Question: Do you need knowledge of the past two Yakuza games to enjoy this one?

I haven't played them, and doubt that I ever will. But.. this one looks good..

Yes it's best for you to have played the previous games. The series is really story-heavy and also the first two games are too good to be missed in the first place.

As far as the story goes. you can just catch up on it by viewing the videos in-game of the past 2 games before you start playing Yakuza 3. but if you can find the first 2 games do it!

*SPOILERS I guess*

I heard there is a graveyard to visit in the game where you select from 2 tombstones and that is where you can view the 2 previous story vids.

It's too bad that the other two ps2 games won't be bundled the same as the God of War Collection...

(I have those, but I haven't played them yet).

This was already a day 1 purchase and now it's a no brainer. Besides, since I picked up MAG now I decided not to get BFBC2 and that opens up room for another purchase.

I nearly fell outta my seat when I heard that Sega had finally announced that this game was coming over here. I'm glad we're getting some free DLC with it. I hope the game does well enough that Sega will bring Yakuza 4 to the states. I can't wait to play this. March is going to be a killer year for my wallet.

Well even with my growing backlog of games after reading this I bought Yakuza and Yakuza 2.

Hopefully I will like them both enough in time to preorder this one.

Careful playing Yakuza 1 on the PS3. There's at least one scene like 3/4's through that freezes the game. I had to pop it in my PS2 and transfer the save to get through it.

It's a good franchise, and it deserves more success than it's received in the States, but they aren't doing it any favours with that ghastly cover art for this third installment.

Fck pre-order bonuses. I'd even pay for them if I could get the game whenever I wanted, from whichever store I wanted.

alright alright somebody please answer this...

i read somewhere on joystiq that yakuza 3 is gonna be english only and won't give you the option to put japanese dialogue with english subtitles... now if you've played yakuza 1, you know that spells disaster....

can anybody confirm this? english dub means off limits for me.

That's interesting and I hadn't heard that. From what I understood localization only consisted of sub titles with no English dubbing.

Ironically, there are tons of people in various blogs/forums that clearly said they won't be buying this game if there's no English audio. That shows you how the mentality of US gamers in general. So you might be right, Sega might just decide to release the US version with English dub only (based on popular demand).

Yakuza 1 spells success as far as dubs go, SEGA went all out with casting the dub. Definitely one of the better ones, to the point where I was almost disappointed they opted to just go with subtitles in the localized Yakuza 2.

Obviously the original language is better, but to give credit where it's due, Yakuza's voice acting was good.

Don't know the answer to your question unfortunately, but if the cover art is any indication of the effort they are putting into the NA release, they didn't bother localizing it beyond the text and subtitles.

@Granger: Sure, the dub can be as good as they are, but Japanese Yakuzas talking in English? Really? Have you tried watching, oh let's say, Harry Potter in Japanese? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwvXIwhEqZI It's just not right.

"Obviously the original language is better" - Did you miss that part?

Film dubbing is a much more devious act than game dubbing anyways, IMO. Yakuza is one of those exceptions because of its setting, but as long as the VO is good I'm not going to complain (especially considering that more often than not, the original language VO isn't worth writing home about either even if it may be more 'natural' - Language barriers and differences have no control over poor acting talent).

i dont know guys. i feel like i can connect more with the characters when they speak as who they are meant to be. its like watching inglorious basterds, you just love the foreign languages all put into some of the best written characters, and you're glad it was nothing like Valkyrie (which is still good btw).

i guess let's just hope that english and japanese will be available, with subtitles and captions for the dubbing.

Having played Yakuza 1 and being 10 hours into Yakuza 2 I could definitely use a "Yakuza Who's Who" guide to the characters. They introduce so many effing clan bosses and sub bosses I never know who I'm actually supposed to remember.
