Awesome? Is that why it's already on $20 clearance in Japan? That must be why it's being ridiculed for being way too linear? I mean I had high hopes for this game but I have more faith in Final Fantasy XIII Versus, I think it's because I love the Kingdom Hearts team.

I doubt it. I enjoyed FFVII - FFIX when I was in middle school. But as I started getting older I realized how silly those stories were. FFX made me realize that when I was a sophomore in high school. That game had no likable characters, cheesy voice acting, and over the top cutscenes/plot.

I'm still going to get XIII because I managed to pre-order a copy for $37, but I doubt it will be as fun as other recent RPGs.

Regardless of that fact, it has still has had an astounding amount of criticism leveled towards it from fans of the series (more than I recall any other FF game getting) due to its linearity and, supposedly (as it all is at this stage for us Westerners), a really dull story

Its going to tarnish japanese games pretty badly. Its already being out sold by really old games in Japan because word is getting out that it sucks and people shouldnt buy it.

Japanese games are criticized lately mostly for being brainless and linear, and FF13 is the epitome of those things. It is ridiculously linear, so linear that japan doesnt even like it, now THATS freakin linear. This game is japans most expensive blockbuster and it represents everything thats wrong with what japanese games have become, thats not a good thing.

After RE5 bombed critically japans only remaining superstars that can help the industry are Kojima and Team ICO.

I love how Final Fantasy is the only series that everyone forms an opinion on before playing it in English.

I find it hilarious. But, I guess that's what happens when you've been in the business longer than most people commenting on this article have been alive.

You're in "the business"? And which "business" is that?

Also, the implication you're older than the average Joystiq commenter sends chills down my spine.

@Eh

Yeah FFXIII is linear. (Except for Chapter 11)
Its not a JRPG like in the old days, where you can travel to dungeons or village that you want to go to.
But I don't think "linear" means "bad", for a game.
Because awesome games like Uncharted are also linear.
And action games besides Uncharted are also linear.
Its how action games are.

But, if you mean its bad for a "JRPG", yes that maybe true.
But FFX was also very linear too.
(Except in FFX you could head back. There isn't any going-back in FFXIII)

The game system (battle, level up, EXP) is RPG based,
but the game architecture(?) is more like an action game,
like story-telling based, with Chapters.

Just to note, I have played the game.
How much I've played that game? Only 2 trophies left to platinum.

And it's stuff like that I hear which worries me even more about this game. Fair enough if you like it, but I gotta admit that that description doesn't really sound like something that makes me excited for a JRPG Final Fantasy title. How do you find the story fares?

Although, I guess according to the seasoned veteran Wiizer I should just block out everyone's opinion until I buy it and play it for myself. Be nice if the world worked that way, but I try not to buy blindly on brand name alone. I'll wait for the Western reviews and see what the general feel of it is for non-japanese JRPG fans before deciding whether to spend my money on it or not.

@Crayfish

Like I said, if your expecting a JRPG Final Fantasy like the old days,
you may not going to like it, it may not be for you. (Just a speculation)
The game is really story based until the Chapter 11 and I think this is making the game linear and gamers get divided here, wether they like it or not.
FFXIII especially really depends on your personal taste for likes and dislikes, IMHO. So don't rely on peoples opinions, including me, especially for this game.

And about the story, I don't want to give any spoilers,
but most people in Japan have opinions that the plot is confusing at the end.
Which means, not enough explanation.

10 hours of 1080p cutscenes sounds impressive, and explains why it takes up so much space.

"Will there be a hard drive install available?

There is no installation, the game runs directly from the disc."

Some discs make more noise due to poor optimization or just needing a lot of data to be read. Demon's Souls made some noise in my unit, as did WaW.

"10 hours of cutscenes sounds..."

I realize that personal preference comes into play here, but "impressive" is not the word that I was going to use to complete that sentence.

Let me put it this way. If you are going to introduce 10 hours of non-interactive content into the experience, then the quality of the characters/dialog/acting needs to be "good for a Hollywood production", not "good for a videogame".

There's some compression on the PS3 version, and severe compression on the 360 version (not to mention 720p max). Early reviews of the 360 version I've seen say it looks far inferior to the PS3 version.

Cutscenes =/= FMVs. Cutscenes include using in-game engine. Think all of FFX and FFXII's cutscenes were done with in game engine. I'm sure XIII is the same.

In which case, yes, 10 hours of 1080p video WILL fight on a single 50gb Blu-Ray disc.

Call of Duty? The games I want Square Enix to look at are Fallout, Dragon Age and Mass Effect. My problem with JRPGs in the post- Xenogears and FF9 era are linear gamepaths, fantasy tropes driven into the ground, and abysmal voice acting.

Yeah, Mass Effect 2 wasn't even out for them to look at. Also, you don't think Mass Effect 2's main plot is pretty linear?

I read an interview where if Shepard dies in 2, you won't be able to move over your save data.

There HAS to be some sort of linearity to make a cohesive story in RPG's. It's like LBP:

If everyone got to 'choose their adventure', the game would not be as good of an experience for each playthrough.

I will say this, after playing Heavy Rain, I totally have a new opinion on branching dialogue. With each game, storytelling improves.

If everyone didnt get to "choose their own adventure" then there would be no real reason to play through again at all dumbsh!t.

"Producers: Final Fantasy XIII will 'resurrect' Japanese game industry"

Its good to have dreams.

Right now i look to EU,and the US to sate my gaming needs. At the age of 30 i've done the whole Japanophile thing since my pre-teenage years and boy am i over it.

Many of the top titles i have enjoyed up until now have nothing to do with the Japanese industry. All i see from them are delays *COUGH-GT5-FF13-COUGH!* and when the product drops its like, what?

Titles such as, the Left 4 Dead series, Mass Effect, Forza, Dragon Age, MW2, World of Warcraft. ( yeah i live there as well)...Either are keeping me way too busy or will be once i purchase them.

Hopefully the "industry resurrects", but i am surely not going to hold my breath...

While I'm with you, the Japanese have produced some good things. Mostly fringe titles from people like From Software, though Capcom is also doing really well. Dead Rising, the new Megaman games, and Street Fighter IV have lived up fairly well to their legacies.

By no means a Japanophile, though I do appreciate quality wherever it happnes to spring up.

The next Gran Turismo and the next Final Fantasy will give a sales boost to the Japanese gaming industry, but it is not going to resurrect it. It is not going to turn the clock 15-20 years to the time when we all looked to the East to find the next fresh, exciting thing in gaming.

Western studios like Bioware, Valve, Naughty Dog, and Harmonix have been leading the game industry forward over the last few years by publishing fun, ambitious, creative games that don't feel like the same thing we've already played.

What Japanese games have been competing this way? Demon's Souls, Super Mario Galaxy. Arguably casual titles like Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit. So basically, Miyamoto + Demon's Souls.

GT5 and FF13 have spent years and years in development, and look very nice in hi-def for the efforts. But there are no indications that either title is taking a step forward in gameplay, and MGS4 took a big step backward.

Japanese studios dominated gaming two decades ago. Why can't any studio head other than Nintendo make the investment to go head to head with the Western studios on innovation today?

Everything is cyclical. Look at Nintendo's rise-fall-rise (Nes/Snes - N64/Cube - Wii), western games (Atari) or hell, even the gaming industry itself (early 80's).

As for holding your breath, I wouldn't. Like you've already mentioned, why hold your breath for Japanese developers when American and (especially) European / Canadian development have been exceptional lately.

In japan, game rentals aren't really a big deal so people buy games, beat them, and trade them in a lot more often. Because of that the "Final fantasy trade in market" is saturated
