January NPD: Mass Effect 2 debuts at #2, hardware is down

You are just plain wrong, Paddy. They sold equal with the only caveat being UC2 was number 1 in that month where as ME2 was number 2 overall. Seriously, enough with the trolling. They both sold good and in line with expectations.

way to get super defensive about non-existent ME2/UC2 comparisons. no one here even brought up UC2 and you're defending UC2's sales.

MAG does deserve better. I'm having a very fun time hanging out with my small squad of friends and having a see-saw battle with Valor.

Raven people really need to learn how to hang in there because they really know how to squish us when they want to. Also, more people need to pick up the medical kit + revive, for all 3 sides. The game is much more interesting that way.

That was trolling. No two ways about it. I simply brought it up to illustrate that they actually sold almost exactly the same amount of copies (damn near identical), and people like you (probably you yourself) said those were paltry sales when that happened in relation to Uncharted 2. As I said, both sold in line with expectations and the only ones who can't wrap their heads around that are delusional. If you have to call one "the most overhyped game in history" to make yourself feel better because you're bitter than ME2 didn't break 600K or come in first in the NPDs (as I predicted it wouldn't) thats a personal issue. No amount of vitriol on last years best rated game and universally praised title is going to change the NPD numbers for January 2010.

They're both rated virtually identical and they both sold almost the exact same amount of copies on their respective platforms. Anything else about time frame or slow season is an excuse. A game is going to sell in line with its expectations regardless of when its released. However, if it doesn't we call that a flop. Neither game flopped so it's irrelevant. Do you expect ME2 to chart in next months NPDs? It won't - games never do. They sell the most the first week their out then they drop off and if they're lucky turn a slow burn and maybe at best will chart in the 10th spot. It doesn't matter if it's 5 days, 10 days or 20 days because the bulk of those sales will come in the first week, which ME2 essentially had at its disposal.

Again, Mass Effect 2 will be lucky to chart next month. Thats just how it works. Look at sales of virtually every PS3 & 360 game (other than a select few that broke records like COD & Halo) ... sales decrease and they often times don't even chart the next month. It'll have double the lifetime sales (or more) of the first game but that'll be by the end of the year in all territories combined.

One more thing: Those NPD comments don't seem to apply to Wii games. They're sales actually increase over time. Who knows why that is (cult of personality, word of mouth, supply issues, buying tendencies of user base) but it's true. Wii Fit, Mario kart & NSMBW are all still charting in the top 10. Thats not how it works with Playstation and X-Box games. Maybe because there is a constant stream of new titles ... I don't know why but it's true.

It's not such a bad console if you have a few buddies over.
