BAFTA video game award nominees announced

The BAFTA awards represent a rare opportunity to get the thrill of watching your favorite high-profile games rack up more plaudits long after the end of the year. They also represent the opinions of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, but whatever. The nominations for the 2009 awards have been released, with mostly unsurprising games occupying the "Best Game" category -- Batman, Assassin's Creed II, Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Joystiq.com Game of the Year 2009 Uncharted 2 -- and FIFA 2009.

In the "people's choice" GAME Awards, all of the Best Game nominees but Left 4 Dead 2 make repeat appearances, joined by The Beatles: Rock Band, GTA Chinatown Wars, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Street Fighter IV, and Wii Sports Resort. "Everyone's" tastes are much more diverse! See more nominations for specific genres and achievements at the BAFTA site. The winners will be revealed in an award ceremony on March 19.

Fifa 2010*

My vote goes to Batman or AC2. Uncharted 2 could beat both of those but I have yet to play it. I honestly do not think MW2 deserves it.

I can't stand award shows, not even ones about video games.

FIFA? really? errr, some of the slower people must of been voting this year. Think we can all expect MW2 to win then!

I don't think a sports games can even compete in such category and MW2 was mediocre at best.

Even with it's flaws MW2 is far from mediocre. That's a totally idiotic comment.

As for MW2, my opinion of it remains unchanged.

With all due respect, I think that it doesn't make sense for you to criticize nominee choices based on your "opinion".

They don't pick the nominees based on what you like because, and again I mean no disrespect, no one cares what you think.

The only relevant thing is what your objective belief is about the quality of the game.

For example, I hate Left 4 Dead 2 because it's not my thing, but I still believe it deserves the nomination.

To say any of these best game nominees are "mediocore at best" is I think letting your personal opinion take over your objective belief.

In ideal world, yes, but in reality people's opinions is all we have. Sadly (or thankfully) there is no scientific way of measuring how good the game is, it is determined by collection of multitude of factors highly susceptible to bias. Whether they're 12 years old and just got their first console or well beyond thirty and have a degree in journalism, it's still their opinion. Sometimes people agree, sometimes they don't. I have my reasons for not liking MW2 just as you may for thinking its the best game of 2009.

You have to play a lot of bad football games, and play them a lot, to realise what a fantastic job they did with FIFA10. The control, balance, AI, presentation, online - the game is simply stunning for those who are heavily into football. Which is most of the world.

For me, Uncharted 2 should win GOTY, but I have to admit to sinking more hours into MW2 MP and FIFA10 local MP.

Not sure if a Jan 2010 game qualifies for the 2009 awards.

But where's my person GOTY; Dragon Age: Origins?

yea.. where is dragons age under best game?

I am just interested to see the outcome.... its seems like in the USA most awards are straight forward, with little to argue about. But the EUR seems to be different....I can see Just Dance doing alot of damage in this awards.

Modern Warfare definitely does not deserve it.

But it will win.

I dunno, Uncharted 2 did very well in general with awards, so I'm thinking it could edge out MW2.

Why doesn't it deserve it?
It sold more copies than any other game that year, it continues to have 1tens of thousands of people playing it each night.
You just don't think it deserves it because you don't like the multiplayer.

Sales numbers isn't an indicator of how good the game is. The 1st and 2nd Transformers made a gazillion dollars at the box office but would you give Michael Bay an Oscar for best director?
MW2 was just MW1 with more weapons and perks. It was a solid multiplayer shooter with a mediocre campaign and that's about it.

Isn't this a little too late? I'm mean, all the other awards are over and done with.

ya, im done with 2009, bring on 2010.
