After telling Joystiq just yesterday that it was working on a fix for unavailable original Xbox DLC, Microsoft has restored the content to Xbox Live. Major Nelson made the news known via his Twitter account. We popped a copy of Halo 2 into the ol' Xbox 360 and, sure enough, all the map packs were once again available for download. Ninja Gaiden worked as well. So, if you need any DLC for your dusty old Xbox games, you'd best get it before the original Xbox Live servers shut down permanently on April 15 (just in time for taxes!).
Also, don't forget to snag the old Halo 2 maps for Bungie's final online farewell to the game on April 14. You really should be there to play one last time. It's got dual-wielding!

I messed up renewing my gold subscription cause my xbox live automatically tried to renew with an old credit card, and they gave me that month of gold free and started the renewal the next month

You know, I never really cared for Halo 2. When the first one came out I was still stuck in my xenophobic "I hate Xbox" stage. When Halo 2 rolled around, I was putting up with the Xbox, but didn't care too much for the game. And now I love the Xbox 360 and Halo 3.
Cool story, Acosta.

Thanks.
The only one that matters to me is MechAssault (the others I have on PC and I hate Halo multiplayer).
I don't have it yet, I was hoping it'd be released for PC or become backwards compatible/GoD...
And I can't even buy it asap and download the stuff, as my Original Xbox is very broken (fcking moving people...)(and I'll only get a new one when I want to play a game that doesn't work on the 360 and have the money to spare :P ).

DOOM 3 had maps, Full Spectrum Warrior had new missions, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within had new survival rooms, Phantom Dust had new skills, Unreal Championship 2 had new maps and characters (pretty much unlocked the AI-only characters for play)...
There's plenty more I'm sure.

I don't really understand why the DLC will be going away. I assume they are removing classic Xbox support for compatiblity reasons with 360, but these are just files. Seems like they could still be hosted pretty easily. Maybe just remove any that have to do with online multiplayer specifically :)

Why do people care about being able to download old Xbox content? If you didn't pick it up then, what the hell is going to change that now?

Yes it was. With the exception of Splinter Cell map packs (Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory - which may have gone free eventually), DDR tracks, and some of the Halo 2 packs initially, all content was free from the get-go.

ANY Microsoft published game had for-pay DLC, including Mech Assault.

I picked up the Halo2 map packs a while ago, but when I loaded it up a few days ago (unrelated to any cancellation announcements) there was a message that said that the files had been "damaged" and that I should try to re-download them and I couldn't.
It was pretty frustrating, but I'm glad to see them doing something about it so quickly... if temporarily. I do like to throw in Halo 2 every now and again for nostalgia's sake and because seems to beat 1 vs 1 on Lockout w/ shotguns.

Well, grabbed every bit of content I could.
And thank you for helping make my decision about which company to support next generation even easier, Microsoft.

For 360 DLC, as long as the licenses are attached to that console, no. Not sure about Xbox DLC, but it wouldn't surprise me if it didn't work.
