Dante's Inferno is to God of War what Uncharted is to Tomb Raider

By that logic you could just say Tomb Raider was a rip off of Indian Jones.

Besides Uncharted and Tomb Raider are searching for some pricey(spooky) artifact, the similarities end there. Uncharted has a few platforming and puzzles, but most time you are shooting bad guys. TR it's completely different, when during the whole game you kill only a hand full of enemies, but most of time you are doing puzzles and platforming.

I love both franchises. Can't wait for a new TB and Uncharted game.

If this is so, I'd just like to say to those who called 'rip off' on Quantum Theory in compasison to Gears, you are wrong, face it, QT is a new and very different game to Gears and this is why you should consider buying it :)

I really really like this article. I'm of the school of thought where the more the merrier! I wish there were more Final Fantasy-type games (like Lost Odyssey), I wish there were more Pokemon-type games. I mean HECK! Facebook proves that rehashing the same great idea continue to be very well accepted (e.g. [insert random word]Ville or [insert random word]Wars) lol

As a consumer, I like having choices and options. While the diehard fanboys rant about this game copying their beloved franchise, I'll continue to enjoy playing both games.

First, the article is right. There's no grounds for any type of lawsuit involving the games.

But, to those saying that this game isn't even a copy of GoW, that "GoW didn't invent the hack and slash genre", and all that.. come on.

There have been tons of games inspired by God of War but Dante's is a complete rip off. It's identical. The gameplay mechanics, the feel of the game, the UI, etc. This game was blatantly made to bring in an already existing audience.

Look at a game like Force Unleashed. That was also a God of War inspired game, but at least the setting was vastly different and the gameplay was changed a *little* bit. (even if it was changed for the worse)

Anyway,.. i'm not saying that this makes Dante's a bad game. In fact, if I was a particular fan of God of War, i'd be tickled pink at the prospect of having 2 GoW games coming out the same year.

Good read indeed. Glad to hear a sane voice tell it like it is. Dante is similar to God of War YES, but no where near a rip off. Reading some of the reviews out there I really feel like the reviewers are brand new to the Video Games. When one developer makes a successful(and enjoyable) game other Developers take notice and try and build upon and offer similar products to compete...not rip them off. it is the same thing every single industry on earth does.

First, what did GOW bring to the third person button mashing genre. The only thing I can think of is the Quick Time Events. When you really break down GOW mechanic, everything else have been done within the genre by other games. I will say that GOW did a very good job with the story which is what the game excelled at, not its gameplay mechanic.

I still wonder why if they're so goddamn identical, why is everyone complaining?

It just boils down to sheer fanboyism. So, let's take what everyone is saying and put it into context: "Dante's Inferno is exactly the same as God of War". Ok, we've got that. But God of War is an awesome game, is it not? So if these two games are pretty much one in the same, why is Dante's Inferno such a terrible game? Is it because it's also available for the 360? Is that where all this hatred is stemming from? Is it because NO other system could possibly be allowed to have a game the calibur of God of War? Because you, the all-knowing gamer won't allow it? I mean, what is the REAL issue here? Did anyone here have a personal hand in making the game? Are you losing money from the game? Is EA infringing on your rights by "stealing" the game engine?

Ask yourself these questions and then tell me what the big deal is. Rent the game, buy the game. Enjoy it or hate it and then move on. I can't believe that this "war" has gotten everyone in such an uproar. It's completely ridiculous.

Storm Eagle you said everything I wanted to say in a comment on this article. I don't see what the big deal is either, and I'm curious as to where all this comes from.

The irony that your video link to HVGN could be construed as a blatant rip-off of Angry Video Game Nerd, is awesome.

anyone remember where GOW got some of its ideas from ,it also borrowed from an early games .so lets not get all upset about some new game doing the same thing GOW did also.

Would it be wrong to say that just about every game today is "ripping off" of another?

Look at Shadow Complex. The most common reference people were making were either between Super Metroid (or Metroid altogether) or Symphony of the Night, simply because of the "look and feel." Hell, Symphony of the Night had direct influence from Super Metroid. It took the exact gameplay mechanics of Metroid and had breathed new life into the franchise, and it's been the mainstay of the series today.

Halo took influence from Half-Life, which took inspiration from Golden Eye. Bayonetta took influence from Devil May Cry (yes, I know, Hideki Kamiya is the father of both franchises, but he said he played DMC4 to get "inspiration" for Bayonetta).

If you're creating a game in a certain genre - or sub-genre - your game is going to look and play just like previous entries. Hack-n-slash games are going to be just like Devil May Cry or God of War. 2D exploration games will look and play just like Metroid. FPS games are going to be incredibly similar to every FPS game there is.

There is no question to "copyright infringement;" every video game is going to take inspiration from somewhere, no matter if it's a new or established IP. The only problem is that the sub-genre of "stylized hack-n-slash" games is fairly new - less than 10 years old, starting with DMC1 - and there are only about 4 IPs that can be placed there: Devil May Cry, God of War, Bayonetta and Dante's Inferno.

People are going to make brash accusations of someone copying someone else's work, especially in a young genre. There just isn't that much headroom for a new game in a new genre before people start yelling "rip-off."

in my opinion fanboys will always complain. i played Dante's Inferno and I had a blast. it is a good game. these people should just stop comparing games. GOW was not the first in its genre. all games will mimic the other, some will hit the mark and some will make it worse. those fanboys should be glad that is similar to GOW. same goes to those reviewers , stop comparing games and rate the games for its quality and NOT because it is similar to another game. I love GOW and I did liked and appreciate Dante's because it played like GOW. AND A PLUS FOR THE NUDITY. they should do more games like it.

It was more so with Saint's Row 1. Everything was a rip off, even down to the health/shield/weapon bar. Yet, GTAIV went on to not only sell a gazillion more copies but establish itself as one of the highest rated games of all time. Didn't make either game necessarily suck though is my point.

People seem to neglect the fact that there's only so many buttons on a controller. That makes it extremely difficult to come up with entirely new gameplay mechanics especially with heavy hack and slash games that have tons of combos. And, when you get right down to the brass tacks, do you really want each game to create its own unique mechanics? Buttons having similar meanings across games makes it extremely easy to pick up a new game and just start playing, instead of spending hours familiarizing yourself with what buttons do what, first.
