Make sure to buy a box of Wetnaps along with that copy of the new issue of Edge Magazine, because that thing's got Crysis 2 details leaking out if it all over the place. We already know the game will take place in New York, but according to the developer, it'll be "a New York City like none in games or cinema." Crytek is more interested in having the city environment act as a focus on the action rather than a big open sandbox, so while you'll see lots of the city above, you'll only be able to travel in "constrained freedom," or only about "three storeys up and down."
The magazine also contains info about the new Nanosuit 2, which seems to augment not only your physical powers, but sensory perception in various modes as well, giving you the ability to hear conversations at a distance or see directional bullet trails or x-rays. The suit can also increase your powers of memory, apparently, as the devs promise the game should have "five big things you'll remember forever." Oh no, wait, wrong switch -- it was set on the increased hype setting there. Our bad.
[Thanks, Peter!]

Tigre,
"Crysis costed 22 MIL to make." Your point? Given how a fairly large portion of Crysis' budget was spent on engine development and how much they spent on advertising, $22,000,000 is more than in-line with current gen game development; if you were to ignore Cryengine2 expenses and advertising costs, the game's budget would be far less than what Crytek announced. Guerilla Games spent more money on the development of Killzone 2, Rockstar spent at least $100,000,000 on the GTA IV games, and Epic's $10,000,000 budget for Gears of War completely ignores the expenditures made developing the UE3 in tandem with the game. $10,000,000 - $20,000,000 is the AVERAGE budget for a AAA title in this generation. If Crysis didn't bring in a decent return on investment and Crytek didn't see the PC as a viable gaming platform, they wouldn't have bothered releasing Warhead nor would they bother making a PC port of the sequel.

Besides, consoles do oftentimes dumb down games that used to be PC only, you wouldn't know Tigre since you have NEVER been a PC gamer. I have been both, I've been a PC gamer as a young child and a console gamer mostly with the PS1 and PS2. I would have with the PS3 but you know what happened to me with that.

I play a lot of games on PC too, but "dumbing down" is never really a complaint, because that barely ever means more than the removal of a few mostly useless features anyway.

I'm just tired of hearing it in every single post. I apologize if I stated a fallacy that the game wouldn't of seen a sequel, that was incorrect. It's just becoming old hat hearing you blab on and on about console this and PC that. It's like you forgot who you were about a year ago! All of a sudden you morphed into this PC gaming archetype. All you ever do is bitch and moan constantly.

I become a fanboy of whatever I own. I was a Sony fanboy from 98 to 08 up until my PS3 upchucked. Same when I got my 360 to replace it (and still have it, just collects dust).
Since I got my PC, I just morphed into this PC fanboy mode.
Despite all the ragging I do on the 'peasant consoles', a part of me wants to buy a PS3 again, it has a lot of exclusives I'd like to play. I think I will wait until the next console gen to consider getting a console. For now, I have a shit-ton of PC games to play.
But I still think that consoles do dumb down many games, and you'll notice if you played the original PC exclusives. Play FEAR 1 vs. FEAR 2 and don't tell me that FEAR 2 was dumbed down for consoles, I dare you! FEAR 1 was also on consoles, but designed first for PC.

I cant completely accurately comment on that because I while I played FEAR 1 on PC and 360, i got 2 as a birthday gift on 360. So while it didnt seem dumbed down to me on 360 it might have for you on PC. But even so, the only thing I could see dumbed down was the tilt/peek over corners thing which was sad to lose, but they improved upon the original in a number of ways, particularly the cover interactions.

tigre, not only did you completely bullsh#t when you said the pc didnt get a sequal,(even though the sequal was arguably better, with a more refined gameplay experience). But even with a 22mil budget for the game and 2-3million sold.
thats only 120-160million in profit(taking into account a 20-50 price range over time).
pretty sure thats a successful game (and especially so for a new ip) for a PC, much less any of the consoles.
But of course, we can just throw that out, and say that the PC market is crap, even though the most technical game to date was a smash success on it.

I've never been a PC gamer? Really? I don't know how old you are but I've been playing computer games and console games since I was practically born. I remember playing this old Tie FIghter game that spanned across multiple floppy discs to install! It's not like PC gaming is this mythological beast that console gamers have never been privy to. lol.
When I go off on a stupid rant I get called out on it ... I get called when I don't go on a stupid rant. You've been going on a lot of them lately and I'm telling you it's annoying and has become unbearable. You've turned into a PC gaming darsh here lately. You turn everything into us against them and it's completely unnecessary. Scale it back a little bit ... pull it back together. You can be an enthusiast without being a smarmy prick.

