Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson, also known as "that one guy responsible for preventing an R18+ rating from being adopted in the country," recently had some (unsurprisingly) inflammatory things to say about gaming enthusiasts during an interview with Good Game. "About two o' clock in the morning I got a threatening note from a gamer shoved under my door," Atkinson claimed. "I feel that my family and I are more at risk from gamers than we are from the outlaw motorcycle gangs who also hate me ... the outlaw motorcycle gangs haven't been hanging around my doorstep at 2 a.m.. A gamer has."
Well, yeah. We wish we could argue with that logic, but we just can't. It's rock solid. Except -- wait. Maybe the outlaw motorcycle gangs don't have the time to wait by your door at 2 a.m. because they're too busy perpetrating violent crimes and distributing meth? No, no -- that's just crazy talk.

Pretty sure he's not being harassed by bikers because his personal agenda doesn't include belittling their hobby or passing laws to oppress them.

I have a simple solution to answer this question. Lets drop the guy in the middle of a Hell's Angels get together. Tell them that this guy things they are a bunch of pussies and that he's more scared of people that play video games. Next we drop whats left at a gamers convention. This may not meet all the criteria of the scientific method but I think we will find the conclusion pretty conclusive.

Start banning Harley motorcycles, and you'll have bikers at your doorstep, too.

Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah... Strawman!
Getting threatening notes from crazed loners who DO NOT REPRESENT THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE is no justification for refusing to release adult games in Australia. It probably is to Atkinson, but he's a huge narcissistic coward who's so threatened by dissenting points of view that he passed a law to make bloggers with dissenting points of view post their names and addresses online. Gee, I wonder what he'd do with that information immediately afterward? Certainly nothing like bring the powers of the bloated Australian government down upon the people who don't like him, no sir! He's got too much INTEGRITY for that!
Personally, I don't care what that sawed-off tyrant does. I don't live in his country, which considers civil rights a quaint, outmoded novelty, nor would ever visit until it cleans up its act and stops pursuing legal action against people who own naked pictures of The SImpsons. (Yes, this actually happened. Glad to know Australia's going after the REAL threats to society!) This is Australia's problem, and they can either act like scared little mice they've been since Adolf-kinson was elected, or man up and vote him out of office.

Well, if Australian gamers are deranged enough to actually send death threats over a lack of 18+ games (though he could have been BSing that), then perhaps they are, at least in Australia
Though i'm sure the blame rests more with Parliament. If they didn't want him doing this, they would have removed him, right?

If he was really worried about gamers, he'd pass legislation allowing r18 games, any gamer in australia would be busy for at least a year or two merely catching up on all the old games they missed on.
Way too busy to write threatening notes!

Hmm curious if he realized all he did was piss off all the biker gangs?
I wouldnt run it past this guy to just write a note himself and say it was by a gamer. From what I read he seems like a media whore willing to bend the media's coverage to his side. The game store companies and maybe the studio's in AU should ban together and create some factual ad's about the games and the industry. I'm sure with no 18+ rating several studio's have shut down causing job losses and loss of revenue, also I bet some stores are suffering and also had to close up shop. 18+ I know will not be a major percentage of games sold but a increase is a increase regardless. That and it will also cut back on piracy.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. This guy needs to listen to the people. Maybe he could have an "accident" in his car on the rode near a biker gang hideout.

Something tells me that this guy made up this entire story just to get support for his shitty argument. Movies have guns, tits, and violence, why can't games? Liberal prick.

Atkinson is a member of the Australian Labor Party. He is not a "Liberal."
The ALP has members of many different political ideologies. In the case of Atkinson, he is a Catholic Social Conservative. Like Tony Abbot but with less understanding of economics.
That said, the Liberal Party of Australia has many different ideologies represented amongst its members. And some of these members are very, very liberal in the classical sense (i.e. in favor of having less government control of both our economic and personal lives). And these members of the Liberals DO support our cause, even if they can't say so on television (because then they'd get accused of undermining common decency and wanting to corrupt our children).
The ALP has KRudd, Atkinson and Steven Conroy. All of them are socially conservative and believe our personal lives should be subject to state jurisdiction. They are no better, and possibly even worse, than the Liberal Party on the R18+ issue.

Being in an Aussie biker gang, I find his comments completely distasteful. I think I'm gonna write him a letter about it. Or I could just throw this brick with a chain attached to it through his window... Either one would suffice.

Yeah, Aussie biker gangs beat people to death at an airport, wage a 10 year war on eachother, deal insane amounts of drugs and guns, murer state witnesses, rape, pillage and generally be evil.
Gamers: We...sit around and...play games. Yeahhhhhhhh
Atkinson is a dick. But that idiot that stuck a note under his door? Good job asshole, good job. REAAAALL slick.

Okay so the reason that you don't like Atkinson is he's being reactionary against mature games, but the gamer in the article is more reactionary in his creepy note leaving, the writer and editor are reactionary in their article and per usual everyone who posts a comment is even more reactionary. If the choice is between two groups of reactionary people will the common man side with a politician with a family or a bunch of gamers on a website about gaming spewing negative press and hate in defense of a pass time. Yeah it must suck not to be able to play a lot of games in Australia that are released elsewhere but gaming is a hobby, a pastime, and not your whole life or at least shouldn't be (gaming writers and editors aside).
Take all the time you spend flaming and raging about this issue and use it to contribute to local politics and/or improving where you live in Australia and then you might be able to actually sway opinion your way.
