Sony and MS has different ways they do business when acquiring exclusives.

Sony has well established 1st party support that still seems to be growing.

MS can buy whatever exclusive they want and can market the hell out of a game.

Bottomline they're both successful at what they do and we gamers are having fun with it all. Damn I love being a gamer!

Wait, what? I wouldn't call Final Fantasy XIV an "exclusive" for the PS3 as it's coming out on the PC day one. There's also rumors abound about it being released on the 360 at the same time as well. I'll bet money MS or SE announces the title for the 360 at E3. Which is a good thing for any MMO! I really could care less if they released a version for the Wii. The more the merrier for a game that's looking pretty top notch.

We can't forget about the rabid die hard fans (like myself) of FFXI. If they can nail casual and solo play then they have a contender to go up against WoW, especially if they can migrate XI players to the new MMO. Even better if they can manage to balance solo/party play to give XI fans their grindfest and people who can only manage an hour or so a day something fun to do as well. If you doubt the size and interest of the community for XIV you can just check out sites like Eorzeapedia.

You might not be interested in XIV, sir, but I can assure you there's at least 500K active XI players that are at least mildly intrigued by the new title. Yes, I do have it on pre-order through Amazon and my beta test application submitted :P

Speaking of Sony exclusives, I'd really like to see Motorstorm 3 sometime in the not-to-distant future. It's sad that Studio Liverpool got axed but I hope they will continue to produce Motorstorm/Wipeout. Pacific Rift and Wipeout HD are brilliant games!

The exclusives, whether first, second or third party, are the main reasons I bought a PS3 over a 360. Sure, the 360 has its fair share of great titles that are exclusive, but it just doesn't have the variety I like... plus there's really not a lot of new IPs that AREN'T shooters. Sony has put a lot of effort into getting new stuff out there, as well as keeping up with mainstay series... LBP, Resistance, inFAMOUS, Demon's Souls, WKC, Folklore, Heavenly Sword and others are a few, while keeping up with the likes of Disgaea, Ratchet & Clank and Metal Gear Solid.

And, most of these games just can't be done on the 360 whether it be an issue of technical origin (MGS4 for example) or one of the developer not being able to do what they want with their game (like LBP).

As I said, the 360 still has a good line-up of first party titles... but its just not enough for me to support the system, let alone has enough variety to keep me entertained.

The fact that you listed a whole lot of awesome Sony exclusives without even mentioning Uncharted, Gran Turismo, Killzone, Motorstorm and God of War speaks volumes about how amazing the ps3 exclusives are.

Wait a minute,
One of Sony's biggest games (Uncharted 2) gets a ton of GOTY awards and accolades from all over. Awesome games like Killzone 2, Demon Souls, Heavy Rain Infamous and MGS4 can't be found on any other system including a PC. Sales of the PS3 have consistently been increasing since introduction of the slim, yet you still think he's bitter. I for one am glad that Sony is investing more into first party releases as opposed to third party games, some of which still end up going to the competition anyway.

Sony learned their lesson with the PS2 and PS3 with third-parties. Same lesson Nintendo learned.

Third-party titles aren't their own. There is nothing to stop Mass Effect 4 or Gears or War 4 to become exclusive to the PS4.

First-party titles will always be their own. Halo will alway be MSs, Grand Turismo Sony's, Mario Nintendos.

If you are going to spend millions of dollars of exclusivity of a third-party title, that same money might be better spent making a God of War, Heavy Rain or Uncharted.

Third-party exclusives are a waste of money.

So where does the fact that typically 360 version of games significantly outsell the PS3 version of games come in?

It's all about the initial install base, console familiarity, and marketing. Take the recent NBA sponsorship by Microsoft for Final Fantasy XIII as an example. Not once in any of the commercials aired during the game did they mention the game being released on the PS3. For someone with no knowledge of the series this can be misleading and can affect their choice when buying the game. They might think that the game is only coming out on the 360 and buy it for that console instead of for the PS3. Not everyone is as knowing about these things as the majority of us are.

IMO I think it was dubious of Microsoft to not even include the PS3 logo at the end of commercials. It really reeked of MS trying to make FFXIII seem like a 360 "exclusive". Squeenix is a little responsible for this as well, but at the end of the day it's MS's marketing dollars at work. Even the omission of "Only on XBOX 360" doesn't help because, like I said, there's NO mention of it being released on the PS3 in those ads.

That's the major difference between Sony and MS. MS excels like no other at advertising their games and pushing them out there, whereas Sony depends on the quality of the game and more word of mouth advertising.

If you don't advertise the general population isn't going to know about it, plain and simple.

@kodros most people just see sheer numbers and base their opinions off that. like how many people believe the 360 is outselling the PS3, but all they look at is the NPD numbers and dont look at the big picture of world wide sales.

@ tony: sure it's important to consider world wide sales, but that's not to understate the importance of the NPD. the U.S. games market accounts for far larger sales numbers than japan or europe. i don't think that any console has ever "won" the sales game without garnering the most sales in the U.S.

I see where they're coming from, but securing some of those third-party exclusives for their own platform would be greatly appreciated by their audience too. If I didnt have a 360, I would be sad that I coulnt play Splinter Cell and Mass Effect. The best 360 exclusives in my opinion are the third-party ones.

...so you want Microsoft to start including a Sony logo at the end of their ads when the game is multiplat? Interesting. I wish you success with that.

If MS markets their system and games better, is that somehow sneaky or evil?

Like the smart people are saying, Microsoft do it one way, Sony do it another, they both end up with amazing exclusives. Some of my favourite games are multiplat but in general, exclusives are normally the pinnacle of gaming and make up a lot of my favourite games. And this goes for all exclusives too. I'm not a big pc gamer but I can appreciate how amazing Blizzard games (and all the other PC only games) are for the people who love them, and even though I don't particularly like the Wii, games like Galaxy and Twilight Princess are incredible, some of the best I have played this gen.

