Halo: Reach beta dated May 3, only for ODST owners

With the X10 event underway in San Francisco, Microsoft has finally announced the first details surrounding the Halo: Reach multiplayer beta. The beta test will officially begin on May 3, 2010. As promised, owners of Halo 3: ODST will be able to access the beta through the ODST game disc.

We'll have more details about the beta shorty. For now, sit tight and direct your attention on that new box art!

Yeah, but when I bought inFamous I had no idea it even came with a Beta

No it isn't. If you're gonna be an ass about it and still say ODST is an expansion, then at the very worst it was a 30 dollar beta. But, it wasn't. So shut up

Don't forget this probably won't be the only way to receive this beta; For Halo 3 I was invited to the "Friend's and Family" pre-beta testing program (Only about 3 days in advance of the public beta launch) and has four invites from multiple sources by the time the beta actually launched. Bungie is usually pretty good about giving their audience multiple ways to get their grubby, blueberry-top filled hands on their Beta's.

There was a time a beta was for working out bugs, not to provide a demo, and not a paid demo.

That's exactly what the Halo 3 beta did, it resulted in a lot of direct changes. Don't see why this should be any different, but I agree... It's starting to get that way. World @ War's beta was like three weeks before ship date, and the game still launched with more bugs and glitches than I've yet experienced in any online console MP game - most of which were discovered in the "beta."

it isn't a paid demo. You paid 60 dollars for ODST, dont be an asshole about it. This is still going to be used for testing as well. Did you ever read anything about the Halo 3 beta? Judging from your post, probably not because there are things that are considerably different between H3beta and H3 final.

World at War was the king of glitchy games. I got to round 530 on Nazi Zombies because the zombies couldn't get to me but I got bored eventually. There was literally about 5 glitches like that per map.

I'm pretty sure I paid for a great game and got access to a beta for free.

At least they are doing a Beta.

The trend in the gaming industry is paid demos. Look at how many games require you to buy a preorder to get access to a demo.

And more often than not, these demos are being listed as a beta. Look at Star Trek Online, it's "open beta" went for one week before the game shipped. And while it didn't require a purchase, I doubt very seriously that anything found during that period was fixed, because by that time shipping and replication was already underway, and anything found could only be applied in a patch, if they bothered any at all.

You used to get demos to decide whether or not you wanted to buy the game, not for something to play before the game came out, after already buying the game. Companies would put out betas to help them fix bugs. Not to give a demo. So your previous example of Halo 3's beta actually being a beta is different, but most companies simply label it "beta", while very little is actually done, and it becomes a glorified demo.

The point in this? I don't give a shit about ODST or anything else Halo, but you still only get access to a "beta" if you bought a previous game. Everything else in the industry is going the same way.

It might actually be worth picking it up now as the price should of come down to something more worthy of what you get.

I actually think it looks MUCH better

Guess I'm gonna have to bite the bullet on ODST finally, which isn't entirely a bad thing. ODST may actually be worth the $60 now with the beta.

And you can definitely find it for less than $60 these days... I bet you can find it for $40 if you look around a bit and are patient for sales.

Not a big shocker, but like seriously 95% of the people whom are going to buy reach will own ODST, right?

I'll be in the 5%, because ODST just didnt really have much appeal to me (no spartans, pfft' no thank you), but Reach,, OHHH BABY does it look like its gonna be a cool story, can't wait

I'm not too worried. I have faith in Bungie. They haven't disappointed me yet. This game is going to sell like freakin hot cakes.

They also released 3 new screenshots, which look pretty impressive. They also say they're demoing a flythrough of one of the levels (maps?) at X10 right now. I can't wait to see more!

Lol, I doubt it. ODST sold nicely, and this announcement will even bolster sales. To be honest, ODST won't be a PH title for some time to come, if you use other title for a reference.

uhhhh with the exception of Halo 3 most games get that status after 9 month and selling like 500k units....even Halo Wars is a PH title now...its been there for a while now I think

As a Halo fan I'm actually impressed by the cover, much better than Halo Wars. Bravo.

Are these people completely unaware of the college student's schedule? May 3 is the Monday of finals week! No graduation for me, looks like were gonna have to push things back a year.
