According to statistics compiled by mobile industry analysis firm Flurry, new development projects for the iPhone "exploded" during the month of January. The number of new projects during the first month of 2010 more than tripled the total for December -- an upswing which Flurry's "Smartphone Industry Pulse" report chalks up to excitement over the announcement of the Big and Tall model of Apple's multitouch device, the iPad.
In fact, that excitement was so palpable that it managed to reverse an upward trend for Android app development, as seen in this graph. Perhaps this trend could be re-reversed -- if only Motorola would introduce a mobile device that's roughly the size of a baking sheet.

So, you're telling me that soon there's going to be 300,000 garbage apps, and a handful of good ones, as opposed to, say.. 150,000 garbage apps, and a handful of good ones?
Nice, I can support that.

Sure, that could very well be the reason, but just imagine how many current users would "upgrade" to a flash-ready device?
Besides, they could just be a-holes about it and make it flash 6-8 or so. Most sites are probably going to ask you to upgrade even if they don't take advantage of the newer flash technologies anyways.

no, it would be 300,000 garbage apps with 2 handfuls of good ones, rather than 150,000 garbage apps, with only 1 handful of good ones

They'll still be overcharging for useless crap.
Speaking of overcharging (Honestly, I just wanted a reason to say this) I just added up the cost of Pain with all it's DLC, it came to $75. I hardly think even with all it's DLC it's worth more than a retail game.

this may be the one thing from Apple that I might buy. Then again, I said the same thing about MacBook Pro, iPhone, and iPod Touch.

Alright, let me clear something up right now:
I hate the iPod Touch because of no flash support. Seriously, why no flash? I would love the iPod if it had flash.

It doesn't support Flash because then you could easily make the pun that it'll be a 'flash' in the pan that will never last.

actually, no. I would like it if it had flash. Apple finds every way to gain money and sacrifice quality. Most people think they make it up in Customer Service.

A friend of mine got a new iPhone 3G or 3GS last year, and his internet was acting really slow and screwy, while his girlfriend's phone (same model) would be just fine. This happened no matter where they were at.
He took it to a store to the "genius bar" and they took a look at it and said they'd need to take it to the back. The girl comes back a minute later saying they had no idea what was wrong, and that they couldn't fix it. As soon as he walked out of the store it started working fine, despite the woman saying they didn't really change anything and had no idea what was wrong.

I'm pretty excited for iPad apps. The extra screen space will let developers really explore what multitouch can do without having fingers taking up 1/2 the screen.

I don't hate the iPad but I would have no interest in owning one. I'd never use it at home where I have my laptop which does tons more than iPad ever will. And it's too big to easily take on the go without some kind of shoulder bag or backpack. And it's too inconvenient to whip out in a long line or on a crowded bus.
I'd get an iPhone if the monthly plans were cheaper. I'd get an iPod touch if they were cheaper. But an iPad, doubt I'd pick one up at any price.

you're right. an fps has far superior controls on other gaming devices, but you know what? people who enjoy it take it for what it is. im not saying everyone that accepts what it is will enjoy it, but a lot of people have. i mean cmon... an fps on your phone!

You know, for the last two years I've been hearing about how the iPhone can't game well from people in these comments sections, yet in my own experience in that time, I've had a lot of fun with the games that are available. It's nullified the need for me to carry my DS or PSP any more. I carry one device and I'm fine with it.
And lest you assume I'm not a gamer, I only point to my ridiculous collection of nearly every console ever made and my 29,000+ point gamerscore, not padded with Avatar or TNMT or the like.
Maybe you doubters are taking it too seriously. If you swear up and down that you won't ever support it or own it, does the iPad/iPhone platform affect you? Not really.

Actually, Android development is still increasing, your interpretation of the graph is just incorrect. Apple development just increased more rapidly than Android did, and that's why the graph looks like that. You'll notice the y axis is labeled "Percent, Iphone vs Android"
Look at the third graph here, and it'll become clear: http://gizmodo.com/5470498/new-iphone-vs-android-app-development-over-time

Mentioning no real controls for games, doesn't it support bluetooth accessories? Although one would have to get the developers supporting use of a bluetooth controller and taking it out and playing a game would be cumbersome.

The most important thing about the iphone as a gaming platform is that it's always with me. Both PSP and DS are too bulky for my pockets and even if they weren't I don't always take them with me when I leave the house, yet I can never anticipate when I might have time to play. Seriously, you're not living in the real world if you don't consider the drastically better portability and additional functionality as a major factor in what makes iphone and to a lesser extent ipod a very compelling games offering
No real games? there's loads of interesting things going on on the iphone
Off the top of my head
- Eliss - buy eliss and tell me that's not as hardcore a game as you'll find on any console, handheld or otherwise
- Spider - inspired design and a beautiful game
- Minisquadron - buckets of fun; very easy to get multiplayer running if you have a friend with an iphone
- Civilisation Revolution - it's civ. in your pocket. all the time
- GTA: Chinatown wars - it's thoroughly playable. I don't know first hand how it compares to DS/PSP but I'm playing it and I wouldn't be if it was a DS game because I DONT CARRY MY DS EVERYWHERE
GPS games (can PSP/Ds do that?)
- GPS Mission is a great laugh if you live in a supported area (free)
- My dad is WoW-levels of obsessed with Parallel Kingdoms (free)
Chromixa, Auditorium & cross fingers are all fine puzzle games that I've played to death. Auditorium I had already played on the PC but felt it was worth getting again - it controls better on the iphone IMHO
This leaving aside all of the free and next to free word games
It remains to be seen if the ipad will prove itself a worthwhile gaming device that moves 'gaming' forward. If you refuse to accept that multitouch gaming actually is 'real' gaming then obviously you won't think that it's going to push gaming forward.
If you are excited about the future of multitouch gaming then I think the ipad has a lot of potential. The additional screen real estate could allow highly sophisticated multitouch inputs and onscreen options. The possibilities for multiuser interaction (albeit limited as the screen is still a bit on the small side).
1 - play eliss
2 - imagine eliss on a bigger screen
3 - buy an ipad
Ishboy is right that that graph doesn't mean any developers have left android to develop for iphone because of the ipad announcement. The statement itself barely makes sense, let alone a cursory glance at the graph itself...

But it wasn't announced until January 27, so there can't be a connection between app development surge in January and iPad announcement.
