How hard is it to make an external digital/analog TV turner that works in the US? I'm not asking export shows to external storage, or export them to my PSP, or cut out commercials, or anything like that. Just let me watch live TV through my PS3, and let me record shows that I can come back and watch when I want.

There are probably hundreds of TV tuner cards and PC software programs out there that do this and do it legally. Why in the world can't they get one out for the US market? I would seriously buyi one if they did.

Even if Cablevision continues to make more and more channels only viewable if you pay the monthly fee for a cable box. >_

Really, Jerry?

I'm surprised you could afford a TV since you have to upgrade that rig, what?...

Every three months? (PC: It Only Does Everything... until technology moves on.)

Wiizer where do you get this "upgrade needed every three months" idea? I don't know any other pc gamers who upgrade that often nor do I. In fact for games made for all the systems (PC, 360, PS3) I won't need to upgrade a single piece of hardware till the next consoles come out to run the game at max settings.

Even for games that do push the boundaries if you're not obsessed with running everything maxed there is no reason to upgrade anywhere near that often. Just because you don't play on pc is no reason to insult it with "facts" you pull out of thin air.

Wiizer, I'd just like yo point out you're as much of a fanboy as Jerry.
My e4400/HD2600 Pro rig with a 945PL motherboard (ie cheapish parts from 2006-7) can run anything I throw at it in medium or high detail. And it can emulate a PS2 (albeit not all games run well).

It's a myth that PCs need to be upgraded lots or cost thousands of dollars. My computer was about AU$400 (new PS3 games here cost $90-$120), and you only need to upgrade the GPU once, halfway through the console cycle (about AU$100 for a nice one)

It's just people who know nothing about computers rushing out and buying one without doing their research that spread this image of PCs being expensive. They're not.

Console gaming costs me about $600 in hardware, about every 6-7 years.

I already have a TV for my family.

Now that I use a laptop that isn't as suitable for modern gaming, the cost of hardcore PC gaming is simply a lot more than that. I like my laptops to have long battery life and be inexpensive. I don't want or need a desktop because everything I would do on one my PS3 does very well.

Not saying that's the way it is for everyone, but it's the reason I think PC gaming is a bit too expensive unless you are cool with game quality that is far, far inferior to PS3.

@Gimboa
I have to disagree.
While laptops are obviously pieces of overpriced junk (for gaming, anyway), you can build a PC that is more powerful than a PS3 for roughly the same price (exc. screen and speakers). The specs are in the Whirlpool wiki somewhere and it can run Crysis in high detail.

@ Esposch

I was tempted to let you guys duke it out (since this wasn't the original topic of discussion for my post), but I just wanted to interject. Alienware's M11x ultraportable laptop is a work of genius. It's an 11" laptop with rather high end specs, switchable graphics to save battery when not gaming, and a weight that still keeps it portable. Best part? It starts at $800. Mass Effect 2 on the go in a state that's comparable to the 360? You bet.

This whole page is totally pointless for us who live outside of Japan because "You should also know that this is designed for Japanese terrestrial TV signals, and isn't likely to work outside of that country." =.=;

FWIW there is actually a law (in Australia anyway) specifically legalising recording of TV programs. Then again, it's also legal here to rip legal CD's to out iPods and bypass region coding.

Although, to be fair, DDR on the PSP would have been pretty much impossible.

We played around a bit with this on display, and I have to say - the interface is FAST and slick. The program listing is probably the nicest I`ve seen on a recorder or tuner. We have a dedicated recorder but are still picking this up because it was just so much faster and cooler (and cheap). It also supports USB HDDs, so you can increase your storage without having to change out the PS3 HDD.

Now that the US has terrestrial digital TV, I'm hopeful that a similar device will come to this country. Not for me - I usually just download the two or three TV shows I watch a week so my Mom can enjoy her stories ;P.

On another note, Spanish television is HOT. I have to look away from the TV in teenager-like shame even during news programs since two-out-of-three women are big breasted and wearing something low cut.

I'm seriously debating whether or not to pick this thing up. I live in Japan and already own a PSX back from '04 or '05, which in my opinion is still the analog DVR available. The initial release firmware was so terrible that no matter how much Sony revamped it, the public treated it as a PS2 with a crappy DVR, but I've yet to encounter another recorder that was so speedy at editing out commercials; the emotion engine could render still frames faster than any other device, plus it supported the dualshock,which recognized rapid multiple taps of the buttons.

The second major hardware update(I have the prior one) introduced more PSP friendly functions, but by then the writing was on the wall for analog TV, and I couldn't talk the wife into allowing a third playstation2 in the house.

Granted, now that the recordable media is so cheap I don't bother editing stuff, and since getting my terrestrial digital TV, the PSX, along with my previously purchased PS2, rarely get any use.

If Sony announced a PS3 PSX with a TB class harddrive I'd be all over it
the 500GB HDD in my PS3 is too small for DTV, and keeping an external HDD attached just isn't an elegant solution; the torne AND a HDD? Reminds me of one of those first gen slim vaios that required external connectors that ended up turning it into an octopus just to run it.

But just as the PSP's never integrated JPN specific one seg TV inside of it, I doubt Sony would be willing to make a new JPN PS3 PSX...

Seems like a PlayTV replacement. About fscking time! I hope the software part of this product is a whole lot more XMB-streamlined than that annoying and confusing piece of crap that comes with PlayTV. Also, of course, I hope this will reach Europe and be flexible enough to cover all countries' signals.

If SCE would just embed this into every PS3, they'd soon take over the entire DVB-T/C/S market with a cheap and full-blown media center... but that's just SCE marketing in a nutshell, isn't it?
