Speaking to the Telegraph at Microsoft's X10 event, Lionhead's Peter Molyneux has called on the UK government to give tax breaks to local game studios. Said Molyneux, "It is just crazy that the British government does not recognize the games industry as a creative industry in the way it recognizes others," noting that Canada recently replaced the UK as the third largest games industry in the world. He noted that many measures taken by Canada have been proven to be "financially sensible."
Molyneux's words contribute to escalating pleas for government support in the UK. Over the past year, the issue has been consistently pursued by the industry, with developers calling for tax breaks, and the government in turn asking for evidence of how such breaks would culturally enrich the country. Meanwhile, an August report noted that the production of original IP was declining and suggested that developers might be willing to take risks on original ideas with tax cuts in place.
Molyneux probably sums up the situation best: "The UK has a great heritage of invention and creativity, it's just the rest of the world have a great heritage of recognizing that properly and it frustrates the hell out of me."

Person comes out in favor of the government giving him a handout at taxpayer expense. Surprising?

Well considering Just Dance was on the top of the UK charts for far too long, we have to assume that something is a bit wrong in the UK industry.

That's nice.
He'll probably tell the government that bringing the games industry to the UK will bring the dead back to life, cure cancer, and turn water into liquid gold.
....and then apologize when all that doesn't happen.

Old, but still so relevant. I can't wait till Fable 3 comes out and see what doesn't get delivered there. I personally think Molyneux is an absolute toss, one of the worst high profile people in the industry.

Not like Molyneux is the only one to not deliver in his games.

He is hardly the worst, I mean at least his games are all still good (IMO, brilliant, but that's me).
It's not like he's promising you the world and giving you a speck of dirt. He's just got an overactive imagination and a deficiency with his brain/mouth barrier.

Moly is far from the worse game dev out there. Its not like he is a terrorist or anything. The only thing he is really guilty of is failing to understand that technology isnt up to his ideas yet. He reminds me of myself: has a lot of geniunely great ideas, goes on and on about them exciting the crap out of everyone, but his implementation is usually less stunning. You can see what he wanted to do, but hes not quite there.
That being said, Fable 1/2 are far from being bad games, me and my friends all enjoyed both of them greatly. In fact, Fable 2 is one of only 3 games my entire circle of friends own. I really dont know what molyneux did to make you think hes "the worse ever." Its not like he promised you gold and gave you a pile of crap, he promised you gold and gave you a shiny piece of silver. Most people would frown and then go "meh, still pretty cool" but apparently your brain is incapable of going past "frown."
For the record, Denis Dyack is a far worse dev. 10 years spend on Too Human for the end results? Laughable.

R: well, there is a saying: good ideas are a dime a dozen, it's the execution that counts.
Fable 2 is one of those game that polarises people; you need to be emotionally involved in the world to really enjoy it. There is a lot to be said about having a world full of people that you can influence, towns to explore and jobs and quests to do, but the implementation is basically a series of minigames from a 1980's arcade wrapped around with a 3d facade. I mean, there's only so many times you can 'make someone love you' by doing the fart emotion over and over again before it wears a bit thin, you know?

Just been doing this in a Media Production lecture at my uni..
In the lecture it was mentioned that the government intervene/support the film industry more, because its a market that is hard to have a high influence in world market (specifically as American films dominate the world market atm), the games industry in the UK is apparently doing fine, and therefore needs no intervention/support.
Bottom line is that the government does recognise the games industry as a leading form of entertainment, and a form in which is doing extremely well.. which is precisely (in their opinion) why it makes little sense to give them tax cuts..
(apologies for any inaccuracies in this text, its 5:00am here and have just come back from an intense night out)

Its more complicated than most people realize. The comment which spoke to the fact that asking the Tax payers of a country to prop up companies is part of it, but only part. In my experiance more often you seen industries which large numbers of people depend on for their livelyhoods which have historically been strong contributors to the economy get subsidized to ensure they stay in place. This is done so that a pillar of your nation's livelyhood does not fall out leading to widespread unemployment and national decay. The other situation would be to install an industry into your nation, so the industrys you have historically depended on have fallen out of sustainability. You make your country an attactive place for a new growing industry to come and set up so that you build a new pillar into your economy create jobs and attract business which did not have offices in your country previously. As this can have a destabilizing effect on the world economy organizations like the World Trade Organization exist.
Short answer Moly needs to think about why subsidies exist before troubling an overburdened system by asking for cash something I am pretty sure Lionhead is not hurting for.
And to those whould flame me I understand there are other reasons for subsidies, but I don't feel that Peter has described one seeing as I don't feel the UK economy is heavily dependant on the Games Industry.

Yenrab and others.. how is asking to keep some of your own earnings stealing from people? Again, Im not sure what socialist hole you crawled out of, but I call it freedom. Thomas Jefferson Said: "A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government" This article is not talking about a bail out (Which is what socialist Governments do ala Brown/Obama) it is asking to reduce its tax burden. Wise up sir.
