There's a fine line between "accessible" and "expensive".

Damn shame they're going to charge for a demo. They need to do like MS did for the Fable 2 Pub Games and give it to those that preorder the full game.

Hmm charging for demo's? I thought they've been doing that for a while now but, just slapping the word "beta" on the end...

Demo that serves as a prologue? I can dig that. Not that my buying Dead Rising 2 was ever in question, of course.

I don't know... i think it's a neat concept. I'm kinda curious about games' proof of concept stages -- kinda the 'what it's all about in a distilled form, more than playing the tatorial level of the main game.

if it's under $5, how's it worse than paying for the post-game additions to Assassin's Creed?

No way in hell it's under $5. More like $15-20. They didn't say affordable as opposed to a XBLA game. They mean affordable as opposed to $60. $30 honestly wouldn't surprise me. Remember, almost 2 MILLION people have paid ~$40 for the GT5 "prologue"...

I think you're going to see a lot more companies doing this in the future. Releasing a paid demo worked out very well financially for Gran Turismo, and I'm surprised it has taken so long before another publisher caught on.

So, this is a non-add-on add-on.

See, if you PAY for something, then it isn't a DEMO.

Capcom is trying to start a new trend. RE5 Versus mode wasn't enough apparently.

I wonder if it will have achievements. Demos don't have them and this isn't quite a demo, nor is it quite a full game or an arcade release. I assume it will be a Game on Demand but how many points do you give it?

I need to read reviews for Dead Rising 2 before even renting it. I hated the save system and controls in the first game. I thought overall the game was great, I just couldn't play it due to the controls. I got to that scene with the chick on the motorcycle. Thanks to the stupid tank controls, I just couldn't shoot her. I'd die, be forced to go to previous save point, spend 10 minutes to get back to her and die again. After putting up with that for over an hour, I shut off the game and never played it again.

I've got a guy on my friend list with all the achievements for the game. That seems impossible to me.

I got the 1000 in Dead Rising, once you get used to the game (controls, the item locations, mall layour etc) it's not too tough - except for the one where you have to save 50+ of the 53 survivors in one playthrough. The survivor AI is so terrible, it was a pain but I'm glad I got it done.

RadiantViper,
I played it through the other week and tried to get 50 survivors. I got 48. I wanted to cry. I also accidentally shot one with the Mega Blaster because he between me and of those yellow-coat psychopath guys. Even so, I still would only have 49, which would have made everything more bitter.

I actually don't mind this, I mean, it's not a part of the game, so it'll be something that will get me excited for the real thing. I would definitely pay 2-5 bucks for something like this, as long as they make it as expansive enough to tide me over until the real game comes out.

I'm guessing this will be bigger than a demo... I can't see them packaging a demo up with a different name and charging for it. A demo typically has 5-10 minutes of content... If this thing has a few hours of content, how is it different from DLC?

I'm going to wait to decide if I think this is a good idea until someone inevitably reviews it.

* I wasn't defending the idea of this or DLC... The more I think about DLC, the more I wish they'd go back to retail expansions. But that's a different story. This *could* be cool, but probably won't be. If it's like $10 and 1/6 the size of the retail game, in theory, there's nothing wrong with it, and it could save us from buying $60 games that we lose interest in after the first 1/6th of it. Or, it could just be an hour long demo with "new" content that costs $8, which would suck, of course.

Time will tell, but let's see how it goes before you all turn into Negative Nancies! ^_^

If it's full of unique content then it's NOT a demo. So stop calling it such. I'm kind of annoyed that Randy would use the term "demo" in the title because it reads as if he's grasping for straws.

I find it amazing when people get upset about companies not releasing demo's, it makes sense for new IP's, But if it's somewhat of an established franchise then there really is no need. Most demos don't seem to make it beyond the hardcore demographic anyways and most hardcore gamers make their mind up about a game before they even get their hands on it. I'd much rather a dev use their resources to further polish a title instead of wasting it on something that doesn't add to the experience of the title.

Article headline: X10: Dead Rising 2 'Case Zero' prologue is standalone, will be game's 'demo'

Direct quote from developer (who goes unnamed): ""It's not like it's a chunk of the main game -- it is unique content, so even if you want to look at it as a 'demo,' it's not."

Shoddy reporting, Joystiq. I expect this from Kotaku, but not from you fine people.

Wow.

Has education really sunk to such a level that people have no idea how to read something in its entirity and comprehend what it says based on everything written?

Just because the word "demo" is mentioned everyone is up in arms saying "OMG!1 pay for demo? Nooes" As one poster has already said, if it has unique content, it's not a demo.

It links the two games, and so will not be part of Dead Rising 2, therefore it's not a demo. What he obviously mean was that it was a demo of the gameplay to expect in the final game, not a part of the final game given to you to try out as in a normal demo.

Geez.

DO THE EVENTS BEFORE DEAD RISING 1 WITH JESSIE AND BRAD AS THE MAIN CHARACTERS, WOO WOO!

Both playable.

Okay... Maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Would be cool to see how the outbreak began though.

A sandbox kinda idea where you spend more time driving different vehicles between towns finding out clues whilst smashing into the zombies.
(There could be a co-op kinda thing here where one could drive and one could shoot.)

We could see some of this martial arts stuff that I've been reading about that Jessie is supposedly good at. Wahey!

Some people just can't read...

It's NOT a simple demo! Case Zero, according to the article, it's stuff that won't be in the main game. It works as both a demo and as a XBLA title. And a cheap one, it seems.

It's also said that it takes place between both games, working as a sort of interquel.

...Frank West cameo, anyone?

this is just the continuation of the trend to make money on something that use to be free.
Want to play as a new char? $5.
Want to play in 2 new outfits? $10.
want to play online? monthly fee.

but besides the fact that yes it is a demo and yes you are paying for it, it just plain sucks that they would release this game on all 3 systems (no the wii isn't a game system) and only release this for the 360.
its as bad as when you only got to play as the joker on the ps3.
I own a PC a PS3 and an xbox360 but I don't pay for gold membership because i'm fully against paying to play online seeing as I pay for my internet connection.

its not like its a lot of money but if you haven't noticed everytime people go "oh well its only $10" it becomes another thing they can charge us for, and we just accept it.
before xbox live people would have laughed at the idea.