I do think though that Sony's exclusives are the cream of the crop. They just seem to have this feeling that you know you're playing a playstation exclusive. The first time I played Uncharted 1 when I first got my ps3, I was blown away. Saying that but, the two games I anticipate the most this year are Conviction and Alan Wake. Gotta love being a gamer.

Sony knows they cant compete with MS in a spending contest. They made a decision to spend the bulk of their development money internally so they don't have a repeat of Devil may Cry, Tekken, Final Fantasy etc ... They are spending money on IPs they'll own. We've seen instances where it didn't translate into sales, like Heavenly Sword & Folklore, and examples where they have an IP for years to come like Uncharted & Little Big Planet. Also, MS is still trying to establish itself this generation so they are making it rain on developers to get that market share. I can understand why Sony felt jaded after they lost all the high profile 3rd party exclusives that I mentioned. They're thinking that they'll make sure they own whatever they find from now on instead of just for a limited time frame. This could have an affect on MS in the future when they no longer want to bid against themselves for exclusives they won't own. Who knows?

Sony's learning what Nintendo learned two generations ago: third parties are fickle, and you can't rely on them in the long term

Though the present of the industry is defined by system-selling first party titles at this point. Nintendo has changed the rules of the game again, and first party is back on top.

Most of my games for each system I own are exclusives, so I tend to agree. The Ratchet and Mario franchises being two examples of exclusive titles that blow me away with every installment. When either of those franchises come out, whatever game I was currently playing goes on the back burner.

It bugs me when people say the sony exclusives suck. I mean not all of them are great but they do have plenty of good ones but so does the 360 as a ps3 owner i really wanna play mass effect and i did think about buying it for the PC. Its just easier to for me to play it on the ps3 and i know it won't go there but sony exclusives don't suck i just got god of war collection and its sick i can't wait for god of war 3.

I loved my 360 and all of it's exclusives until I played MGS4, Killzone 2, LBP, and Uncharted 2... I've played so many games and those are four of the greatest games I have ever played. Halo & ME are pretty much the only MS exclusives I can think of that even come close to those games. Hell you can even throw an indie exclusive like Flower in and that is even better than anything I've played on XBLA. I used to write for 360 biased gaming blogs and since I bought my PS3 my 360 has been in a state of neglect. It's good to see the momentum the PS3 is finally getting and hopefully the hardware will indeed stay relevant as developers continue to push it's graphical limits. Naughty Dog even said that while they did max out the power of the PS3, they admitted with better coding they could do so much more. That's a promising statement. Good job sony, and thanks for keeping your focus on the hardcore gamers. Keep it coming.

This is the year PS3 will gain the lead in exclusivity quality it seems, but I wouldn't say that guarantees them the top spot for the rest of the gen. Also, I consider a 360 game that appears also only on PCs as close to exclusive as you can get. I don't know many people who use their PCs for gaming, especially not brand new games. I literally know ONE guy who religiously upgrades his PC to play the newest games and I haven't seen him in daylight since War of Warcraft came out...

The fact remains that the best games of this generation (Fallout 3, Assasins Creed 2, Bioshock...) are multiplatform anyway. The best console exclusive game I played this gen was probably Valkyria Chronicles (barely ahead of Mass Effect 1) which was amazing and original but no where near as massive as Fallout 3 or as poetic as Bioshock.

I get the feeling that developers and publishers put more resources into games (and dlc) when it’s planned to be multiplatform just for the fact that it doubles the market that will have access. Also, they’re probably under the impression that when something is tagged “exclusive,” every fanboy will buy it regardless of quality, so why invest as much. After playing the “exclusive” gta dlc, I can’t say I expect much out of Agent. You think that $50mil went into development of the dlc? No! That was bonus cash for high level executives.

What sony needs to do with the ps3 is not worry so much about the games they’re getting on there (they may as well at this point: ps3 owners are used to waiting for things like games and dlc) and more about the unlocked capabilities of the machine itself. There were all these functions they said would be built into the machine like 1080p native, snapshots & video, playlist integration, psp connectivity/remote play, and a bunch of other promises. Sure a few games use one or two of these functions at the discretion of the developer but the only function sony has made necessary are the stupid trophies. I can do just as much with trophies as I can with “potential”: Nothing!

I wasn’t expecting these functions to all be there when I bought the machine (after the first price drop) but at this point (now that they’ve released the slim update) they really need to make developers take advantage of the things the ps3 can do. Really they should’ve stepped up before the slim launched.

What I'm looking for the most, especially during these events such as Microsoft's X10 gathering, E3, GDC, and the Tokyo Game Show, are exclusives. I understand that exclusivity is practically non-existent these days, but still, the deciding factor is based on if a particular console has the IP that I want to play, and only for that console. What these companies are selling us is entertainment - essentially. If they don't have what I want then I go to someone who has.

And to be honest, the games that came out of the X10 event haven't resonated within me. Nothing seemed to be engrained into my head that made me want to throw down a pre-order. Now, the true show is at E3 - in my opinion. So who knows? Things could change.

Krodos,

I would say Madden last year would be a good indicator, as would the newest COD. These are based on NPD numbers, so we're comparing apples to apples here, and not apples to mangoes. Assassin's Creed is another one that sold significantly better on the 360 too. With COD and AC those were more recent releases where the gap on hardware sales had closed more.

With a PC and PS3, I get most of the exclusives. PS3's exclusives tend to be exclusive solely to the PS3 and 360's exclusives wind up on the PC sooner or later with a few exceptions (*cough* halo 3 and GoW2 *cough*).
