I hope they do it again. It got me to buy Pokemon Rumble (even with the $15 price tag), and next time I get a Nintendo Points card I'm picking up Nyx Quest.

Everything's limited with Nintendo these days. The pedometer thing on the new Pokemon will probably be a limited thing, too.

I'm thinking that the pedometer will only come packaged with initial shipments of the game, eventually being sold separate at some point.

The main reason I don't buy more downloadable titles is lack of a demo. I don't want to waste 10-15 dollars on something I might hate that has NO resale value.

my reason is that i've just learned the downloads are tied to the purchasing console. period. i don't think most people realize you can't simply (or easily) move them to a different wii if yours dies. it should be much, much more clearly stated upfront. and after what microsoft has pulled with their virtual arcade, it's naive to think this anti-consumer trend is limited to nintendo.

Seriously! They really need to pull their heads out of their asses. I blatantly refuse to support Nintendo products anymore. The Wii my in-laws bought the kids for Christmas sits on my TV stand like a cancer. I can't think of a single company that is more out of touch with their core consumer than Nintendo.

Protip: Soccer moms aren't buying WiiWare games. You know who is? US. The people who are really into gaming (even 'casual' type gamers can fall into this if they're on friggin' Joystiq), and you know what we're all asking for? Frigging demos!

I can't even begin to count all the demos I've tried out XBLM titles. And you know what? I've purchased games that I absolutely never would have without a demo MANY times.

Dear Nintendo, 1999 called. It wants it's online gaming service back.

And I've not bought a LOT of games because of the demos, especially community and XBLA games.

In fact, I've bought exactly 1 game based on the demo--Arkham Asylum. The videos made it look much less interesting than it was.

Not entirely certain who's buying these WiiWare games, given that Hudson's "My Aquarium" has sat on top of the charts for so long

There is some question about whether Nintendo is "out of touch with their core consumer," either. Certainly they are out of touch with the hobbyist gamer whose demand has driven all of the features of the PS3/360, but you would presume that if they were doing something wrong, there would be some sort of indicator, and that could explain why they haven't changed their practices. Their online system isn't hurting sales, the lack of demos probably is, the lack of space definitely was, but Nintendo hasn't been clearly demonstrated on the fronts where they are the most out-of-touch (namely their archaic online structure, as well as the question of adding multimedia convergence features) that they are behind the times at all, because their sales haven't really been hurt, as near as can be seen anyway

Nintendo is in the peculiar position of being able to get away with making games that lack features that most publishers take for granted, and not only get away with it, but make mad bank doing it (see: NSMBWii. What exactly could they have gained by adding online to that? The damn thing sold 10 million in two months anyway)

tl;dr, Nintendo hasn't been shown the benefit to "getting with the times," and given the successes of their products, both casual and core, it really can't be demonstrated that they are out of touch with *their* core consumer. The lack of features only seems to further alienate marginal consumers, and not their dedicated buyers

I was kinda hoping an english version of the Phoenix Wright demo Japan got would make it over here when the game came out, but whatever.

Last I checked, the demos still work if you still have them on your Wii/SD card. That doesn't mean you shouldn't buy them though, all of them were some of the best WiiWare games available.

Actually the Shop Channel did make some mention of it ending sometime around Christmas. I can't remember the wording they used: there was no fixed date. I think it said something like "Until around Christmas 2009"

Oddly enough, North America was the only one to not give the cutoff date. Both Europe and Japan said Jan. 31.

XBLA titles must have a playable demo. Retail games are NOT required to have a demo.

Get it? Good.

I find it quite hilarious that Nintendo, a company with boatloads upon boatloads of money, can't afford to host 100 MB (at best) demos of their titles on the service for more than a couple months.

Its not that they can't afford it, they're just testing the waters, is what I'm thinking..If sales went up on the wiiware games that had demos then expect more demos, if sales went down then don't hold your breath.

100 MBs? The full-sized games themselves cannot be any larger than 42 MBs. Server bandwidth certainly shouldn't be an issue

I wonder if the demos had a sales impact. Perhaps they're merely assessing the results of the trial period, and will move on to something more permanent, or perhaps it merely wasn't working for whatever reason.

Demos are a great idea for WiiWare titles, especially since a lot of them are original, unproven ideas, but if they weren't making any difference in sales, this move could be understood.

They have a measurement they use called, "conversion rate".

LIVE! was touting conversion rates for the first 3 years almost religiously throughout the 360's life. Geometry Wars was always used as the poster child for conversion rate.

I'm sure Nintendo is using the same metric.

Hopefully, Nintendo will decide on continuing making demos for WiiWare. It really helps people decide on getting a game or not, & I hope they realize that from the sales/downloads.

Nintendos next peripheral attachment will be the E-Demo-Reader. You will have to buy demo "cards" each priced at $4.99 a pack.

Seriously, why wouldn't you want your consumers to try out a new game? You get people excited to download it, and then they start talking with their friends about said game. Word of mouth still works, it's just been updated to include a keyboard.
Unless of course all you put out is rehashes and garbage, then I guess you would want the general populous to stumble on it like an ill-placed landmine.

While it's true that the demos were always labeled as "limited time", that is a horrible way to do business and taking down demos is just going to hurt wiiware sales.

I'm sick of all these game companies messing around with their customers like this. Why can't the customer try before he buys? The only reason why any company would not want this is to trick people into buying junk games. A customer should not have to be tricked to get his money. Combine this with the blatant abuse of the DLC concept and gaming is losing the respect of veteran gamers like myself (since NES 1985). Gaming for me has died with this generation of systems and I feel sorry for the people who never will know a world where buying a game wasn't a gamble (you could ALWAYS rent a physical game) and buying a game wasn't a multi-year contract to keep buying content to make your game "complete".

In all seriousness: Yes. There are a ton of Wiiware games, just barely half of them are any good. BARELY half. ...or less than.

Either way, there's a lot of WiiWare, some say there's no good ones, but there are more than they think, but there's less than optimists think. .....yeaaahhh...

I agree with everyone's frustrations. I downloaded World of Goo, Pokemon, and NyxQuest demoes and had a great time with all three. I didn't buy any of them because I thought it would show the big "N" that I wanted more demoes. In retrospect, it probably just shows I'm a demo junkie. I have to face facts that Nintendo is not Sony or Microsoft. Nintendo is not going to try and compete with them on their turf. Nintendo has always done things their own way. I respect that, but it is also the reason I bought a PS3. This is the first generation that I have owned two consoles. I find that I'm looking forward to more and more PS3 releases and fewer Wii releases. Demoes are big part of that.

@Brysonial the Bison - Considering that the Mario Party games haven't evolved in any major way since the first one, I'm sure Nintendo would much rather you pay $50 for Mario Party 8 than $15 for Mario Party 1, 2, or 3. I'd tend to assume that has a lot to do with the fact that none of the MP games are on VC yet.
