 9th 2010 3:38PM
And people wonder why PC gamers are considered elitist snobs...
CaramelZappa @ Feb 9th 2010 3:44PM
Alright. Here.
The PC version allows you to render at whatever resolution you see fit. Which is a huge improvement.
You can also use anti-aliasing. Which is a huge improvement.
You can also put any number of mods or custom textures in to change the look of the game, which is a huge improvement.
Not only that, but the original Half-Life engine is still being updated, something you don't get with the PS2 version.
Nevermind that the PC has HL source which has the game running in a far superior engine.
Don't get me wrong, as far as PC-to-console ports go the PS2 version of HL is fantastic. Gearbox did a great job. But to say it's superior because of a few textures is just silly.
Spaz @ Feb 9th 2010 2:24PM
What they need is the Wii 360 degree treadmill - would be great to fully simulate this game and just another step into working off America's handlebars and manboobs.
MrAlex @ Feb 9th 2010 2:43PM
Working off a handlebar?
I didn't know exercise removed facial hair...

" He noted that the Wii version of Ghost Recon will "be done by a different team" with a "different approach ... created for that Wii population."
So.....basically an on-rails game or a collection of minigames....
*Sigh*

I think this could go either way with "will be done by a different team". It works for Infinity Ward and Treyarch when it comes to the CoD games. And Treyarch just seems to keep getting better with each one (WaW and MW:R are both good games that IW would insist couldn't be done on the Wii). So I shall wait and see what will come of this before making a decision one way or another.
Drewcifer @ Feb 9th 2010 5:00PM
I'm glad you pointed out that IW kept strutting around, saying the Wii versions couldn't be done. I enjoyed both, and still do.
Brian @ Feb 9th 2010 11:40PM
Agreed. I'm looking forward to the next CoD announcement on Wii. I'm not sure Ubisoft will be able do the same thing, though. I'm hoping for the best. Don't forget Ubisoft has given Wii owners No More Heroes.
Drewcifer @ Feb 9th 2010 5:05PM
"[...]and will be created for the Wii population."
This means there will be two possibilities:
1. This will be another Guitar Hero World Tour, where the "Big Boy" console versions aren't as good as the Wii version. Vicarious Visions created a game that played to the Wii's strengths, and instead of sitting on their duffs, they milked what they could from the hardware and software.
2. This will end up like most multi-platform releases, with the Wii development being underfunded, understaffed, and handled by a team that could care less about what they're doing.
I truly hope that the first possibility becomes reality. The Wii CAN handle a game like this, just not exactly in the same way as a PS360 (Different maps for different draw distances, or high-contrast textures that don't require too much processing but still convey visual info and look decent, etc... just like Metroid Prime 3...). Personally, I like using the wiimote to control FPSs, so if this game gets the attention and polish it deserves (and the gamers deserve), it could be quite good.
But I have to admit, that's a pretty big "if". I can dream.
gatotsu911 @ Feb 9th 2010 7:51PM
This, in its entirety. I would love for this game - a serious shooter - to receive the attention it deserves to make it work as a quality game on the Wii, but sadly I'm not holding my breath.
Mr. Fister @ Feb 9th 2010 9:37PM
...um, how is the Wii version of Guitar Hero: World Tour better then the PS360 versions?
I'm not disagreeing with you, I just want you to elaborate.
Breakerchase @ Feb 9th 2010 5:39PM
Sigh, Ghost Recon has really been dumbed down ever since the release of that great tactical shooter back in 2001.
Drewcifer @ Feb 9th 2010 11:14PM
Sorry for not explaining, before: I used the term "better" to refer to the fact that VV added extra content and system-specific goodies that the other versions weren't sporting (or even tried to), and it attained more of an individual technical achievement (SD access/streaming without fridge-cleaning, always-connected, etc.) than it's bigger brothers did on the other two consoles (they didn't bring anything special to the table). Simply, the Wii version upped the ante and pushed the system-boundaries, and the others didn't.
Also, if you compare GHWT to RB2 on each system, individually, I think it's safe to say that what VV did was make a "better" product through their work (I don't think WT is as much fun as RB2 on PS360), compared to the "stock" game on the PS360 seen in context with RB2.
Technically, yes, the other versions are HD, have the disk support (instead of an SD card), but for a true evolution of the experience and a commitment to giving gamers something new and fun, I think the Wii version of GHWT is "better".
For the sake of being as fair as I can, I do have to admit that requiring four wiimotes is horrible (compared to RB2). As far as I understand, though, Nintendo wanted all the music games to use wiimotes; RB2 didn't follow the rules, and GHWT did, to their loss.
This is all opinion, though, so I'll shut up. Haha.
TM @ Feb 9th 2010 11:26PM
All I ask is that this team put some real effort into the psp version. The last Ghost Recon 2 port was miserable.
