Every time I forgo a new demo because I'm out of HD space I wonder the same thing, why do they hate me. The statement about most 120GB owners running out of space is BS, because all us 20GB and Core/Arcade owners are definitely out of space.

Out of space here too.

250 GB is pretty small by most computing standards. I would immediately upgrade any laptop with that little amount of space. 120 is kind of a joke, and 20 GB is a flash card.

http://www.pricewatch.com/hard_removable_drives/

For 120 dollars, you can get a 640 GB laptop drive. Or you could buy a 1.5 TERRABYTE desktop drive. Or, of course, you could buy an Xbox 360 drive with 1/5th the space of the comparable laptop equivalent, or 1 / 12th the space of the desktop.

If they let us use arbitrary hard drives in the 360, I'd grab a 500 GB drive tomorrow and be done with it. Or MS could sell one. But right now the 250 GB drive is looking like the tallest midget in the room. Strutting it around like a prizewinner when we know that it is a product of the slow-drip of the marketing department just sounds pretty... douchey. I've thrown out bigger hard drives for being uselessly small. I hope MS's marketing team can come up with a different spin on the whole situation, because the small real-world size combined with the "It's special!" spiel makes it sound like it tottered off the short bus.

You guys could have at least asked why the hard drives are so expensive.

I know this is meant for fun mostly, but some serious questions every now and then would be appreciated by most i would think.

They are so expensive so people buying lower SKUs have to make up the difference if they chose to upgrade. You buy the Arcade for $200, you're going to spend $100 to get the HDD space of the next model.

Simple as that... It all comes down to them not making the HDD standard in all SKUs. It being proprietary is just them 'protecting their investment.'

Granger is 100% correct! They want that $200 sku to undercut Sony, but they also need a $300 one to make as much money as possible. Since the only difference is the hard drive they have to make those more than $100.

We wont see regular prices on HDDs until the Arcade is gone.

I keep reading these boring, politically-spoken interviews with the Xbox staff. Game Informer had one recently. Same drill here.

The guy's smug answer that we don't need more space does not convince me. How about those of us still on 20gb drives, who won't pay half the price of a console to get 100 more gb, where to get 40 more gb doesn't even seem worth it for $70.

It's stupid and they know it, but they keep saying, "We're pretty happy with our strategy right now, thank you very much."

I agree.

The question about games on demand was lite.

They should have asked does charging twice, three times as much as the game can be bought at retail with no physical media, manual or case represent good value for Xbox customers. If costs have been saved cutting out manufacturing, distribution and retailer profits, why have none of these been passed on.

The MS rep claimed things were good. When was the last time something was 'good' and we did not get numbers, graphs and power-point slides trumpeting those 'good' numbers.

I saw Oblivion GOTY in Gamestation yesterday for £7, the version with no extra content on GoD is £20, you'd have to be simple to buy it off MS.

Very soft questions.

As for digital distribution, I'm not supporting it on the Xbox. At least shops reduce prices over time and have sales. Nothing gets cheaper on XBL, universally decried as bad value for money horse armour DLC still costs the same bad value for money 4 years later.

Digital distribution is going to be bad for us the consumer. They are selling it as convenient, easy, quick and hassle free to us, but the reality is there is no store competition, no price reducing old stock, no clearing shelf sales. Just eternal high prices.

I am curious as to how long we have until the next batch of consoles comes out. Sure the PS3 may have a "10 year lifecycle", but a PS4 will come out sooner than 2016.

2012 perhaps? That would be about 6 years after this cycle started, and by then I think most people would be willing to move on and see what the new systems can do. And hell, by then nvidia will probably have unveiled at least two new series of graphics cards.

Not to mention how much cheaper 3.2GHz quadcores will be by then, or whatever CPU they choose to replace the current ones.

Anyone who thinks '10 year life cycle' means no new console for 10 years, is a moron.

I think we'll hear start hearing new console info in 2011 at the trade shows, with releases in 2012, maybe..

Haha, that translation made me laugh.

I myself am fine on space, but I know I've seen tons of comments of people running out. Really Aaron's comment is just a more defensive kinda, "We're satisfied for now, and anyone complaining will just have to tough it out until we come up with some new ideas," type thing.

MS will probably release the 250GB separately once they have a replacement already in the works. Give it another year and we'll be hearing things like, "Actually most people haven't even gone past the original 120GB limit we used to have, and now with 250GB being our standard high end, we don't see this as a major problem."

I'm sure Microsoft has internal stats as to how much space each Xbox 360 owner is using on average. For me, 120GB is plenty, since I can delete whatever I am not using at the time and download it again later.

I cant see any more big exclusives being announced to release THIS year...the best year of the 360...Thats already the top franchises right there...Halo, Fable, Crackdown (I guess), Mass Effect 2, Splinter Cell and Alan Wake...all great titles THATs WHY I am saying there cant be much more besides Natal games and some LIVE features...blowing smoke early to facilitate those console sales...

Making consumers think...oh man, all this AND MORE? I dont know...

I understand that they need to make money back on arcade owners that bought theirs for $200 instead of $300. And from that perspective the $100 price tag on HDD's makes sense. But I paid $400 for my 20gb 360, and I'm out of space. $100 for a hard drive just to be able to buy new games is ridiculous.

microsoft needs to remodel the 360 really this thing is huge and it take a lot of power to run. It is simple remodel 360 with a 120 gig hard drive. Put it at a 289 price and package in halo the hd remake. This thing would sale like hotcakes. If they did this I think they would out sale the wii in 2011 hands down.

"360 is not going to have HDMI"

I find it hard to believe the 250 won't make it out as a standalone product when people are suckers enough to spend as much as they do on the 120. Why would they want to miss out on that dough. MS will always lie to your face to ensure their current products keep selling. This is just how they run their business.

Grrr... why do these interviews HAVE to play out like

"Hey.. you're AWESOME.. why are you so awesome? KEEP BEING AWESOME!"

You're a glorified free PR man. You should be ashamed of that.

You should have asked something more hard hitting, like "So, late next gen, can we expect you to take our DLC servers, and 360 matchmaking servers offline too?"

Or taking them to task on their insane pricing structures for some recent things.

Guess that'd be too "dangerous", eh?

Gaming "Journalism" sure is great!

Originally, the reason why the 20GB HDD was $100 was so that the price of getting the $300 Core with a hard drive was the same as getting a $400 Pro. Then the 20GB Pro was upgraded to 60GB, the standalone 20GB drives disappeared, and the 60GB drives went on sale for $100. Again, it kept the pricing consistent.

When the Elite came out, it retailed for $480, which was $180 more then the Core at the time, so the separate 120GB HDD cost $180. I know the price on the 120GB HDD is down to $150, but the price between the $200 Arcade and $300 Elite is only $100, and that's all the 120GB HDD should cost and the 60GB drive should disappear.

Hell, it should be cheaper, but I can live with them keeping SKU pricing consistent. I thought it was bad before, but this is just ridiculous. Now they wont even sell the 250GB HDD as is, they'll make you buy a $400 bundle just to get it.
