So...why are they doing this, for free? Are they trying to get enough subscribers to get to premium (paid) content? I don't understand free-to-play-and-not-cash-item MMOs at all (like D and D, does that have premium items or services?) A third shot at success just seems too many for an MMO (a game genre mostly designed to bore the hell out of their player and squeeze their money). They better cherish their luck.

It's free because the fans really wanted to continue playing online with each other. There isn't and won't be a subscription, micro-transactions for items, or ads (@Levi). In fact, the plan is to open source as much of the tools and engine as possible so that players can create their own ages and puzzles.

Well there can only be so many ads in a game before fans start vehemently complaining. "They're doing it for free just for the fans" sounds good, but I'm more than likely to trust that they have ulterior motive than plain altruism (Or people would have kept Tabula Rasa and Hellgate open).

It's going to be free, which means it will probably close in a year or less.

Technically, it's only been two. The first time it was planned to be the multiplayer part of a game, and wasn't an MMO, but was never released. The second time, it failed.

they weren't kidding when they said their signup page was getting hammered... it doesn't load at all for me, let alone take too long.

This was fun back in the day - I played it both when it came out the first time and again on Gametap (the only reason I bothered signing up for it to play, actually)...

MO:UL really isn't for everyone. If you want action, you'll want to move on. This is a thinking and reasoning man's (not to be gender-exclusive, it's just a phrase) MMOG; I like the fast paced battle as much as the next person, but I never touched the Myst series for THAT reason... Myst was appealing because it forced me to think about the puzzles it presented.

To address Reinhart directly, I'll just say that - being part of the community who enjoys these games - Uru, conceptually, isn't really about money; it's about a community, about exploration and ultimately about friendships. Cyan Worlds is working to make the game open source so that the users can create their own content and worlds for everyone to play in... it's a labor of love on their part, and a bit of the same for the people who understand the draw of the genre. That's not to discount the need for server upkeep and the like, but that donation button will get pressed more often than you may think because there are a LOT of people who actually want and have wanted this game to succeed for many, many years. I'm optimistic at least.

So, everyone, don't knock it before you try it, but DO try it. If you don't like it then don't play it, but at least give it a chance before you write it off as boring or worthless, especially with the stigmas that exist regarding things that are Free to Play... this was a commercial product before it was free. Here's hoping their servers get back under control, because I'm looking forward to hopping back into the caverns again.

Fair enough, I didn't know it was more adventure game than action and grinding game (which MMOs mostly are).

Here's my reply to other people's reply to my post (in case you don't see it up there):

"Well there can only be so many ads in a game before fans start vehemently complaining. "They're doing it for free just for the fans" sounds good (and I'd like that), but I'm more than likely to trust that they have ulterior motive than plain altruism (Or people would have kept Tabula Rasa and Hellgate open)."

Guess I've just been burned too many times.

I just wish they would release more books set within the universe. I found the entire series' world highly intriguing and would like the setting to be even more fleshed out if possible.

For some reason I feel like this time it's going to work out in a long tail. Or long tale.

I'm glad they're still supporting this I'd rather they sink the money into remaking Myst 5.

The game was great.....the first time. I really wanted it to continue. There were just too many bugs with it. Then they didn't add any content. How many times am I forced to play the same puzzles over and over again before they add new stuff?

That's why it's not succeeding. MMOs need something to do......if your main goal is to solve puzzles, you need lots of puzzles ("missions") to solve. Just letting people run around in this world with nothing to do just turns into a chat room. At least in other MMOs you can run around and shoot things to increase your level and feel like you are accomplishing *something*.

I'll be back if they start adding more fun puzzles instead of making me play through the same world for a third time.
