Allow me to break from the usual third-person writing style we employ at Joystiq to address my personal stake in writing this post -- I'm part of the approximately 10 percent of human males with colorblindness. I had to return Super Puzzle Fighter for GBA and turn on the symbols in Hexic (the price I pay for the love of puzzle games). Like Russ at MTV Multiplayer, I (quite likely) have the most common form of colorblindness: Deuteranopia.
Personal info aside, Negative Gamer put together a bit of an analysis of BioShock 2's hacking system -- a system which applies color matching to various rewards/punishments (green = hack, blue = reward, red = alarm, white = electric shock) and one which could be problematic for those suffering from colorblindnesses many forms. The piece takes a program called "Colour Contrast Analyser" (yes, it's a British-born application) and runs an example image of the hacking program through it, pointing out how the colors would appear to people with a variety of types of colorblindness -- the image you see above is but one example.
So! If you've ever wondered what it's like to deal with the frustration of being colorblind and not being able to play a game because of it, now's your big chance. If you want to start a petition to "fix" the situation like these folks did for Modern Warfare 2, I'd really appreciate it.

I feel sympathetic to your situation however it is not the game companies fault your color blind.. simply the amount of gamers that fit in that 10% of males is not really worth the effort or cost for game developers to give a crap.

Yea, it's not their fault, but they could still be accommodating. It takes almost no effort to include a second set of textures with symbols to make it easier for colorblind gamers, and that's 10% more people that can enjoy your game. If you look at it only in terms of money, say a game sold 100k units, and 10k of them are colorblind. If these people hadn't bought the game because of something so simple and easy to add that's $60,000 down the drain.

wow you are really dense caramel... do you develop games? a whole second set of textures would not be an easy task, and would cost a lot more than they don't. And as for the tea bag kid, the only reason libraries include those ramps is because they have to by law due to the Americans with Disabilities Act. However before that act they treated it the same way as the game developers are treating you color blinded people, just wasn't worth the money....although ramps really aren't expensive...but still...

tea bag I addressed this in detail up above. I'm all for them adding an option for the color blind. but that library comment is stupid.
video games are a luxury. and it is also a young industry. everything is not perfect, but it's slowly getting better. Things take time.
if you are going to get upset about this then why not complain about controllers and how they are only made for people with two hands. Especially the Wii, why does nintendo hate amputees so much? where do we draw the line? Why has no game ever offered closed captioning? not subtitles, but things like "wind blowing" "Dogs barking"
again it's a young industry, companies have deadlines and budgets to meet and sometimes they just have to go for the majority to stay afloat. They are not receiving money from the government. and there are no laws forcing them to do so.

ah finally someone else on joystiq with intelligence, I've gotta agree with space. Especially considering the economy is in a recession right now you can not expect them to add unnecessary expenses to there already low budget when such a small percentage of people will make use of it.. and also as he mentioned there are many types of disabilities out there. You guys are just selfish to think you are of more importance than other disabled individuals.. heck there's even disabilities far worse than amputees out there. They can't help everyone... you just gotta live with it or choose the games you play more wisely and stop being such babies.

He made the type of point Bobby Kotick or any other money hungry CEO would make. In other words It's not a good one. The amount of time and money it takes to accommodate colorblind and deaf people is minimal. Sure there are several disabilities out there, but common ones like these are easily integrated into the gaming experience.

Please fix this 2K!! It is so frustrating to do the hacking mini-game like this, I get it wrong about 50% of the time. Red and green look exactly the same. Put stripes or a star or something in the green spaces or better yet give us back the old hacking mini-game.

Honest question: If you can't distinguish between red and green, how do you drive? Can you even?

I feel sorry for you. That's gotta suck when you mess up. Does Bioshock 2 still trigger the alarm when you mess up sometimes? I can just imagine you having low health, finding a safe in a nice quiet area, failing the hack, then getting shot to hell by security bots.

My father is color blind and tells the difference of traffic lights the same way. He does think those flashing red lights (the ones with the bright flash behind it) are the way to go though. In a storm its hard to see....just pointing it out.

