In the five-ish years since the Xbox 360 launched, ushering in the current console generation, we've heard a whole mess of talk about this console life cycle pushing past the usual five-ish years they tend to span. Given that we're approaching the mark as we speak, MCV talked to execs from the big three and got an update on where each stands in terms of new hardware in the coming year(s). "The benefit of hardware remaining relevant for longer is the fact that it gives more developers a chance to get the very best and most out of current generation systems, rather than the cycle changing just as people have become used to maximizing a console's performance and abilities," says senior product manager at Nintendo UK Rob Lowe. "We strongly believe that there is still huge potential for both Wii and DS to continue to bring in new gamers and change rejecters' perceptions." Watch your back, rejecters!
Perhaps unsurprisingly at this point, Sony and Microsoft corroborate Lowe's claims, with VP of Sony Worldwide Studios Michael Denny adding, "Of course new hardware causes a large spike in consumer interest, but so does the launch of new, exciting games ... Modern Warfare 2 didn't need new hardware to break all the records." And with two new motion ... things coming to Sony and Microsoft's consoles -- not to mention the worldwide economy still struggling to recover from a near-meltdown -- we have to imagine that we won't be seeing any new $400 to $600 hardware anytime soon.
But hey, there's always 3D to take our money, right?

Duke, did you feel that the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube were holding you back on visuals, sound, or the ability to give an immersive game-play environment back in 2005 on the cusp of the 360's launch?
Since you guys haven't seen anything better, your fine with what you have now. When you see the tech demos for the next systems, then you think your systems are inadequate.

Exactly. Look back in the Joystiq archives circa 2005/2006 and you'll see the exact same comments being made regarding PS3 and 360. Once people get their eyeballs on the new hardware, they change their tune right-quick.
...although I have a feeling that MS and Sony are going to take Nintendo-esque half-steps this time around so as to not go back into the red after they just got into the black.

I see what you were trying to do there with second guessing me, but actually yes, I did. I was primarily a PC gamer who also had the PS2 and XBox - which I found to both be less attractive in both graphics as well as interaction. I knew they could do better and was really hoping for it. Then, both those manufacturers did improve greatly with the next console, including making online gaming much more comfortable.
Yes, I am sure the next console gen will have new things I will want - but just like 1080p isn't a big enough difference from 720p when I buy a tv, I am just not too concerned with a small step forward.

nerdydesi, you do realize that the jump from last gen to this one ushered in HD visuals...don't you?
Of course that was a huge leap in technology. Any idiot could see that. However, the only thing on the horizon that might have a chance of being that big is 3D gaming, which the PS3 can apparently add in a firmware patch.
You also have to take into account how many people are actually going to be early adopters of 3D tvs and tech...which probably won't be many, atleast within the first few years.

Honestly, that's idiotic. I've played Crysis on my high end PC, and even if the next generation of consoles can improve on those graphics by a fair amount, I am still consistently impressed with the graphics in a good half of titles being released! I bought an older 360 game that was on sale for $10 that came out in 2007, still impressed by those graphics!
Maybe the current high end PC games aren't the best example as there's still stuff like Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain coming out that are pretty competitive graphically with the highest end stuff on PC...
Still, I can even appreciate the graphics in Splinter Cell 1 for Xbox 1 on a technical level, I don't think graphics improvements are going to pull anyone but the biggest graphics whores anymore.

i think 3 years is about right. by that time current gen systems will be 7-8 years old. that's almost a decade, and thats a lot in computer years.
i think you got down voted because people are happy with their systems right now and don't want to upgrade, but i think once pc tech increases and they can see the difference between pc games and the current gen consoles they will want.

There's already a HUGE, HUGE difference in PC and consoles in terms of power. The problem is that extremely few games on the PC take advantage of that power and most games on it are console ports which of course don't take advantage.
The focus for developers is on the outdated consoles, not the much more powerful PC so that's why you can't really see it shine and console gamers don't see the big deal.
Lets see your consoles do something like THIS! : )

The building itself looks great, but the all the edges + the piles of dirt on the ground look like crap.
But I agree - we do need a new console generation in 2 years time.
These current gen consoles are too old now in terms of tech.
4 years in the tech industry is a very long time.
The next gen consoles should be launched in 2012 imo.