I have also played game quite early since I was born in 87. My first platforms were an Atari (I don't remember) NES and PC, which I remember the most. I grew up on DOS games like Wolf 3D, Hexen, Heretic, Commander Keen, Jazz Jackrabbit, Rise of the Triad, Duke 1/2/3D, etc. All these games from Epic, Apogee, ID Software. The PC holds a special place in my heart. Then from my adolesecent to early adult years, it was PS1/PS2/PSP.
My gaming life has been about a 50/50 mix of console and PC. But my early childhood is what I treasure the most and which I spent with PC.
I'll tell you that I'm not completely off consoles like Sprinkles is off Sony. I guess I am in PC insane doucheboy mode right now and I said I am considering a console again when the next-gen comes or even break down and get a PS3 again. Unfortunately, I have many PC games to play, massive backlog and less time to play any games.

I don't know about you guys, but I LOVE GAMES/MOVIES SET IN NYC!
With me living there, it's great to try and see familiar places.
GTA 4 was amazing in that way, and I hope with Crysis 2 coming out, I can feel that nostalgia again.
To all the people going "well since you LIVE THERE, why don't you actually VISIT THE LANDMARKS?!?!?"
Of course, I like physically visiting the landmarks in person, but it just feels nice to look at a game/movie and say: OMG I WAS STANDING RIGHT THERE!

That's definately a possibility. Crysis was optimized for PC's with 2gb(or more) of ram and another 512mb(or more) just for video, so it would be difficult to render both cutting edge graphics and large open environments when constrained to the much smaller memory footprints of the consoles.

Maybe it'll be for the better. It'll allow them to craft a more cinematic and streamlined experience and focus on the story more so than just the tech behind the game. I'm sure PC gamers will still have a big sandbox to create stuff in and play until their little hearts are content like the first game had. EA wants to expand the game (more importantly the engine) to a wider scale of consumers and licensees. I don't see why the game will be gimped, it's not like open world sandbox games haven't been done on the consoles, this seems more like an intentional design decision.
Reply
Posted: Feb 15th 2010 10:55PM CaramelZappa said
RIght, not saying the decision is a bad one. Just that the reason may lie not only in general game design but in hardware constraints as well. I don't think it's coincidence that the first time Crytek has worked on consoles is also the first time they've created a game without sandbox environments.
I do think if they're going to make it more linear and constrained the need to vastly improve the AI, as the sandbox style of the first game is part of what really made up for the sub-par AI.

Did anyone play Crysis for, or care about it's story? No way, it's draw was always the graphics and the sandbox. It doesn't seem like it will have either now/ They might be 1680x1050 16x anti ali, but it's still gonna be a city. I'll take a beautiful jungle with luscious vegetation and crystal clear water over dirty streets and the hudson river anyday, even if it does have a crappy story.

Maybe this will be the game where people start to care about the story? I'm sure they want the franchise to mean more than purdy gfx and big 'splosions. I think it's a little pre-mature to assume that this was done because of an scale issue with consoles. Also, the line "a New York City like none in games or cinema" could mean that it is overgrown by vegetation ... it could mean ANYTHING.

FarCry 1 was also about the graphics and technical prowess, the story, not really. The characters and bad voice acting were hilarious though, I wanted to see a true sequel to Far Cry, not the sequel abortion. I can guarantee the story will play a larger part in Crysis 2. All I want to see is at least part of the game telling us what happens after the cliffhanger of 1 and for there to be many more mods and custom levels with the Sandbox editor the PC version will surely get. If the 360/PS3 also get the level editor, that would be cool too to share levels and creations.
There is a video on Youtube showing the cross-platformness of the Sandbox level editor, whatever was edited on the PC showed up on the 360/PS3 in real-time.
The video is below.

@Tigre dammit you're right! I also saw a commercial for bioshock 2 that said it was the coolest game ever! i guess that must be true too! Clearly it's just marketing hype that their version is going to be the best ever. If it means anything, it'll probably be that it's a full NYC with every building and not a scale like most games, but probably not even that. Also, maybe people do want more than graphics and explosions, but not at the expense of the graphics and explosions

I don't think Crytek has ever made a game with a compelling story. I doubt that'll magically change now. Like Batman said, it's all about the sandbox. (Though I'd argue it was more about the physics, nanosuit, and sandbox than the graphics)
Do you honestly believe that the PS3 and 360 can handle the Cryengine at it's fulland have huge open environments like the first game? The games that are able to pull of ridiculous graphics on consoles small memory footprints do it by constraining movement to smaller areas so the console does not have to render as much. I believe you're very misinformed if you think there's no technical limitations to consider in Crysis 2's level design.

Of course not, that'd be silly. They could have huge open environments but it wouldn't have as much detail as say Crysis on max settings, not anywhere close. You'd get still images that looked the same but in motion the difference would be quite obvious. I'm not even saying the game will have a good story or that they aren't gimping it because of the consoles. I'm saying ... it could be any number of things and we won't know until it releases. Maybe they have something cool in store for this one ... no one knows.
@Batman
I'm going to laugh if they drop pandorum in the middle of NYC. Then, I'm going to point at you and laugh like Nelson.