I'd love the old mini game back too. I played the pipe game every chance I got. It was fun, and was actually a slight challenge in later levels (which I assume people whined about, the only reason I can think of for its removal). The utter mediocrity of the 'stop the needle' thing is ridiculously simple and boring. As for the fact that enemies paused while you played it, well, they could have just fixed that instead of replacing it entirely.

Best of luck. This shouldn't be a hard thing to fix and hopefully 2K will listen to their customers. They listened when the original game had problems with FOV in widescreen mode as well as with the ridiculous DRM the original game shipped with, so hopefully they'll listen this time too.

It's also really hard to game if you've got arthritis, you're completely blind, or any one of numerous other physical handicaps.
I feel for you, but just because a game is hard for some people doesn't mean they should run around patching it to dumb it down for everyone else.
Now I'm no expert on colour blindness (clearly) so if there is a way to make the hacking tool CB friendly without diluting the experience for everyone else I'm all for it. But seriously, using colours to distinguish between things is a pretty much game design 101, heck, it's life design 101. Isn't a little rich to be complaining about it now.

Dumbing it down for everyone else? They just need to add symbols to the hacking game. And this can be an option, called "colorblind mode" in the menus just like every other game that has a colorblind mode.

Clearly I should have added ADD to the list of example problems because seemingly neither of you two concentrate long enough to read past my second sentence.
Firstly, I made it perfectly clear that if there is a way they can modify it without watering the experience down for others then I'm all for it. Secondly, I'm not 'angered' in the slightest - how you got that from my post is beyond me.
The point I am making is that colour blindness is but one of many afflictions, syndromes, disabilities, disorders etc that can affect gamers. Where do developers draw the line? Do you want toggles and alternative settings in for everything?
Take epilepsy for instance, how do they deal with that? The put a warning up at the start of the game (if you're lucky) and press on. Would you rather Aliens VS Predators have an epilepsy setting in the menu that turns the lights on the entire game?
Pull your butt kissing politically correct heads in gentlemen, it IS still possible in this day and age to have an opinion without necessarily being and insensitive a-hole. Something you have incorrectly assumed me to be.

I think instead of burdening the game devs gamers with this problem should get TVs that can change the color palette.
It's a slippery slope once you start shoving political correctness down other people's throats. Target got sued because their website ws hard for blind people to read.
It's not fair to require everything be accessible to everyone because that is incredibly, prohibitively difficult to implement. What you do with these standards is eliminate any small devs from competition. Sure, in this case it's easy. So?
Instead, place the onus on the individual. If you are deaf, figure out a way to deal. If you can't do math, don't get math games or carry a calculator. If you're color blind, get a TV that screws with the colors until you can tell the difference. Take personal responsibility.
Games are not a right. Equal access to games is not a right. I realize I'll be downranked for this, but this blog doesn't cater to every disability, so it really is out of line to cast stones.

We're not asking for a handout... just that CERTAIN shades of red and green are not used right next to each other. I mean, one can easily exaggerate the green-ness or the red-ness to opposite sides of their respective spectrum and everyone would be happy.

This comment section isn't accessible to those who are blind or too poor to afford a computer. Or people who lost their hands. Or children under the age of 3.
Some games won't work for epileptics or color blinds or deafs or speakers of X language.
And that's 100% OK. I wish they had left Wipeout alone. I wish they were able to present their work as intended, and those who have the misfortunate of a disability simply found other games to play.

A great example of this is in Modern Warfare:2 the perk Sit-Rep (let's you see claymores on the map, even through walls) uses a "Holographic" type red, that not only blends in with certain backgrounds, but gets lost in explosions etc. I literally can not see it unless i'm 3 inches away from the claymore. A whole perk made useless.
Another example I saw the other night is that apparently when an enemy is in front of a smoke grenade, their name actually comes out a green color which can get you killed rather quickly.
If you've never had to deal with colorblindness good for you, it's a deceptively frustrating thing that when people have it can literally break a game and make it un-playable (puzzle fighter).
