Not bad looking at all.

I still think it should look better considering the development time.

@ the burning sensation: I'm looking forward to this game and don't have to troll. I will make a note to myself not to state my opinion on a gaming blog in the future because people tend to misinterpret opinions for trolling.

Thankfully regardless of what you think I will be able to play this game when it comes out.

Bull, buddy -- BULLSPIT!

Alan Wake is easily one of, if not the best, looking that consoles have to offer. Absolutely stunning. And X10 hands-on buzz has said it has the polish, graphics, and gameplay of a AAA product.

@Cheesepirate: Lol, you think that this is one of the best games in terms of graphics? It's lightening effects are probably ranked up there with the greatest, but it terms of overall graphics; no. Alan Wake will be a game that anyone can play relatively well with a moderately high end PC.

I have to agree, it's looking damned good! I couldn't help but notice the lack of screen peripherals/game aids (i.e. area maps, enemy indicators, objective markers, health gauges, etc.). If this is actual gameplay and not just cut scenes (I'm pretty sure the flashlight fight scene was game play), I think it's a smart move on Remedy's part. I think the lack of screen peripherals would make it feel more like you were actually fighting your way through this darkened world, and add to the overall spookiness of the game.

l can't wait for Alan Wake to drop...although, my wallet isn't as enthused! :D

You can tell how long the game has been in development by just looking at Alan's clothes. Sport coat with the hoodie underneath? That is SO 90's!

That's silly, I understand not being able to afford every new game but that statement was made out of spite. Anyone really interested would rent the damn thing. Yum yum Gamefly. This is certainly one of the few singleplayer only games that is a buy.

It's not about the money. I just dropped $350'ish on new game pre-orders for the first half of the year with the Gamestop 36% off "promotion".

This just doesn't scream buy for me, unless it's 20'ish.

Maybe I'll rent it, if I have time!

This

Pretty much sums up what every Joystiq gamer is thinking. I honestly don't know how it got a T rating. Games with killing get the T rating all the time but I figured the dark subject matter of this rather spooky game would have got the M rating. I really have never understood the ESRB or the MPAA in this regard. The MRS however is pretty simple haha, if it has vulgarity it's lissted Parental Advisory.

It doesn't literally mean it's for teenagers, just that it has mild enough content that it would be suitable for teens.

Just like with Flower, it's rated E but I doubt any 13 year old would play it for the fear of being "gay".

@Traceur_Ryuk

I think we're aware the rating does not mean who it's targeted towards. No one on Joystiq probably thinks that way but the average frat gamer however does. I've heard plenty of dumbasses while playing M rated games on Xbox Live stating they wouldn't buy a certain game because it got a T rating so it must be fore kids or something silly like that. It's bad for marketing even though it's good because it broadens their target audience at the same time.

This whole game screams classic Steven King novel. Which is great for me. I'm more excited to get my hands on this than Heavy Rain. Obviously that comment is going to get me ranked into oblivion especially with this next one *deep breath*. This is partially do to the fact that it's a story driven game I can actually PLAY. Sorry guys sorry. Heavy Rain looks great and I enjoyed the demo (on my Gamefly que) but Alan Wake is where it's at. I'm just happy both consoles are getting epic cinematic experiences, though Heavy Rain is obviously better looking haha.

I think Heavy Rain is trying to achieve something completely different. After all Heavy Rain is taking chances when it tries to create multiple endings without using the morality mechanics used in games like Fable, inFAMOUS, and so on. It's hard to take game play serious when a NPC is talking and someone is just wondering around in circles waiting for the character to shut up so they shoot something again. With Heavy Rain, it give players a chance to make the choices they wish some characters in Hollywood movies would make, they the player might or might not disagree with. With all that said, I think both games are trying to achieve great story telling in their own way. Alan Wake seems to be on that path.

Although I agree with your comment for the most part, I take issue with your comment about PLAY[ing] a game like Heavy Rain and Alan Wake. Because what is a game like Alan Wake but a series of button presses? Heavy Rain has just streamlined to contextual process and solving a way to replicate complex commands that can not be handled by current controller inputs.

Also, if lack of control over specific actions were such a bad thing Final Fantasy or any JRPG wouldn't sell. It's all in about how your approach a game with a certain mindset. If you come to FF to use that GIANT sword to do Kratos style ass kicking then you're going to seriously disappointed.

I was just boiling it down to a simple statement for the sake of sparking conversation hah, I realize it's quite a bit more complex and does question the definition of interactive entertainment (i.e. video games) as a whole.

@ Burning...

Don't get me wrong, I think Heavy Rain is going to be a very intriguing game.

But Quick Time Events do not translate into me "Playing" a game.

I normally HATE QTEs (God of War, I'm looking at you) and the fact that this equals almost EVERY aspect of the game does make me frustrated. I didn't like Dragon's Lair, so why am I being subjected to it again? They are doing it well enough that I want to experience the game, but that's what I'm doing, experiencing it and pressing buttons that add to the action. I don't feel like I'm really PLAYING a game.

That said, I love Steven King and this looks like it could be very, very interesting. I have credit at Gamestop that will almost certainly find its way to this.

Nick (xbl: andsoitgoes42)

Very personal opinion there NIck, just depends on what you like, Alan Wake looks great, but they are very different gameplay styles, you may call Heavy Rain just a simple WTE game, but to those who are interested in it, it's more then that, you are making a choice, you are forming a specific story in the way you want it to end, a contrast to running in a path set up for you, shooting at the enemies placed for you and no matter how many times you play, it will always be the same. Thats the joy of choice, theres a game to suit everyone, as for me, I'll be buying both before I make any on-the-spot claims.

The idea that I'm making a choice in Heavy Rain was quickly forgotten when I played through the demo a second time. This time during the fight scene I just put the controller down. You know what happened? My guy got beaten up a bit, but it ended the same way. Choice? My actions had no weight in the story. Surely, sometimes it will, but I won't be able to play Heavy Rain now without thinking "Do I really need to be trying right now?"

If you remember the opening scene from Max Payne I can't imagine Alan Wake not getting an M rating for just the story. It may not have violent images, crude language or substance abuse but it sure seems like a mature story. Certainly one I wouldn't want my kids playing...... oh wait lol. I don't really care what they rate it because I actually parent my kids. Rating systems are just silly. But back on track! Damn that opening scene with the lunatics killing his family was intense. I immediately put the game down and had a drink, and then came back to play after a few minutes of course lawl.
