This week's Famitsu (via Andriasang) confirms Capcom's Lost Planet 2 will include offline split-screen co-op when it releases May 18. Series producer Jun Takeuchi told Joystiq last year at GamesCom that the developer was working on couch co-op for the game, which already features four player online co-op.
The split screen will reportedly be similar to Resident Evil 5's staggered screens, maintaining the aspect ratio and cutting down on the hardware requirements. So, go ahead and play Lost Planet 2 snuggled with a buddy on the couch or drinking beers with the spouse when it releases ... wait, reverse that.

While WAW split screen did suck because of the way it was set.
For RE5 it depended on the way you had the output.
If you changed it to fullscreen I believe on the 360 it did the regular split in the middle. Widescreen made it the weird set up.

It's sad that we have to wait for an announcement to know whether or not a game has split-screen multiplayer.
That said, very glad this game includes it.

Agreed.
I really hate how games Dev's have started cutting out Split-Screen in Games.
It especially irks me in Games that are more than capable of handling split-screen yet the only way to play coop or MP is online.

Online multiplayer is supposed to compliment splitscreen, not replace it.

I really don't think it's as rare as you guys are making it out to be. Halo, Gears, Call of Duty, Army of Two, Borderlands, GRAW, L4D, R6, etc... All these series have local split screen. Then you have all the games like the LEGO, MUA, Rock Band, GH, etc... series that have same screen local co-op.

The more recent COD games do NOT have local split-screen, Vidikron.

I've put more hours into MW2 Split-Screen Adversarial Multiplayer than I have online (of which I've probably put about one hour into). It just don't want to have to work to get all the stuff I've already unlocked in Split-Screen and have become accustomed to.
MW2 definitely has split-screen, supports four players. Highrise and Rust ftw split-screen win.

I think the follow up question to this would be:
Can the "guest" player also log into their account and gain their separate trophies/achievements?
I'm all for local co-op, don't get me wrong. I just think it'll be harder to sell for me to let my girlfriend play on the same screen for hours on end (since this is basically monster hunter in space for me) without much "reward".

So playing with someone else isn't rewarding unless you're both getting achievements?
What happened to playing games for the game itself?
That said most splitscreen games I've played on the 360 give each user their own achievements so I wouldn't be worried about it. Not sure about the PSN Trophies, only have one ps3 controller.

It still hung around last gen, especially with the Xbox and popularity of LAN parties, but the switch to online seems to have killed it.

Why do I have this feeling that one reason we have been seeing the decline of split-screen multiplayer is so that MS at least can sell everyone a console and then charge them to play with each other online when before, everyone would go to a friend's house and play on one system?

I see the logic but I think it's being pretty paranoid. We're seeing the same decline in split-screen co-op on ps3 games. And MS owned ip's like Halo and Gears still support split-screen play, it seems to be the third parties that are neglecting it the most.
I think it has more to do with managing resources, and developers unwilling to make graphical cuts in order to make it run smoothly in split-screen. I'm assuming it's easier to integrate online co-op/multiplayer than it is to scale down the engine to be able to support 2-4 players. So developers say hey, we have online co-op, that's good enough.
This is just my guess though. You'd really have to ask the game devs.

Be careful when you talk bad about Microsoft.
You do have a point though, I remember playing Call of Duty (I forgot which one) on my 360 with a friend and being able to play on Live....
It didn't take long to cut that feature out. I was actually looking forward to that when I bought MW2.

Oh man, the lack of split screen in MW2 is infuriating. I had a few friends over a while back and thought hey, lets all play some MW2. Nope. It's a multiplayer game you can't play with your friends.
Which makes me think, another possible line of motivation for taking out split-screen is to sell more copies of games. Two people who share games and hang out playing split-screen all day together are only going to spend $60 on MW2 instead of $120, so taking it out doubles their profits, at least for those groups of people.

I just feel that gaming, especially console gaming, has become more like Hollywood. Its become more mainstream, more popular, more accepted. But its also become more cash-grubbing, commercialized and soulless as a result.
I wouldn't put it past Microsoft and others to kill the era of when we went to our friend's house to play splitscreen games and now we have to buy our own consoles and pay for online just for more cash in their already fat pockets.
Microsoft would also love to kill off PC gaming. Their wet dream is for all PC gamers to trash their rigs and buy their console with its closed off proprietary system with no mods but plenty of paid DLC instead, paid online, overpriced peripherals, etc.

Yep, almost forgot that now everyone will need to buy their own console, online subscription and copy of the game instead of meeting at one person's house to play. I'm not sure that's worth the cost of gaining more viewing space on the TV and you still have a different experience with friends in the same room than being on the mic. I guess I'm just some old geezer timing coot that way.

INSTA-BUY!
Listen here game publishers, I require REAL local split screen campaign. Not, stupid vs mode. Or survival or any of that dumb stuff. Let me do the campaign with a friend on one tv! I don't care if the story doesn't make sense with 2 people, IT'S FUN!
To all those people who are like "I like having my own tv, just get two 360s and do a systemlink", well screw you buddy. I'm not made of money or tvs!

For my case, there is no point in utilizing the option of playing local split screen if I don't have anyone dedicated to play beside me ;)
I gotta "sell" the game beyond its concept and align them with her gaming expectations, which happens to include trophies.
I know RE:5 on the PS3 you couldn't get simultaneous achievements. If a game like Castle Crashers on the 360 can implement multiple accounts, I am not sure why some games don't offer the same flexibility. Then again, it could also be a console issue.

If it's only 2 player split screen then it's still fail. The point is 4 player split screen. You don't make that distinction in the article and it needs to be said.