I'm with you 100% on this.
So far, each console generation iteration has represented a MAJOR jump forward:
- 8 bit graphics on the NES to 16 on the SNES was huge.
- Hardware 3d acceleration and 32 bit color on the PSX/N64 was huge.
- The shift from CDs/carts to DVDs, as well as the shift to DX8ish hardware acceleration was huge for the xbox/ps2/cube.
- The shift to HD, fully programmable shaders, and "DX9+" quality graphics was huge for the ps3/360.
DX10 just isn't that different from DX9c. There hasn't been a huge jump in graphic fidelity, poly counts, shader quality, or really anything to justify new consoles. The 360 could stand to see a redesign/case reduction maybe, but that's about it.
Now HANDHELD systems are way behind the curve. The PSP needs to be updated to compete with what the iphone can do, and the DS . . . well, the DS just needs to be updated to fit into the 21st century.
And I refuse to get an ipod touch or an iphone for gaming. Touchscreens have their uses, but video game systems need some damn BUTTONS.

The ellipsis (thats the "...," or "dot, dot, dot" thingy) indicates that what follows was preceded by other, less important text, i.e the beginning of the sentence or in this case song phrase, therefore, what follows is not the beginning of the sentence.
The more you know...

I agree. I started playing Oblivion again and can''t help but sit there for a moment in anvil and look at the beautiful sun set or the bright blue skies. Sure the game has aged a bit and shows it but damnit it's still beautiful.

I really don't feel like I need new hardware yet. I'm pretty satisfied with the experiences I'm getting with both the PS3 and 360. I'm sure games can get better looking and more complex, I think I can wait at least a couple of more years before dropping serious cash on new consoles.

I'm happy to hear them say that. I'm not ready for a new generation. I got my PS3 in 2007 yet for some reason it still feels really fresh, unlike previous generations when 3 or so years later I was ready for a new one.

Also, I don't really care for better graphics than what is currently offered. I just don't see how more realism could make a big difference.
Then again that could just be my bank account speaking...

I'm with you Traceur, ever since MGS4/inFamous came out last year, there are just too many good games on the PS3 to keep up. The PSN is really starting to shine as well with some top quality different games out there. With what I've seen in the past 6 months, I'm good with that kind of quality for the next 4-5 years.
Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2, Buzz: Quiz TV, Killzone 2, and Ratchet and Clank have been fantastic.
Add in all the multi-plat titles such as AssCreed2, Bioshock2, Borderlands, Arkham Asylum, Modern Warfare 2, Bayonetta and Darksiders and you've got more great games that you can shake a stick at.
With Last Guardian, Heavy Rain and God of War III coming very soon, I need to have the discipline of a lvl 20 monk to ensure I maintain some kind of social life.

How's backwards compatibility going to turn out the next time? SONY!?!?!?

Because you clearly don't understand what the issue was with BC on the PS3 in the first place.
Obviously, it was available on the launch consoles. But they had to remove it because it was causing performance and stability issues on the console as a whole.
So what would you have rather had? A working BC console for 5 months or a fully functional console sans BC for 5+ years?

Look nerdy, let me set the scene for you:
You just walked out (Big Box retailer) with your brand new (Xbox 360, PS3). You take it home and hook it up. Now, what's the first thing you do?
Are you going to:
A:) Throw in Jet Moto/Blinx
B:) Fire up Resistance Fall of Man/Perfect Dark Zero!!!
Come on, it's obvious. And on top of that, if you REALLY, REALLY want to play your PS2/Xbox games, just hook up the respective system and play them! It takes 5 minutes!
Hell, I still have my NES,SNES,N64, GCN, Genesis, Dreamcast, PSX, PS2 systems all hooked up IN ADDITION to all 3 new consoles. Real gamers know what's up.

BC was not removed for performance or stability, it was removed to save money. The EE (Emotion Engine) was not free; they tried to go free (software emulation) and that failed miserably...so they cut that out as well.
I think it's crap that they whipped MS for cutting it out, but the only reason Sony won by default was because they had it longer before they completely removed it.
IMHO I could care less about BC. I didn't buy a Ps3 to play Ps2 games even though I can. Besides that, I can't transfer my memory card saves to the Ps3 anyway, which is why I've held onto my Ps2 slim. (and PsOne)

re: Ps4 BC
It would have to be based on Cell, and possibly also the RSX.
I believe word is that nVidia will be supplying the Ps3 successor's gpu, so that eliminates 1 hurdle.
Given that IBM is still working on the PPC architecture of which Cell is based, it's possible that a Cell successor could also end up in the Ps4 (unless it ends up being a cpu+gpu single die based solution like nV and also Intel are trying to come up with in the PC field.
Maybe I'm a minority but BC still doesn't matter to me. I learned a long time ago (after a lifetime, basically) not to sell my old games and consoles if I'll ever play them again...I have no desire to get rid of my PsOne, Ps2 slim, or my Ps3. They can put full BC in the Ps4, I won't care either way though.

When there will be a next generation of consoles, can we expect a large jump in graphical horsepower or two PS3s and 360s taped together?
And MS, lets try to make some better quality consoles hmm? We can wait, don't gimp the quality please.
