Could have something to do with playing a video game and shooting a video without a tripod at the same time.

Just a guess...

The original Xbox is the Dreamcast 2 (basically). Part of that history is here:

@ Not THAT Matt,

Actually, it's going to be download only, so you won't really have a chance to hold a case for it. Sorry, man. It kinda disappoints me, too.

Peace,

Looks pretty legit (and good), but I am still bothered by the lack of leg blur while running and the slow spin for the jump animation.

I know that's being nit-picky, but come on Sega - if you're going to go to all this effort to fix the franchise, don't skimp on the small stuff!

I thought I saw hints of leg-blur at 1:05, but if you have to go that fast to trigger it, you probably won't see much of it. As for the spin jump, they have no excuse.

It's funny cause the loading animation with sonic running had that traditional leg blur we know and love, probably cause it was a 2D sprite instead of a 3D model but does give me hope that they can add it to the game...

Now please someone kill me before I wake up from this dream. I just can't believe I'm having hope on a new sonic game :|

I think little by little, Sega is trying to retcon the fact that sonic is not as fast as we once knew. Sonic at the olympics and losing? Sonic in a car? Now Sonic w/o foot blur.

I saw clear leg blurring once Sonic, you know, picked up speed. Don't fault Sega when the guy playing it is sucking tremendously.

Still, I thank this man for the footage. Or his parkinsons-ridden two-year-old, whoever was holding the camera.

yea he seemed to be speeding up and approaching leg blur at one point in the video but the guy ran into something (seriously, he sucks lol). but overall, i feel there should be more anyway (judging from the little i've seen of course). nothing really to say about that jump animation though, it speaks for itself.

I agree... his regular running looks way too slow, and the jumping as well. Once he picks up speed, it looks about right, but I think the lack of leg blur hurts the speedy feel.

They messed up with Smash Bros. They had the nerve to make Sonic fast and awesome. Also, Sonic has driven before http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Drift.

^What are you talking about, the gameplay looks fast and spastic. He didn't seem to be in control of anything he was doing, at all. Granted it is an alpha build, people seem to think Sonic was all about speed and not momentum.

While the background looks lush and all the actual Sonic character looks stiff compared to what we know to be possible from years of exposure to the franchise. The horrible gamer controlling him doesn't help but his own animations look bland to begin with. Even the finger wag on the title screen looks weak. I really liked the DS version of Sonic Rush it wasnt perfect but it felt like a sonic game more than this. It's nice to see another 2D sonic but not if it's going to take such a severe step backward

I was reading through my collection of leaked memo's today and came across something that might be related to this:

"To ********:

Engineering understands it's still too slow but we're having trouble emulating the Genesis' blast processing. We're trying to free up more CPU resources by shifting more processing onto the GPU.

The 360's CPU is certainly powerful but emulating the raw blast processing of the Genesis is proving much more difficult than expected.

Regards,

Or good enough. Sure it isn't exactly a demo meant to show off the finer points of the game but still, it just looks like an HD Sonic 1. And no, that's not a good thing since the first Sonic isn't all that great. A classic, sure, but if Sonic can only be good with such restraints then the series is just in the wrong hands. They have to make the platforming more fun. Haphazardly hopping around and collecting benign rings is quite boring. Really, the bonus levels and the Sonic 3 power ups were just about the best thing about Sonic and they weren't good to begin with.

Of course, those that simply want an HD Sonic 1 will be happy, but frankly what's the point? The art style and graphics are just fine to begin with, never really needed an updated look.

Anyway, I guess it isn't a bad thing at the end of the day if this is just Sonic with new levels. They could have done what they've been doing with it in 3D and no one wins there. At least the rabid fan base will be pleased this time around.

You know, I agree with Massmass, but at this point? Giving us mediocre remakes of Sonic one is a thousand times superior to the shit they've been chucking at us for the past DECADE. So, yes, this is certainly just a copy of a game that was, at best, pretty good. But that also means that the game will probably be, at least, pretty good. I can live with that. Hell, at this point, it's more than I could have hoped for.

@Massmass: You're going to judge the content of an entire game off of the first 5 seconds of the first level of an alpha version? Have you never played the first five seconds of a video game before? It ALWAYS starts out simple before getting more exotic in the later levels.

Seems "ok" from what we get to see of the game there.

Also 5 zones with 4 levels in each, from what I can see there. Which isn't too bad I guess.

Something about the way Sonic was moving seemed off, but I'm hopeful and the game looks to have promise.

They have plenty of time to polish it up, so lets see how it goes. Plus hand cameras are never really good for checking this kind of game out.

My prediction? You add playable Tails and Knuckles to the first episode by buying the second and third episodes, like getting playable knuckles in Sonic 3 when you add Sonic & Knuckles to the mix.
