Are you ready for the upcoming revolution (in approximately three years), when Apple's iPad begins to deliver on the "magical" capabilities that Steve Jobs promised not so long ago? We're not exactly on board yet either, but PopCap's co-founder John Vechey believes that we should be prepared for such a possibility. In speaking with Eurogamer, he says, "The iPad's important, but I think it's going to be more important in three years ... it's probably going to take the second generation to make it really, like, 'Wow!'"
Before addressing gaming, he admits, "This is my opinion ... it's not like it has a magical set of features, just a great package." His perception is that the device will be perfect for both children and ... his mom? "Because she can't screw it up, she can't download a bunch of stuff ... that's the perfect mum computer, right?" (We're inclined to agree with Vechey's claim, for the record.) It's also a question of accessibility though, he says. "Here's this new device that gets to more people with a really great e-commerce model attached to it ... it's really easy to buy on the iPhone -- that's part of what makes it successful."
And yes, like PopCap's Andrew Stein told us earlier this year, Vechey reaffirms the developer's interest in games being re-developed for the iPad. "I don't know if this is a PopCap position or my word, but we're certainly going to support it -- I want to play Plants vs. Zombies on that." In the meantime, we'll be playing PvZ on our iPhone while waiting for that (and the revolution).

There's no way you've seen their actual profit margin. You think physical parts are the only costs associated with building a high-tech device?

...they've got the OS developed. The tweaks for the iPad were probably simple. The box and cabling will add 15 dollars, max.
Either there's a HUGE AT&T data subsidy (which wouldn't make sense on non-3G models) or Apple is taking everyone for a ride.

You must get outraged quite easily then. The profit margins on the iPad are pretty standard for ALL of the consumer electronic market. Even if you were to build a computer yourself with parts bought at a discounted price, you're still paying double what it actually costs to make and distribute them, even after the discount you bargain-hunted for.

It'll change the casual games market. Not gaming in general.
I think this guy is thinking the iPad will be able to push thousands of copies of Bejewelled to moms, others who still believe all games haven't moved past donkey kong, and just the iPad consumer base in general.
And he's right. A marketplace for Popcap games on a device tailored exclusively to people who value a simple interface over utility is going to be huge for the company.

There is no reason for those people to go ipad over an itouch or iphone. Casual gaming already has the pc and the wii. And you could say the itouch/phone/ds are casual hand-held what is a big itouch going to add or change?

It's just a show-off gadget nothing more. Maybe in the future I can see table sized (pad) gaming having a possibility for group casual gaming, but this no?
It fails as a notebook because of it's os/processing power
it fails as a kindle because it emits to much light/hurts your eyes
it fails as a gaming device because it isn't trying to be one

Not at that price point it won't.
Ask Sony about how many parents are willing to pay $500 (not to mention data plans upgrades etc) for an electronic device. And unlike Sony Apple won't be dropping the price. Not to mention the lifecycle is going to be 3 years tops. Probably 2 before they make it obsolete. Fail as a gameboy killer.
And casual gamers aren't interested in dropping this kind of money for gaming. It's and added bonus type of thing for someone that bought it as a portable media player. I know it's getting old to say but the fact remains it's a giant iPod touch sans convenient size.
The biggest problem is it doesn't fill any voids out there as I can see it. It's more like Apple trying to create a demand for something no one wanted originally and only Mac fans are biting.

If we talk about gaming only (not ONLY though) then this is a much, MUCH better option than that piece of crap.

Only if the iPad was a forerunner to the Apple console.

Yeah, that'd be great. Lots of cool things. Like, halfway through the cycle there'd be a change, where all your accessories wouldn't work with it anymore, because you 'needed' to buy all new ones. Then there'd be DRM at first, followed by an option to pay to unlock them later. And console software updates would cost money. And a new revision would be out every six months.

iPad? Forerunner?
Does this mean their console will be a giant ring that destroys the whole galaxy when you turn it on?

No, really, other than it being a giant iPhone, what is the appeal of the iPad?

When it came out I told my best friend, who's a big Apple guy, about it and his first question (without even looking at it) was, "Does it support flash?"
I went back through the Engadget article and said it didn't look like it, and he said, "No thanks then. If it had flash I'd consider it."

It's just a giant iPod touch. And I'll never see that as a gaming platform.
But really, in this case, bigger isn't better. Probably means more expensive, anyway.

I remember seeing a demo of warcraft 3 on touch screen done by some (student?) research project before iPhone. That could actually happen on the iPad, however I'm not sure it has the muscle to run WC3. When Starcraft 2 is released in 2037, we'll all be dead already, so who cares ...

Apple's using the word "magical" for iPad makes me think of Disney and their totally controlled environments where robopeople wish you to "Have a magical day!!!" Its a huge turn off.

Thanks for the heads up. However, he only owns 7.1% of Disney and that is because he sold Pixar to them. He is on Disney's board too. He is one tough MFKR.

It's in PopCap's best interest to say things of this nature. I don't think this is actually anyone's opinion at the offending company, they just want others to believe such.
