The Last Remnant represented a major experiment for Square Enix. Not only was it one of the company's first Xbox 360 games, it utilized the Unreal Engine, a first for the Japanese publisher. Unfortunately, the experiment wasn't quite successful, with critics calling it "a technical mess." Thankfully, the company isn't simply ignoring its mistakes, with Square Enix's new chief technology officer explaining how the misuse of the Unreal Engine led to such disappointing results. "One of the traps with middleware (like Unreal) is that some game teams believe that, because they got this middleware, maybe they need less programmers on their team, or maybe they don't need that many skilled programmers," Julien Merceron told Gamasutra.
By relying too much on middleware, teams face precarious situations when issues arise that can't be solved internally. "You don't have anyone that is able to solve the problem on your team," Merceron explained. In the case of The Last Remnant, the "problem" happened to be a wildly inconsistent framerate.
Merceron isn't advising against using middleware, noting "it won't be possible anymore to work without middleware because of time, talent, and cost reasons." Hopefully, under the new guidance of Merceron, Square Enix won't repeat the same mistakes it made with The Last Remnant.

Too Human wasn't as bad as Two Worlds. But if it's worse than Too Human that's saying it's pretty bad.

I'm just happy I waited and bought it on my PC. I'd still be waiting for it on PS3 if I hadn't. I've seen it on the 360 and was so surprised at how much work they must have done to fix the PC one.

I found that once i installed the game to my 360's HD, it improved alot. Still rough compared to most games, but alot better than without it.
All technically aspects aside, i really enjoyed the game.

Actually, I read somewhere that The Last Remnant was the very first game by Square Enix to use the Unreal Engine 3. *looks for source..*

Don't a lot of developers complain about the support from Epic in regards to the Unreal engine? Maybe that Crysis engine will be a breath of fresh air to licensees (assuming they do the same things because I don't know.)

It ran just fine on PC, though. I quite enjoyed that version, and I think anyone who has a rig capable of running it should give it a shot.

Yeah the pc version plays alot better than the 360 version.
I would recommend the pc version to anyone.
When i first got it for the 360, it crashed at the opening battle :S
Thankfully i got it not long after NXE came out and could install it to the hdd which fixed it.

I didn't get very far, but from the little bit I played, the story's pretty JRPG cliche. Also, the cutscene direction and voice-acting are abysmal. The town system's archaic, too. The only reason to be plying it is the battle system, which seemed like it would get pretty deep and involved later on; I just didn't have the patience to learn it.

The battle system gets very deep. About halfway through the game you've got dozens of people under your command, and the battles that ensue are amazing to watch. I like to set the critical hits on automatic and turn turbo off, then just sit back and watch.

Luckily though, the PC version didn't have this problem.

And yet, they don't want to released the fixed PC version on the PS3. Yoichi Wada needs to get fired.

I played both versions of the game and the PC version seemed to have had many of the technical issues fixed. Frame rate was smooth and I didn't encounter any major problems.

Not really. Most ports aren't optimized but PC hardware is so much stronger than the comparatively weaker PS3/Xbox 360 that it balanced out to the PC version being much much better. A fine example would be GTAIV. A moderate modern PC can run the game at resolutions of 1920x1080x60fps with 2xAA and a longer draw distance, better textures, etc.
Both the xbox 360 and PS3 struggle to maintain 30 fps with 0aa on the ps3 at a resolution of under 1280x720. Aka half the pixels.
Same applies for most PC ports now like Mass Effect 2 on a PC totally owns Mass Effect 2 on consoles. Saints Row 2 on PC was a bad port but still performs way better. Last Remenant performing better on the PC shouldn't really be a surprise. PC ports have been outperforming consoles since the 8800/38xx series came out from nvidia/ati.

We know PC versions of most games are better than console versions performance-wise. What I meant is they fixed the saving, combat, etc, problems.

How sad. I was looking forward to playing this too. Never heard of the problems until now. Always wondered why it was so cheap so soon.

Oh and if you say you hate the OST then something is wrong with you.

I agree this game is unplayable without it installed on your HD, and even so its pretty choppy sometimes - Battle prompts are useless, they pop up on attacking the enemy, which is normally the cause of lag, which means the prompt will flash for a second and fail.
The actual game is great, graphics are suberb - but cause lag. I wouldnt buy it again but i dont regret my purchase (if that makes any sense).

Thats odd you had that, yes the game had a low framerate at times but the low framerate meant you had MORE time to prepare the button input not less. it was just a bit more random with the timing because it was never the same each time, specially if you were fighting on of those damn giant dragons.
Going from playing the 360 to the PC version was a shock because it was so much quicker so i kept on missing the inputs :P

It can't ever be as bad as the universally agreed upon worst game of all time:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Rigs:_Over_the_Road_Racing
How do you beat a racing game with no colission and no sound and a victory trigger system that is so broken that you can literally win by backing up over the starting line and driving forward over it again?

Two Worlds is arguably the worst RPG I've ever played...I'd say go ahead and rent it for the goof. The horrible Wolfman Jack voice acting of "mayhaps this and that" is worth a couple of yucks. I'd never experienced multiple glitched achievements until this game. Got 2 for doing nothing, 1 never unlocked that should have and a couple that were absolutely impossible due to glitches. Trying to maneuver your mount was impossible (it'd veer off into random directions). There is a city at the top center of the map with nothing in it (game was unfinished). The "2" of the 2 worlds was even almost a misnomer as you spent all of 2 seconds in the 2nd world (and maybe that was only in a cut scene that was also glitched - can't remember)... Some of this was patched but I doubt all...I could go on and on and on...Truly a god-awful mess.
This game was touted as an Oblivion-killer and literally claimed to be "THE MOST EPIC RPG EVER MADE" in its advertising campaign.

Yeah this game was really bad.
I'm so glad they didn't bring it to the PS3 as it was garbage!!
Bad story bad voice over and bad gameplay!
It's just BAD!!
Unreal is a great engine like anything you just have to know how to use it and figure out is it the best engine to use for the type of game you are making!

It should ... you always say it has so much power under the hood. If it didn't then there would really be issues.
